For sale is a brand new Dave Patrick Ultimate 40 Electric Biplane. This was my 3rd DP Ultimate 40 (First two had YS .63 glow engines), and I decided to convert it to electric to see how it would perform. Well, the experiment was a success and it flies GREAT! I’ve only made 3 flights on the plane and it flies just as good as its glow counterpart and the included batteries allow for a 10 minute flight with all electronic components staying nice and cool. Unfortunately, I’m forced to sell this one to help fund another project, but someone is going to get a great little Ultimate!
If you’re not familiar with the DP Ultimate 40, it is 46” long, with a span of 44”. ALL tail surfaces are pull-pull for super precise control (especially with the included digital servos). It has dual aileron servos on the bottom wing with interconnect struts to actuate the ailerons on the top wing. The wheel pants and cowl are fiberglass and the airframe is built up and covered in Ultracote. The plane is small enough to fit in our little Honda CRV SUV without taking the wings off.
This setup provides 605W to the APC 15x8E prop on 6S. The plane weighs just over 6 lbs, so performance is spectacular! I’ve designed the battery trays to allow for movement fore and aft to fine tune the CG to your liking. There is no additional ballast needed and everything is setup to fly great right out of the box. I’m using a small Nicad battery to power the receiver and servos, but you could easily convert over to a BEC if you prefer, although I found the weight savings to be negligible. Cooling air flows into the cowl and through the fuselage, exiting through a hole in the bottom of the rear fuse. This hole also allows easy installation and removal of the two lipoly packs as well as easy connection of the batteries and is also home to the servo/receiver switch/charge jack. This is a great setup and I used Dave Patrick’s E-Conversion instructions for the 1.20-size Ultimate as my guide in setting this plane up. The setup works great and provides plenty of cooling air for the motor, batteries, and ESC.
As I said above, this is my 3rd DP Ultimate 40, so I’ve learned what needs to be done to set up the plane properly. I’ve modified all of the wing connections to use 4-40 socket head bolts, with nylon lock nuts on the main cabane struts. The elevator and rudder servo are mounted on the centerline rather than offset next to each also. I’m including everything EXCEPT for the receiver, so you will be able to get in the air immediately with little or no setup time other than basic radio setup.
Here is an itemized list of all of the components included in this plane along with the prices I paid for them. I purchased everything BRAND NEW for this plane about 2 months ago, and there is no used or second-hand equipment anywhere. I’ve only made one 5 minute test flight and two 10 minute flights, so everything is basically brand new with no damage or problems. Here’s what all is included:
