Now I'm totally confused... Just read a thread on RCU where the theme was how much safer the LiIon batteries were then the LiPos. I have also read articles that end with the opposite opinion... Which is true?

Lithium-Ion are in a cylindrical metal can while Lithium Polymer are in a mylar heat sealed envelope. Which do you think can develop the most pressure and become an explosive device?

There is way too much in the way of misinformation going around on this subject.

Metal-case LiIon technology is all but useless in R/C flight. Nearly all the development has been in LiPoly technology, and LiIon lags far behind LiPoly in discharge capability and capacity. Any argument of LiPoly vs. LiIon is a waste of breath, because LiIon is not practical for R/C flight, safety issues aside.
