Here's a gold mine of tips and techniques for adding the all-important "In Combat Service" details to any Warbird;
http://www.aircraftresourcecenter.com/
This is a site for plastic scale models but virtually all the techniques I found can be used on flying models.
From the home page click on "Tools 'N' Tips". It's easy to get stalled there, 60 sub-categories ranging from Air Tanks, Airbrushing to Vacuforming.. but scroll to the next-to-last one, Weathering and Washes.
Only 10 choices here! Exhaust Stains, Reverse Washing, (2) Weathering, Bare Metal, Darkening Panel Lines, Dirty Planes, Chalk Washes, Oil Wash, Adding Paint Chipping.
Many photos, the "tools" are along the lines of $0.44 Walmart Craft Paints, $2.00 silver Art Store pencils, inexpensive chalks, make-up brushes and a lot more.
What this made me realize is that when I finish painting a Warbird, I'm just starting on the "realism" part!
Have Fun!
