well, this is a bit of a pet topic for me as my philosophy revolves around affordability, availability, transporatation (convenience) and interchangeability blah blah....
but, ive been around long enough to see the popularity of what id consider expensive alternatives to icdf. Considering that EDF came about as an alternative to the ever unreliable (but very powerful) ICDF, i wouldve thought that people would be treating it much the same, in terms of $ spent on their DF models.
What has happened is a bit of a mystery to me. It seems that people are spending much more than before on EDF, and still not getting the ICDF performance.
The popularity and convenience of the small fans is undebatable, but there seems to be a large number of large (for me that's bigger than the equivalent ICDF budget) 480 size + EDFs.
i know in my part of the world these represent big $ and arent that popular, but do attract the crowds. Many are bordering on the turbine price tags also.
So, id like to do a poll to see what the populous is doing, or prefer.
please let me know by voting and/or comment.
interested to hear the responses.

I have three minifans ( 69mm ), two MTronics SF Turbofans ( 62mm ) , three microfans ( 50mm ), seven EDF-50’s ( 50mm ), two little KP-44’s ( 44mm ) and five tiny EDF-40’s ( 40mm )
How cheap does that make ME ? ;)

I'm into 90mm and under but we don't have that option!
Many MiniFan set ups,
Many Kyosho fan set ups with Kamdax Impellers.
Newest is a 45" Bob - E - Cat with a MidiFan - Mega 22/30/3 - will run 9s and should be around 1450 watts.

Well, Here Goes My First Post On Wattflyer.
Check This Out-- Ziroli F9-f Panther (all Balsa / Ply Kit)
I Think I Can Bring The Airframe In Around 6-6 1/2 Lbs. With Light Weight Retracts And A Monokote Finish.
This Is A Large Airplane, 72'' Ws, 72" Length, 1050 Sq. Inches.
Question Is, What Fan/motor Combination ? I Figure That It Has To Be A 4 1/2 To 5" Fan Unit. I've Looked At The Wemotec And Aeronaut Fans And They Seem To Be Workable.
Also: Can A Guy Use A Glow Fan With An Electric Motor ?
I Think This Could Be An Exciting And Successful Project But I Need Some Guidance On The Technical Aspects.
Oh, And What Is The Conversion For Newtons To Pounds Of Thrust ?
Looking Forward To Talking With You Guys And Any Help You Can Provide Would Be Appreciated.

I've Been Talking With Larry From Jet Hangar Hobbies And It Sound Like Glow Fans Are Not Suitable For Electric Use Due To The Pitch Angle Of The Impeller Blades.
What Can Anybody Tell Me About Their Experience With The Larger Wemotec And Aeronaut Fans ?
Motor Choices, Batt's, Rpm's And Thrust, Ect.

Yes Bob, Padiham is in the UK...
I'm new here ( but not at RC Groups or electriflyuk.com... ) and need to alter my settings - and add an avater... :o
I had a Midifan 3 years ago... great on 10 cells with a Hacker B50-18S.
Sadly - I sold it; it would be GREAT on the 3S4P lipos I have now... ;)
It'd also work with 4S !

What Level Of Thrust Were You Getting With That Set-up On The Midi-fan Keven ?
keven64

I had 34oz of static thrust for a 60oz model with the Hacker-powered midifan for only around 295W using 10-cell RC2400 SubC packs.
3 years is a long time... and battery technology has improved hugely. ;)

Stu Maxwell uses 9S Li Polys (three packs of 3S in series) on a Wemotec minifan and Hacker B50-19L in his F-104 Starfighter, and it out performs the Turbine models at Pitttown. I hope he will be flying it at Blacktown on Sun Nov 20th. Worth seeing.

Oldpilot, where about is the Blacktown club? I will be down in Parramatta on Saturday night the 19th for a christmas party :D and would love to check it out if time allowed. Time of day of course would depend on the previous nights consumption.....;) I am yet to see EDF planes fly in person  :o

PAUL. I'd love to see you at Blacktown. I shall be taking my Ripmax Spitfire MK 1X. To get there turn right into Doonside Road off the Great Western Hwy, turn into the entrance opposite the lights at Douglas Rd and follow the track around to the field. Plenty of parking and it runs all day so you can lie in a bit if it was a good party. ;)

Thanks For The Info Oldpilot.
I'd Be Very Interested To Know The Spec's On The Starfighter, As It Seems That I'm Hearing More And More About The Wemotec Mini-fan Moving Some Pretty Large Aircraft.
Are There Any Threads Out There That Followed The Construction Of The Starfighter Project?
Thanks Again Gentlemen

For me you can never have to much power.
Apart from the alfa 60’s I cant really be bothered with smaller edf’s unless it’s a twin wemo 50 or something.
69 mm edf's on 700 + watts are good for fast , FUN flying :)
90 mm EDF's on 1500 + watts are what i reserve for paved runways and are expensive yes $3000 + but they super fun to fly and really do MOVE. :D
As for the 120mm EDF's i haven’t got one YET, but im thinking of converting my old IC spectra to a 120 Shubi 17 lb of thrust at about 4000 watts. might wait a year though as its about $2500 for the power system at the moment and i could get a turbine for less.
But I will get one , it’s a must have as it’s the only EDF size I haven’t explored yet. :p

Thanks for the directions Patrick. Open bar all night, a hotel booking next door, what can I say
I only hope stumax is there, I have seen videos of his incredible aircraft, I am stinging to see his, and other EDF's do their thing in person. I saw a photo of your spitfire a while back, you build the nicest models patrick, oh, and model them with the nicest models too ;) :D

WOW, is that really what they cost to have this much power in EDF? Is the big money in the batteries?

WOW, is that really what they cost to have this much power in EDF? Is the big money in the batteries?
Well it all depends on what jet you buy and how much power you want.
you could get a 90mm edf jet in the air with poor performance for about $1000 min and that would be very :o
Don’t be discouraged though i tend expect a lot performance wise and do spend a lot of $ on EDF's as im always wanting more power:D its a very expensive habit to have.
For a 1500 watt set-up li-pos will cost you around $500 to $900 all depends on how many mlh you want and what quality of li-pos you want.
you can get a 9s 3700 Flight power 20 -30 C li-po for about $500 AUS and that is very ! good value. for 1500 - 1800 watts applications. :)
I will try the 9s 3700 20-30C Flight power li-pos in my Bob E Kat soon.
p.s led's are grate or dusk flying !

Thanks Again Paddy. The F-104 And Panther Are Gorgeous!!
You Guys Are Making Me Nervous When Start Talking About The Prices Of Your Edf Set-ups. I Realize That You Get What You Pay For In Terms Of Quality And Performance, But I'm Really Starting To Wonder If My 72" Ziroli Panther Project Is Impractical.
I Guess I'm Still Willing To Give It A Try, As I'm Always Up For A Challenge. I'll Probably Go With The Wemotec 730 Or 750 Fan Unit As These Seem Reasonably Priced. Motor ? Not Sure Yet.
Seems To Me That I Can Build The Airframe First And Then Choose The Motor / Battery Package Based On The "dry Weight"
I'll Post Occasional Details Of The Project If Any One Is Interested. Always More Than Happy To Receive Suggestions And Feedback !
Thanks Guys

Bill Hamilton has the 730 fan in his f16 and runs 8s3p 2500 batteries and plettenberg motors in it.
youll need a whole lotta $ to get a 72'' EDF in the air...

As I Have said earlier in this thread.
I have an SM95 127mm dia DF which I bought from Oliver Wennmacher a long time ago. I have an Ultra 3300/6 to power it but am afraid to run it up to full RPM as I am not confident of the balance of the solid moulded plastic impellor. Also the early kit I got had all the instructions in German and did not have the pattern for setting the stators, as in the later kits. I have no idea whether my stators are set to the optimum angle. I just set them BGABG, and hoped for the best. They are located by screws and once set are locked in position with epoxy. So far I have only used the screws until I am certain of the position, which I am Not. I have tried to find the WemoTec 750 C/F replacement rotor but am having no luck. Can anyone HELP.
Cheers. Patrick.
