View Full Version : Help choosing new park flyer

Hi all,
I need some advice/suggestion. I am looking for a new park flyer. I just finished with a "Frog" from foamfly.com (So to speak) since I can't really repair it any more times or it'll be more epoxy and glue than foam!:D So I still have all of the electronics etc and I'm ready for a different foamy. Here's what I have:
GWS IPS-A Motor (5.86:1 Gear Ratio)
E-Tec 1200mAh 2-Cell Lithium Polymer Pack
9x7 SlowFlyer Propeller (EP9070)
4-Channel 72MHz Pico Receiver (JR)
and all the servosand ESC etc. to go with all of this.
I'm pretty new to electrics so I don't know a lot about the motors and batteries:rolleyes:
Any suggestions about what would be a fun plane to put this setup in without too many alterations??
Thanks!!

:) Your equipment will fit nicely into a GWS Tiger Moth or J3 Cub F. ( I am assuming your servos are GWS Pico or Naro). Both are foam planes. Construction is easy and there is a lot of building help and advice available on this forum and on RC Groups.
Both planes are slow flyers. They are very gentle and forgiving and are a lot of fun. Neither plane will take much more than a 5 mph wind, but it is worth the wait for a calm day. Neither plane is very aerobatic wihout significant modifications, but both are a lot of fun flown in a stock and scale manner. Both are easy to repair. As a bonus, www.allerc (http://www.allerc) has the Cub slope glider on sale for about $16!!! The slope glider is the unpainted version, so you can paint it any color you like. You must use water based acrylic paints. I use the paint from the Walmart craft dept. I have found it for as little as $.44 per bottle.
If you want a balsa plane and would like to do a little building, go to www.mountainmodels.com (http://www.mountainmodels.com) and look at the Duskstick. This is an excellent flying plane and is easy and fun to build. Their customer service is next to none. And like the Tiger Moth and J3, the Duskstick has a very large and loyal following.
There are many other fine planes that would suit your needs, and I am sure you will receive other suggestions. I mentioned only the planes with which I have first hand experience. Good luck with whatever you choose. Let us know what you decide to get..

I second the Pico Moth or the J-3 Cub. The stuff AEAJR is suggesting is good stuff but it won't match your equipment

You would love a Pico Tiger Moth, it will fly good in a slight breeze and do minor stunts. Slopeglider kit is very reasonable. But look into heavyduty strut kit for it and for really good flying get a Feigo Brushless eng. and esc.

The Moutain Models planes can use the equipment he has, except the motor. A new motor/gearbox/prop would be about $19 which you can get from Mountain models.
If the Lithium pack is at least 6 C rated, that should work too.

I'm partial to the Mountain Models Magpie. I'm building one right now and will be flying it this weekend, weather permitting. As it comes together I am seeing how it will be a tough plane. I can't wait to build the sport aileron wing for it. My previous experience has been with a T-hawk.

;) Good decision. I have a Magpie and love it! The only reason I did not suggest it was you said you wanted to use the gear you already have. The IPS motor you have would not work with the Magpie. You will not regret the decision to get this plane. It is my personal favorite.

Ictbu,
I'd like to recommend the GymSwallow as a cheap, durable, slowflyer that will provide many hours of relaxing flying, even in close quarters.
http://www.tdmsoftware.com/majewski...ff/swallow.html (http://www.tdmsoftware.com/majewski...ff/swallow.html)
I have been flying mine (scratch-built from the free plans above) since May 04. It has crashed many times, and seldom sustains any damage. After I covered the bottom surface of the wing, it will float in, power off, at about a 10 degree angle. The AUW for mine is about 8 oz, but it is happy up to 10 oz or more, depending on the battery used. You have all the necessary electronic components already. Materials from your LHS will cost perhaps $10 to $15 (for enough to make two or three planes). Visit an outdoor store that has an archery range, and ask for a damaged carbon fiber arrow shaft. They ususally just throw them away, and are glad to give them to someone for the asking. For covering, I used Reynolds Color Plastic Wrap held on with Duck brand blue Glue Stick. It is light, easy to apply, surprisingly durable, easy to patch, and, best of all, it is cheap. I am still flying the original covering on my GymSwallow (albeit with a few patches), and I probably have somewhere around 100 hours on it, all of it outdoors. It is my favorite plane. I also fly a Slow Stick and a Pico Stick F. BTW, it is very similar to the DuskStick.
Should you decide to build a GymSwallow, there are a few mods that I could recommend, if you would like.

All that sounds like it would go fine on the GWS SS Slope Glider, about $19 anywhere.

If you want a RTF slow flyer, the Slo-V would be a good choice.
Slow-V from Parkzone - $140 - Best flown in still to under 5 mph breeze. This is the best choice for people who only have a small space to fly or who have an indoor place to fly, such
as a gym or similar space.

ictbu,
Consider building a GymSwallow, designed by Terry Majewski. Plans are downloadable for free. It has been my favorite plane since May of 2004. It is the slowest plane I have, and also the one with the flattest glide angle. It is built from balsa, with a carbon fiber arrow shaft for a fuselage. I covered mine with Reynolds colored Plastic Wrap using Duck brand Glue Stick. Weight without battery is around 6-7 ounces, but it can be built a little lighter, and I've flown it with 4.5 oz batteries. More weight equals faster speeds. I usually use a 2 oz LiPoly battery. Try it, you'll like it.

What's wrong with a GWS E-Starter.....I learned to fly ailerons on one and think it is a lot more friendly that the Tiger Moth. It can handle a little wind, is cheap, and easy to assemble......Pat

Without knowing anything about RC flight at all I had massive first time success with the AeroBird Extreme. Yes it needs a bit of open space, and is a bit, well, BIG, but if you get over that, it flies smooth and true and is easy to handle. Take it from a total nOOb!!! :D I can hop in my car with my ABX and a couple charged batteries, drive over to a nearby vacant lot, be flying in a couple minutes and can fly for an hour. Too easy, too cool and too fun!

Markind,
Try getting it high and shutting the motor off. Glide around as slowly as you can. You may suddenly realize the plane is not coming down. In fact it might be going up.
You just caught your first thermal. Xtreme can do that!
