Hello Jimbo, Welcome to Wattflyer! Here's a collection of schematics for home-made ESC's; http://www.math.niu.edu/~behr/RC/speed-ctl.html

Stefan's ESC http://www.stefanv.com/rcstuff/esc.htm (referenced on the math.niu.edu page but with a bad link) is a pretty good one to start with.....it doesn't need you to program any microcontrollers like most of them do.

Hi Jim, There are uses for a prop brake (or "Hard" stop setting on an ESC), especially on powered gliders. The hard brake will allow the folding prop to function properly. Also, a "free-wheeling" prop has much more drag than a "stopped" one, so if you plan to spend any time gliding a conventional model a brake will help the glide ratio.
I've also heard of flyers say that for a model with no landing gear, a brake allows them to stop the prop blades in the horizontal position, to avoid prop breaks. I'm usually too busy trying to land to bother with the prop position, but, hey, that's just me!
