Ah, Gday mates,
Hello Tim, wheres ya bin?and your right we'll have to drive this from this side of the globe to get it rolling but its a great thing wattflyer has given us. As for son of Paleface, when you coming past for a coffee? the shop aint the same with out you keeping the seats warm.
Now, I'm a current member of the Strathalbyn club but also do a fair amount of park flying with all kinds of stuff from small electric parkflyers to silly over powered gliders and a fair amount of heli flying too, I also as a hobby retailer run once a month indoor flying in my hometown and then have a commitment to help out at another about a half hour from home so its a busy life but somebody has to do it.;)
Currently I'm building a Jr voyager e heli to put in to an awesomley airbrushed scale bell 222(I wish i could say I painted it but sad to say I did pay to get it done) and when I can find my camera cord I'll post a picture or two, I'm also flying pattern in sportsman after a 23 year break from competitive stuff and loving the challenge just wish I could get out and practice to really make the most of it.
I look forward to hearing what is other peoples interests around the great southern land and hope this forum flourishes.

G,day from Ravensthorpe,WA. (600km East of Perth, 200km from the nearest club.)
I fly two aircraft presently. One is a bone stock powered Ego Cessna 182 which I use to keep my skills up to fly my YS 140 3HP powered CMPro FW190. I fly both at their (radically different) limits.
FYI, the Cessna with its lack of power and its poor surface centralising is harder to fly than the FW 190, but for $200 with radio its a good deal compared to the $2000 FW which also requires a huge landing area.
May this forum grow!

Ray,
She enjoyed the flight she had the other week - but today the weather was a little more gusty (ie, gusts up to 3~5km/hr :D ). Also, the ESC/motor was playing up and despite the ESC showing "power to the motor" the motor simply refused to kick over until I wiggled everything and it was running again - most confusing and she started getting that "I'm bored look".
To make things even more thrilling, the motor decided to eject itself at one point in the flight... at least I didn't have to twist those wires up again :| Fortunately the rubber bands holding the 2S2200 lipo also were holding the motor wires so the motor didn't move too far and hence the CG was still "flyable".
Tonight I replaced the wires and the connectors (Deans Ultra) for the ESC and motor, let's hope that it flies okay tommorow :) (I think it's a bit too soon to have her flying the Seether )

G'day Tim,
A Blade CX2 is a small twin rotor coaxial RTF heli.
http://www.modelflight.com.au/eflite/eflite_blade_cx_2_helicopter.htm
It comes with a 2.4GHz spread spectrum radio (Spektrum brand) and is an excellent first heli. It is best suited to indoors but can be flown in dead calm outdoors. Range is intentionally limited to under 100m which is not a real limitation since you couldn't possibly see it well enough to fly it more than 30m away anyway.

Hi west oz,
I cant remember if the ego 182 can cope with extra cells but I would think so, what I can tell is that with a cheapy 400 size brushless and lipo I had a ball flying one a while back fitted with a set of GWS floats, with the motor I used it could r.o.g from wet grass with out a problem and even with the extra drag and weight of the flaots it was very capable of nice inverted flight and other great non scale aerobatics. I'm told the radio in them is now quite good unfortunately the first batch we sold through the shop suffered from inferior radio and tarnished my view a little, I met with the ego guys at toy fair and found them to be a good bunch of straight guys and believe they have done everything in their power to sort out their early radio issues.
the ego cessna is agreat flying model thats for sure,

Alexis, can you enlighten me as to the radio problems with the 182? I quite often get glitches when I am flying and suspect the conection for the battery is el cheepo. Have bought some deans plugs but am saving them for the moment.
I really like the look of the Electric Shock reviewed in the latest Airbourne mag. I used to fly a Sig fazer .40 for many years and the Electric shock looks like a nice step up. Can anyone recommend the Electric Shock? I got caught out once believing a mag review about a fun fly profile plane. It turned out to be a heavy shoddy dog of a thing, so now I only go on word of mouth from fellow flyers as to quality of stuff on the market.

Just call me Boz if its easier. I see someoine else answered what a BladeCX2 is. Yes Im self taught and love flying it. Im 43yrs old and when I was in my teens I got the building bug and built a gas rc trainer. I never flew it but enjoyed building it (I gave it away).
Now i have a young son that is interested in planes so I have been exposed to the new electric technology (unbelievable what can be done now)
I am looking at buying a ego Cessna 182. Are they any good as I have read some bad posts in the forums like bad glitches and esc etc.
I was looking at a Hobbyzone Super Cub but there electronics sound crap. Would really like some help in deciding on a good first decent plane.

Alexis,
Hopefully the design was sufficiently appealing to your desires :)
A lot of the time my designs are very much a TLAR inspiration and I chip away at it from there. Most revisions on the designs have more to do with making the build process simpler or more accurate (laser cutting opens up many avenues).

Hi Boz
Coincidently I am a '63 model as well!!!!!
I like my 182, mostly for its scale looks. It flies reasonably well. It tends to be a little difficult in four channel mode as it does not level out laterally very well due to the ailerons not self centering properly. It uses wires in tubes to activate the ailerons via a single servo and the ailerons tend to require constant correction to maintain level lateral control.
The power is just sufficient providing the batteries are in tip top condition. Rolls, loops from a shallow dive and inverted flight is possible. With care, it can be thrown around pretty well.
I considered using the spare three channel wing to make a motor glider version by stretching the wing by about 300mm after catching a few thermals with the standard wing!
The only mods I have made so far is to sand off all the mold dimples from the foam fuse and wings, adding tape covers to all the hinge gaps and taping over a molded in channel that runs from tip to tip on top of the wing.
I also fitted a pop stick under the rear of the wing to correct a climbing problem under power. Inverted flight was improved by this mod also.
Value for money it is a good deal, especially if the afore mentioned radio problems are resolved now.
I went for the 4 channel version and got an extra batt pack to get a couple of flights in each time.
I am not sure if I would recommend it as a plane for a beginner. Providing you have a very big field, pull it up gently but get plenty of altitude and you may be OK. Obviously, instruction and buddy flying with an experienced flyer is the ideal scenario.
Perhaps the three channel version would be lighter and less complicated to fly?
Tim.

Evening Boz,
Just to throw my two bobs worth in here, since you have a blade, have a look at the quality of it, that will give you an idea of what to expect with a super cub, all comes from the Horizon Hobby group. I can't say I like the radio that comes with the cub, but not for any quality reasons, only because the set up is really dedigned to stay in the cub and not be transported off to the next project once its finished with, what I will say is that because of the conection to horizon I mentioned earlier I don't think you can fault the flying of a super cub it is brilliant and looks fantastic in the air and uses very lettle power to maintain flight something I cant say about a lot of trainer packages, I have flown many of them and find that they are very able to maintain height and perform nicely at just under half throttle leaving plenty of reserve and keeping good duration. A word of advice about the so called anticrash technology, it does work but only if the aircraft has enough height to recover, in other words don't turn it on at launch and expect it to teach you to fly, instead launch it and keep your elevator hand in your pocket and let the power and the wing gain you some altitude then you can turn on the anticrash if you start to have trouble gaining control of your new addiction, I have seen what happens when people turn it on and launch and the result looks terrible because part of the inbuilt recovery system is that the power is cut until level flight is returned, so if you launch poorly and the the motor cuts to help recover the bad attitude the aircraft has been put into by that poor launch you have very short unsatisfying flights, and it is in my opinion a nice flying model.
I hope this helps you with your decisions, I will let somebody with newer than 12 month old experience of the cessna tell you if their radio is any good because my experience of the early stuff was that it had virtually no range and glithcing was constant not just a rare occurance, as I said earlier though I don't want to bag a product that may well be now sorted, that would be unfair to the people who have done hard work to fix up the problem.
regards
Alexis,

Hi,
Great idea for Australia to have its own thread, hopefully when 'WE' ask a question we can get local general info. (ie products we've HEARD of!!)
I'm at Prospect (near Parramatta) and fly at a local park (Penrith) on Sundays.
The cars have their track and we have our strip, when cricket is'nt being played.
Here's what I fly when I go out there...
http://www.sportssyndications.com/pitts/pitts.htm
And fly my heli's sometimes, but I mainly keep then to the backyard.
Got a Walkere #22 & #36 they are fun, but I can't cut loose yet, like I can with planes.
Contact me pvt mail if you want to know exactly where we fly and see if we'll be that day (Sundays only - normally 4pm till dark)
We've never had trouble with council as there are only a few of us (up a 12 max show up, but that might change) and the electrics are so quiet, people hardly take a second glance.
Problem is the only two flying fields in zillion miles (Luddondairy and Vineard) membership is full. (and expensive)
And it's all just political for me.
Regards Bill.

Hi Alexis
Can you recall what size lipo was used in the Cessna and if it fitted into the 182 without mods to the battery cage? Was the original RX and esc used?
I flew the 182 again this morning and it really does need more power. Even allowing for the fact that I also fly a plane with close to 3HP it really is not comfortable.

Thanks West-Oz and Mighty Wings Australia for your replys. I emailed ego and they inform me that they have fixed all the problems with the radio (now 36mh) and new esc 30A automatic.
Also I was driving to work this morning and saw a Hobbyzone Super Cub flying in the parklands. I stopped and chatted to the owner. You are right it looks fantastic in the air.
The owner was a complete newbie and has smashed it up fairly well but it still flies great. He said it is pretty easy to fly.
What to do - I just read on another forum that the Multiplex Eazystar is a really good unit to buy. Will have to see

I'm flying the acromastr at the moment and cant get enough of it, I've a lot of them and the customers that have them are saying whens the next batch coming as they want to buy a back up one to keep at home incase the worst happens and they smash up the one they have. i know I'll be keeping a spare stashed somewhere for when mine eventually dies its awesome.

Hi All
Just a quick update. I modified my Ego 182 to run on a 11.4 3s lipo and am now a real happy camper. It will climb at least 45 degrees out of sight, runs for ages and is a ball in close and fast. It easily handles inverted loops etc :silly: I have had to replace the original motor (brushed 400) once. I considered buying a brushless motor but I will see how the replacement 400 goes as I am finding that I am using the throttle now and can save full throttle for brief bursts.
FYI the plane starts to glitch when the motors start to wear out giving you fair warning.

Not much activity in here guys, a few days with no posts! The only way to get a new forum up and active is to post things up and start discussing R/C! :)
Cmon ppl!!

Hi extreme rc
My Ego Sim never worked. From memory it loaded ok but the cable interface to the remote did not work (no light showing) I did not bother with it.

Looking forward to this weather improving! Its been blowing solid here for a couple weeks now.

here too! and rain every day (which is a good thing).
Did you contact EGO? I used their SIM at the last trade show and it worked very well. Was a USB cable from memory. I do know some ppl have had problems setting up the calibrations etc in FMS, I use the GWS cables for JR radios, they are serial connection and always worked on every PC.

Couldn't be bovered. Postage on any warranty problem out here usually costs more than the item concerned. I use the 182 as a real life "flight sim" for my other aircraft anyway.
Any advice on a brushless motor to replace the the motor in the Cessna when it finally dies? I am running a 11.1V 1300mah 3S Lipo through the standard ESC at present.

Hello Alexis, just wanted to reply to your post regarding the "Goodyear" Racing models. I started a post on "High Performance Electrics" a while back; http://www.wattflyer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16252 to see if there was any interest in just such an event.
Well, it got quite a few "reads" and several replies but I haven't seen many models (photos) posted yet. Franny built a Goldberg "Shoestring" electric conversion (post # 13) and Airhead has good photos of the full-size racing on post # 9.
I did some research for plans/3-views and found several, in various sizes. I love the look of these aircraft and they seem perfect for a model racing event. As you suggested, some sort of power restriction would help keep things reasonably even.
Let me know if you get any interest and I'll do the same! I'm looking towards a Rivets, Ol' Tiger or LiL' Toni in the "speed 400" size range as a scratch build. We're a bit far apart for a race but maybe someday?
Best Wishes,
Ron

The cessna you have has the direct drive 400 in it? Without wanting to sound too commercial I have a perfect sized outrunner in my EMAX range that will suit and should also drop into the mount ok too. An APC9045E prop runs at 9 amps for around 600 grams thrust so your battery pack will have an easy time. You can prop up to 1050E for 800 grams thrust at 12 amps.
You can run an 18A brushless ESC or similar without a problem and the flight characteristics will blow you away. If you want to chat more about it just PM me.

Hi,
Matt from Canberra here.
Me and a few mates are flying in and around the northside...Belconnen and Gungahlin as often as we can.
I've been flying for years on glow, and am a recent electric convert, but can't go back now.
We have a few of the Dynam Focus 400's and the Cessna off ebay. These are surprisingly capable models. As long as you keep in mind that they are $150 complete (radio, brushless, lipo, charger etc...), they are not bad. Of foam construction, the Focus pulls vertical no problems, and flies quite slowly when requested. Quality is average, but they have proven to be a pretty good second model for a few of my friends.
I also have a World Models EP Voodoo Mustang ARF.
Am also looking to convert my old glow models to electric.
Interesting reading about the club membership issue...we are constantly on the hunt for a reasonable park to fly in that doens't have people, and is not within cooee of houses etc. Weetangera behind the school is looking favourable.
Cheers,
Matt

I'll confess I haven't trawled through the entire thread...but it looks like you've got a Canberra person anyways, so I'll keep in the loop of when you're coming through, and come out for a watch!!
You'd need to get a photo of it with Telstra Tower, or Parliament House in the background...that should be easy enough!!

I'm enjoying my Hawk and my Katana EP.
Got a Twinstar and have ordered a wireless camera, so am keen to get that going.
Turns out August is Canberra's windiest month (apparently) so it hasn't been ideal conditions here.

Hey SoP
It's going really well, it's a great motor for the price. It is definately my favourite at the moment. I just wish we didn't have so much wind, so I could get in some more flying time in.
One question though, what battery are you using, 3s or 4s? I'm running a 3s and been thinking of trying a 4s for that little bit extra power.

When is it likely to come through?

Yeah Damian , your rite about that ie traveling slower ect....Stinkweed does'nt seem too concerned...even "Laid-back" about its lack of progress , so at this rate , we'll be flying it in our summer ....IF it gets here at all...:<

@Paul: I've actually been watching your YouKnowWatt thread over on RCG. Do you know how long before you'll have one to sell?
Other than that, my flying is now restricted to early morning flying due the the spring winds here in Canberra. And since I have trouble getting out of bed that early on the weekends, there's not much flying atm. :red:

Damian,
Could be a little while - I'm running into some teething troubles with it - just not sure of the source/nature of the problem yet. Basically, while i'm getting great voltage readings, my current readings are still bouncing around like a ferret on espresso.
Of course, the YouKnowWatt, like the ESC, are open developments, so other people can step in and make their own too :D
Today I'm busy with making up some more ESCs for orders... and also working on the new Normaliser design (I hate non-linear math :( ).
I know what you mean about getting out of bed ... I generally am doing an 8am -> midnight sort of routine at the moment, however a 6am -> 10pm would be better for me overall.
Paul.

Gday guys, only found this thread by accident.:<:. Great idea, though the feedback from the other "Overseas" experts is bloody helpful. :tc:. I'm only new to this gig, though I've been around for over half a century, bought a Twister Chinook a few weeks back, and became hooked on all things RC Electric. Spend have my down time at home surfin looking at new merchandise :silly:, and reading the posts on this site to compare...Anyway, Happy Easter and may the Easter Bilby bring you happy hours in the air..
