I am looking for anything on the Hawthorne model Aero company of Hawthorne,NJ. They produced some scale rubber powered model kits in the very early 30s, possibly late 20s. I have found ads in old Model Airplane News (then titled as Model Airplane News and Junior Mechanics) from 1930 and 1931,but nothing later. I am assuming they did not last very long. I have one of their kits, they call it a Curtiss Hawk, looks very much like a P6E. It is a very basic kit,no printwood, but the material is supplied, along with patterns on the plan. Most of the ads show about six different models as I recall.
Would very much like to find any info on who started the company, when, and when they ceased production. Would also like to exchange info with anyone else who might have a kit.
I have contacted the public library in Hawthorne, who promised to do some searching and get back with me,but they never did. Also contacted the local chamber of commerce with no results. Spoke several months ago with a modeler who lived near there, but he didn't know anything about the company.
I need this for an article that KAPPA, a club that publishes a newsletter every three months dealing with old models and their history, would like to do. They are aware of the company, and have a file started on them, but not much info so far. I believe the kit that I have is the only one they have a record of.
If you would be interested in receiving this publication, let me know and I will furnish tha address. It is very interesting to anyone into the old models. Back issues are available, and for sale and wanted ads are free.
