Greetings all. I am just curious how accurate the FMS sim is for 3D flying. I am new to flying (3mos) and currently fly mainly just a combat wing and a Slo-V. I have been playing with various models on FMS to see what may spark my interest next and I am having a TON of fun with a Shockflyer Edge540 flat foam model on FMS. I am a little squirelly still, but I am also using a slightly modded USB playstation style joystick to fly with. My mod being I took out the centering spring on the left stick to make it closer to a true TX. My only TX right now is a 3ch Neon FM so even if I did have a cable, it wont work.

Are they really this much fun to fly and that crazy maneuverable? Can they be flown in wind (5mph or so?) or are these just indoor/dead calm flyers? Am I just asking for some serious trouble? I was looking at the Yak 55/brushless combo that is on sale at HobbyLobby. Will it fly OK non-brushless? I just think I may be jumping in way over my head. I have watched vids, and it looks like the ticket for the small field I fly at.

Thanks!

FMS is not very accurate but it gives you an idea what to expect from a plane.

Shocks are huge fun and very manoeuvrable!
They fly best with no wind or in very calm conditions. When you feel confident with the plane you can fly it with a bit of wind.
I would go brushless! The investment is a bit bigger but it is sure worth it!

Hmm, I may have to get one while they are still on sale. It also gives me an excuse to finally upgrade to a nice computer radio :D Even if I dont fly it for a while, its a good deal and I can practice with my new radio on the sim.

hello there, i have FMS myself and well I had been flying 3D and knew the basics when i got the adapter for my radio. well FMS not accurate gives you a idea and with enough controls these small foamies will do all kinda weird fun stuff. the shocky's are really nice flying planes. brushless is the way to go with 3D I Dont think you will ever enjoy flying 3D w/o brushless and the expence going in might be higher then you would like, you will save in the long run. I had brushed on my foam plane and it hardly flew no WOT but for a second or I would have killed the motor. The foamy's can be flown in a little wind once you get used to flying them. good luck.

I totally agree with the guys on this one about both issues but especially the brushless issue. When I first started foamies about two years ago I was not completley sure if I would continue them so I chose the "less expensive" route and went with a brushed set up. Big mistake! In no time I had replaced enough motors to buy a couple of brushless motors. The deal is, if you try foamies you'll like flying them so much you'll more than likely always have at least one. Or in my case, eight.
