Hi Timmer,

I just finished my slow stick. It was my first ARF plane. You'll like it a lot. Here is a thread I posted when I was buying all my stuff.

http://www.wattflyer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17923

Everyone pretty much said to go brushless and lipo from the start. Thats the route I took. My brushless motor and esc was only like 25 bucks.

My stick takes off in three feet, its awesome.

If you need any help building just let me know. (the instructions are really hard to understand)

I'm building my second one now. They are addicting!
You'll really like the plane!

I would get some dubro ez-connectors for the servos (new kits come with thicker control rods, so get the larger connectors). Makes for a much easier build.

I second that!

I ordered mine from Jeff at Heads up RC, they make things so much easier. Worht their weight in gold! I got 9 of them!

I prefer bigger servos for the Slow Stick. It has huge control surfaces and a good beefy servo will last thru many bumps and jolts of learning with it. I used HS-81 servos but there are many out there cheap that will work. brushless would of course be preferable but the SS flies great with the stock setup too. I know you don't want lipos but they are real cheap now, especially for an application like this.
My 2 cents anyway

I agree, with a brushless setup you don't have to worry much about weight so i9t's better to get bigger servos.

I have my controls to the max. It does really tight loops and tight turns. Lots of fun.

Can anyone give me a link to a good brushless system for a go beginner?

Yes it will make it ewasier to learn, the plane will climb better and smother. Not to mention the increased flight time you will get. (I get at least 20 + minutes)... Also your brushless motor will not get worn out. You should never have to replace it. (no brushes to wear out) It is so worth the extra few bucks to go brushless and lipo. (you can use the motor in lots of other planes as well as the battery)

You do not have to replace any drive gears. The brushless motor from Jeff comes with a motor mount. You simply take off the the motor mount thats on there now and slide the one it came with on to the motor. Then the whole thing just slides right on the stick. It's really easy.

This is what I have on my stick...

The 2410-9Y motor and ESC Combo

and

11.1 1200 mah battery

Ok thanks. Just wanted to make sure because i have a brushless in my rc car and it goes 50 and I know I didn't want that when i was starting in that. I have not dealt with lipo at all in the cars, so whats a good blance charge that won't be a whole lot of $$? And do i need both a charger and a blance charger or can i just us a blance charger every time?

Here is the charger I got, same place. I really like ordering from Heads UP RC, prices are good ans shipping is cheap.

E-mail him and tell him you want the AC adapter as well. This charger is very good.

Don;t worry about the speed of the slow stick (I know where you are coming from the SS is my second RC plane)

It still flys very very slow. The benefits of the brushless setup is that it literally takes off in a couple feet with full power. It doesn't really fly fast but it climbs pretty much straight up at full power. You can always power back. I take off with full power and then pull the power back to 1/4 and just buzz around. I wish I could show you a video. Its awesome.

Plus you'll always have the power incase you need to get some altitude quick. Just put the coals on and the thing just goes up up up!

I like to climb like crazy and just pull the power off and glide around.

;)

Oh sorry you do not need both a balancer and a charger, the charger I listed is a balacing charger.

Is there a big difference between the 1200mah and this one http://cgi.ebay.com/Lipo-Battery-11-1v-1000mah-10C-10-amp-Lithium-Polymer_W0QQitemZ220103373186QQihZ012QQcategoryZ34 056QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem

Nope not much, your flight time will be a little less probably not to noticeable though. That battery will be fine for the stick

make sure you get these connectors for your control rods

http://cgi.ebay.com/SERVO-ARM-EASY-CONNECTORS-TEN_W0QQitemZ220106181047QQihZ012QQcategoryZ34056Q QtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem

It will be the best 10 bucks you ever spend in this hobby. With these you dont have to bend your control rods. You just slide them through these connectors and tighten them down where you need the rod to be.

Sounds good Timmer! What color did you get?

It does seem like a lot but most of it is a one time purchase, you'll be able to uswe the battery, motor, ESC, servos, receiver and of course the battery charger in different airplanes if you want to.
