I was wondering if anybody has heard of these or possibly even flown one?? It's a full body EPP foamie with pre-installed electronics and comes receiver ready.

I bought one the other day from my LHS and I'm just waiting for my new micro RX unit and crystal to arrive before I can complete the assembly and try it out...

http://www.modelflight.com.au/rc_model_electric_planes/phoenix_400_wing.htm

...looks as if it's going to rocket along with the speed 480 motor and sleek design but I was looking for some more information and I can't seem to find a website for the manufacturer. Apparently they are a Chinese company called OMP but I've been unable to find any reference to them. The only other thing I know is that they make micro RX units too!!

It came receiver-ready with servos, motor decals and ESC already mounted for $119.00AU (About $89.00US) so I'm really hoping that it flies as good as the price was!! As for any other information??? ...it's a mystery!!

Hmmm...the only OMP I know of is Ohio Model Products. They make some really nice profile planes and just came out with an electric heli.

It looks very simular to the Multiplex Microjet. There are some differences, but the general shape is the same. I know that Walkera sells a clone of the microjet also. If it is, then it will fly nice and fast.

Man, that Microjet looks great!! And it's probably the closest I've seen to the Phoenix. Hopefully they'll fly the same!! Do you nkow if the Microjet is available in Australia?? I've never heard of them either!!

I'd check with your retailers to see if they carry Multiplex products or check with Aircraft World.

I was at the LHS today and yes they carry some Multiplex products. They had the funny looking one with the canard wing at the front and they could order in the Twin Jet and the Lupo but had no information on the Micro Jet. They're getting back to me...

Hi ,
Just wondering if thats a typo for the $119. Iv been considering one too, but their website says 169 dollars and not 119??

BTW, you must of flown it by now on the stock set up. How does she go? Fast??
Cheers

No Typo!! I suspect my LHS (Kellet's Hobbies - Liverpool NSW) had it priced wrong... I believe that Modelflight (Who distribute this plane in Australia) do a bare fuse version with decals for arount $100.00 and I asked three time if it was the right price, the guy behind the counter assured me that it was so all I can say is Happy Days!! :) :)

You could give Kellet's a try, they do mail order too, but I think I may have got the last one they had in stock. Give it a try, http://www.kellettshobbies.com.au/ you've got nothing to lose. By the way, I still haven't got any real reliable radio gear that I'd trust in a fast wing...

I only have a 4 channel GWS TX and a couple of GWS 6 channel RX's and in the Slow Stick it gets the twitches at about 75 meters tops, so I'm not willing to risk the Phoenix on this gear until I pick up a new JR Max66 TX or similar...  I don't really want to end up with a pile of EPP foam balls on the ground!!

I did see them on http://www.modelflight.com.au for $169.00 as well and I've spoken to one of the sales guys there who tests the new planes(My dream job...), He told me that the OMP Phoenix is super stable in flight, great in moderate winds and very responsive through the flapperons for excellent aerobatic performance. He did also warn me that if you don't hold onto it you will be in trouble as it covers ground very quickly and can really take off on you if you don't stay right on top of it!!

Good luck!!

Thanks for that. Appreciate the info. Its sounding good, but my Windrider Ele-bee wing has just arrived in the post, and it took me ages to get the missus to let me have this, so i will have to do a bit of scaming to get permission for one of these.

I own a MAX 66 which im very happy with. I had two R610 receivers but one starting getting the jitters (and worse) pretty badly and caused me to crash my other wing a few times, so i actually just got one of those GWS 6 channel receivers your talking about to put in my new Ele-bee. I got it just as a cheap receiver to use in my new wing, thinking that the 300 meter range should be fine. Well i havent flown the new wing yet, as im waiting on some elevons, but i have to say, im already not happy that i bought a cheap receiver. It seems to have the jitters a little already! First and last time i buy a cheap receiver. I had the TX sitting on the table next to me, and had the model up near my nose with the prop just a few inches away and it decided to twitch and power up full bore. The wing hit the deck and lucky for me, i still have the tip of my nose.

The TX antenna was down, but the radio was only a few feet from the receiver. So much for the 300 meter range!

By the way, i did a bit of searching and Frontline hobbies are selling the Phoenix for about 120 as well, and in a slope kit for about sixty something.

It looks like Modelflight might have gone way overpriced on this one!
Still, $119 does seem way cheap for an EPP wing, with receiver, servos and speedy included!

I was going to get the missus to get me one of those new ARF Stukas that modelflight is selling for Xmas, but i just may change it to one of these now, since it seems such a bargain. Still, id be interested to hear a few modellers ideas about how it flys, rather than the sales pitch stuff.

Cheers.

Hi,

Just noticed your post about your GWS RX. I suggest you take it back. I just had a very similar experience with a Unicorn wing (my first one) and had to send the GWS back. Apparently, almost everyone is having problems with the 6ch models. I am using a couple of 4Ch GWS and they usually work ok, but occasionally glitch.

I'm with you though....no more cheapie receivers. Berg or Hitec Electron 6, all the way...

Thanks Steve, I guess that explains it. I got mine off one of those guys on ebay that sell them, so chances probably arent that good about getting the dollars back May just be a lesson learnt the hard way. (Dont buy cheapass receivers!).

I just went and did a range check with it, and got about 5 or 6 meters which should be fine for its claimed 300 meter range. 10 meters on a range check is out of sight performance im told, and i certainly get that with my AU$100 JR610R receiver. (the one that works that is) Anyway, the GWS seems to be fine right now?!?!

But then again, I like to take my wings to the beach and usually fly right out over the water. Beats the hell out of those guys with their boring kites (sorry if any kite flyers happen to be readin :D) Anyway, the point is, the receiver may not be playing up right now, but it certainly was the other day when i was setting the model up, so even though it may be an intermittant thing, it just aint worth risking it. (otherwise i might be watching my new wing sail away)

Jeez. i tryed to get feedback on these GWS6 channel receivers before i bought one but couldnt, now im hear to give it, Don't buy one! :(

i got mine as a sloper from modelflight a week or so ago, just put in the electrics. very cheap and VERY small, but looks like fun. i put a warp 4 turn in mine and running a small apc prop, with a cc phoenix 25 and a hyperion 1200 3s 20c battery. haven't flown it yet.

At last I get to log on.
I spotted a Pheonix on special at Kellets for about $90AUD.
A friend had been flying a Microjet (actually I was trying to teach him how to fly fixed wing with it!;-) ) and I was impressed with it's performance.
I assumed the Pheonix would be similar....
How wrong I was, :{
Set up straight out of the box, this thing refused to fly no matter what I did.
With the batteries just off the charger, and throwing it as hard as I could, it would barely stagger around a circuit of me before just nosing into the ground.
I will admit the damn thing is tough, ::o and the moulded ABS nose would get all crumpled up, then just pop back into shape (sort of).

Having had enough of this, I ripped out the useless brushed motor and ESC, and fitted a 1800kv outrunner.
Not having a suitable APC prop at the time, I dug around in my old model box and found a three blade 6x3 from a Cox .049 :<
Loaded with a 1300mah 11.1v Lipo battery, I could now throw the thing up at a 45° angle, and it would keep going!!
Unfortunately, getting to fly now showed up some of it's other failings, primarily the crap servo's fitted to it.
The pheonix tends to be hard to trim as the servo's tend to lag so it always feels a bit divergent.
It also has the glide angle of a Brick :(
All in all, nothing great and now my friend has a Funjet, which flies even better than the Microjet.:D
I was going to put in some better servo's (I'd already changed the badly positioned control horns still in the pictures that broke off) to see if it flew any better, but I might just concentrate on my new Heli.
Arthur.

Hey Arthur,

I totally agree with you on the Phoenix wing!! This thing stock is a total pile of steaming number two's. I also could not get the damn thing up in the air no matter what I tried, so I did a similar brushless mod to mine with a TP BM2408-21 outrunner and 18 amp ESC spinning a GWS 8x4.3 SF prop and juiced up with a 1300Mah 3S 20-30C LiPo.

I thought all this would solve my problems but no!! It still limped around the field and nosed in several times. Luckilly without any damage. The only thing I can say in it's defence is that it sure is tough!!! I tried another tact by climbing as high as I could then diving down at high speed and levelling out. This was the only time that it has ever flown semi-good, and then only for about another lap until it nosed in again.

I've experimented with shifting the CG around but without any real gain in flight performance and it all came to a head a few weeks ago when I managed to crash it inverted and the fins snagged in the edge of a cricket pitch, snapped off and were reversed on the under of the wing!!

It was one of the maddest things I've ever seen because it took a good 20 seconds to realise exactly what had happened and the four of us who were flying that day just broke up with laughter!! It would be almost impossible to ever repeat what I did, but I was fortunate enough to have a camera with me and snapped a few pics of the crashed wing exactly where it finished up...

After we stopped laughing, I eventually turned it over and disconnected the battery pack then snapped this one...

All I can say is that this wing has been a real dog to fly, and about as airworthy as a lead balloon!! I'll shortly be stripping it down and moving the electronics over into something new. I'm currently looking at the Great Planes "Slinger" but I'm open to other suggestions.

Cheers!!
