I would like to know what are you guys running on your SU-27, here is what I have:
Himax 2015-4100 with the 4.4-1 gear
Phoenix-25
Thunder Power (http://www.rcuniverse.com/buynow/keywordclick.cfm?bid_id=2381) 1320mah
APC 7x5
I call Maxx Products and they recommend using the Himax 2808-1160 and experiment with the prop up to a 9x5; but how about a Himax 2812-1080.
Any input will be appreciated.

I have looked at this plane - it is amazing!! What performance are you getting with the 2015?
The 2808-1160 is a 100W outrunner if I am correct. That would give you performance similar to the 2015 I would imagine.
The 2812 is more closely related to the 2025, which is substantially more powerful.

It flies ok with the 2015 nothing spectacular, I'm buying a 2812-1080 and will see what happen.
Even with the 2015 I'm having a lots of fun I must admit

j - Glad to hear it - how does it handle in the air? Any different than say a pattern plane like the formosa? Harder to fly?
Sounds like a good choice - I would prop it for 15amps or so, and see her scream!

I am reviewing the SU-27. It is a great kit. I finished it up last week, but the weather hasn't cooperated for a maiden. I am running the D/13/32 geared 1.93:1 and swinging a 7x5 apc prop. Gives up about 160 watts and plenty of thrust while run up static. I hope to get some flights in this weekend, but the weather doesn't look like it will play nice again!
Most are running Mega 3 and 4 turn motors on theirs. Definately more than enough power at around 200 watts, but they are having problems balancing.

Mike - Do you have a link to the motor you are running?

Mike - Interesting - This is an outrunner designed to run in a gearbox rather than Direct drive? Seems to be comparable to the Himax 2025, is this correct?

Very easy to fly and look awsome in the air. I guess you can related to a sport plane like a Big Stik, very easy to fly. But not a plane for a beginner. The only thing that keep me worry is the propeller in the rear, I haven't attempt to hand lanched my self yet, always I get somebodys help. But I have not have any problem with the hand launch, not even the well know left roll tendency.

It is a very interesting motor. Runs pretty smooth. I much prefer a DD solution as the Ultrafly GB is pretty noisey. But it will go like stink :). I had the Ultrafly A/29 on the Hawk and it was a screamer. I ended up pushing the motor a little too hard and it decided to slip out of its Carbon Fiber case. Easy fix, but it cost me the plane.
Jucava,
I know exactly what you mean about launching. I have someone else do it for me as well. I think we are going to build a pedal launcher to keep at the field. It can be used for hotliners as well as jets.

I'm also working on a launcher, let me know more about it, cause I have no clue.

Here is an excellent thread with a materials list and build pictures. This is the one we are going to build.

I have mine now with a:
Himax 2812-1080
Phoenix 25
Thunder Power 1320 mah
APC 7x5E
It does the cobra and really looks cool, This combo give me arround 12 min full throttle flight time. I will experiment with a 7x6 or 7x8; already try an APC 8x6 and didn't like it.

did you test that set up? Do you know how many rpms you were getting and what kinda amps you were pulling? I have the 2015 geared 6.6:1 with a 12X6 gws on my 3d planes.and have the 2025 on a delta with a 4.4:1 with a 9x6 APC slow flyer.

I used the lowest gear that came with that motor (4.4:1) and the plane used to need a good toss to fly, and always full throttle, no reserve power, I never messure rpms nor wattage, the plane flies with that setup, but you will much more happy with the 2812-1080 or eve the 2816(more power and more weight). I'm getting 12 min flights and that is plenty for me. It even does the cobra but you have to be careful cause the aileron gets reverse during this maneuver.

My elevator control horn broke and the best way to repair it was to wrap it with strip cat5e cable it is holding for now but I would like to solder a metal arm instead. Be warned this is a weak point on this plane

UBL,
I am using the Mega 16/15/3 DD in mine and it was built stock for the review. 270 watts and it is a screamer. No problems with the Elevator at all.

I had one with a Warp 4 (I don't recall exactly which one) brushless. It was pretty quick and flew well. I didn't change anything from the kit (other than opening up the intakes to reduce drag) including the elevators or hardware and had no problems. One thing I would recommend would be to beef up the area between the front of the canopy and the nose as this is the weakest point of the plane. With any kind of a tough landing this area would fail...probably due to my oversized battery pack, but a weak spot nevertheless.

Thanks, Mike
I just wanted to be able to see it easily. It still didn't help when I went into the Sun with it once and trashed my eyesight just long enough for it to bite the dust. :) That's why everything I mentioned about it is in the past tense.

My buddy had the SU-27 and I got the F-16. We both ran a Himax 2815/2000 KV direct drive inrunner motors on 3S and a 6X5.5 prop. Here are 2 videos of me doing some high speed passes. On one of the videos you can see the crazy roll rate this plane had. I retired the airframe for the winter, I didn't want to be bellylanding her on ice and snow. I just might have to put her back in service this summer.
I did have to add weight to the nose to get the CG with the inrunner mounted to her. But it was worth it. I also glassed the entire plane, she flew real nice.

What size prop are you using and how much is your amp draw?
