Anyone collecting old flying model kits? Balsa, stick and tissue, rubber, gas, freeflite, u control, rc. Many of these are good candidates for conversion to EP. I am interested in exchanging info and possible trades.
Also old model mags, plans, and organizations dealing with this stuff. I am presently a member of KAPPA and just joined M.E.C.A., the one dealing with old motors. Anyone know of others?
Have somewhere around one hundred fifty kits at present, going back as far as 30s. Also several hundred magazines.
Some interesting stuff for a modeler, at least a 70 year old like me.

Here's some of mine.

I'm trading out the Cleveland type and getting more from the 60's and 70's.

I really never intended on being a kit collector, but lo and behold
I guess I am. I have over two hundred kits from 1945 Comet Goldberg
Sailplane to Sterling peanut kits. I am 81 and will not build many of
these. Will sell or trade some for the right kit. Does anyone have a
!938 Scientific Valkyrie 24" rubber powered kit? First Goldberg kit I
built. Thanks, Cecil KAPPA 016F

I would really love to find the first kit I ever tried to build. It was a wartime Ace Whitman of about 15" wingspan. A very junky ,funky kit with cardboard fuslage formers assembled on a triangular cardboard jig that w as removed once stringers were added. AS I recall, there was little,or no balsa in this kit, since balsa was a strategic material.
I was about 8 yrs old in the mid forties when my mother purchased this kit for me. Probably cost a dime, maybe a little more.
I am looking for this kit in any condition, or parts thereof. Even a plan or a box. I have another of the kits in this series I believe, but want the exact one I had as a kid.
Lou Buffardi, with KAPPA, advertised the one I'm looking for several yrs ago in the club news letter, but it is long since gone, and he doesn't recall who he sold it to.
I contacted AMA to see if they had the plan, but they couldn't help.
I know its a piece of junk, But I'll pay a good price, depending on condition. Check your stuff, even if you have one not for sale, copies of the plan and printwood would help. Jerry

Jerry, A friend of mine is into collecting kits big time.
He has a couple Joe Ott and Ace Whitman kits.
Do you remember which model?

If he has it, he'll copy the plans and printwood for you.

This is the Russian Yak 9. It had about a 15" span, and is labled as "Ace Whitman" and not the Whitman publishing company,as more often seen. I don't know the kit number.
Any help will certainly be appreciated, and will pay for copies and trouble.
I also have several Joe Ott and Whitman publishing company kits, and believe I have one of a different plane in the same series as the one I am looking for. Jerry

I have a closet full of old Sterling, Berkeley, Jetco, Marks Models, and many more modern kits from Guillows etc., many that I may never build because my current fleet is taking up all the storage and building room I have and my models last longer now. I will inventory the pile and post a list.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to imply that I intended to sell kits in near future.

I never really intended to become a kit collector, just continued to improve my flying while buying more kits until I stopped making room for new flyable airplanes.

An update to my 60 some odd year memory. I've been looking for the wrong airplane all the time, the Yak kit doesn't even exist apparentley in this particular kit form. My contact with a collector far more experienced than me thru the MECCA publication, has convinced me that what I'm looking for is the Ace Whitman Stormovick in the 15" or 16" wingspan. He has the kit,but not for sale. He has been kind enough to promise to send me a copy of the plan and color pics of the box. I feel sure this is it, but will know when I get the info from him. Still looking for a kit though.

While it's technically not kit collecting, I do have several planes that need building.

Quick, because every day the gf looks more and more ready to toss them out while I am at work...

Just recently built what I think is my oldest kit-a VERY old Monarch Vitamin 1/2A. Powered with a VERY old OK Cub .074. I think Monarch went OOB well before Cleveland did. Although my Berkely Curtis A-12 or Master Modelcraft Strato Streak kits COULD be a bit older. Anybody know how long ago Kitco was selling kits? Never heard of 'em till I was given a few. Have a few Sterling kits as well, but I think I got the oldest of those about 1968. Also have a Midwest (former Kenhi) Panther CL kit. Think I have some late 40s plans as well,FF and CL, nothing in radio that old.

Had a very interesting old Air Trails magazine, but the particular pages made it especially interesting got turned into mouse nest. Caption on a photo was that with planes like this, NOBODY would dare attack our country! Plane was a B-17B. Issue was December 1941. Spoke a bit too soon.

While I was reading this, this was on the desk next to me.
I thought it was the same, it's not, it's Dec 1937.

But I have seen that issue.. somewhere.

Right. What I remember of the mag I mentioned, it was on an editorial page with about 5 other captioned pictures of other planes, civil and military.

Some of those older magazines are so fascinating!

I like reading the old magazines more than the newer ones.
But there was a lot of propaganda though.
Today I guess it's called "spin".

The old Flying Aces, (later became Flying Models) from the 30s and 40s were very interesting to me. Not only one or two plans, many of them full size included, but also several short stories per issue. The humorous ones about the WWI flyer ( his name was Phineas something) were always a hoot. Also a lot of wartime stuff from the 40s 0n.

Found it, December 1941 Air Trails. Did you need any of the pages scanned?

And from Joe Archibald, mini novel from Flying Aces, February 1938.

Phineas Pinkham, Lieutenant, U.S. Flying Corps,

I couldn't remember the name either, drove me nuts I had to go through a lot of magazines to find it.

Cecil, I thought it was that one too. I guess that was from, Around the World in 80 Days.

Cecil, I'm thinking about it, pm me what you want for it. By the way, I'm looking for Guillows B-29 and I've seen you were selling one of them. Is it sold?
I also looking for Guillows Piper Tomahawk.
About B-17. Can anybody tell to me, noob, which of B-17 is better, Sterling or Guilows? Others? I'm thinking about building it for electric r/c.

Well this will be my first post - Back in the 50's I badgered my mother for a birthday present of a "Scalemaster kits, Stuka Ju87" which she had a heck of a time getting it by mail. She did get one for me but I didn't start it because I was young and didn't want to mess it up. Lost track of it during some moves across country and would love to have another one or a set of plans if any exist. I don't know what happened to Scalemaster, but I have only ever found one reference to a set of plans from them and it wasn't a Stuka.
Does anyone have any info on this kit?

I am not familiar with that kit maker, but if you will check with AMA,there is a good chance they can furnish a copy of that plan. Jerry
