I was just given a unbuilt F-16, and am considering changing the stock motor to a brushless. Has anyone out there got any ideas as to which combo would fit the mounting holes, and not burn up as it would need to be able to turn a large fan. The stuff I'm used too is for park fliers and 3-D so wouldn't handle anything like the fan.

if you can find the diagram of the fan and housing diameter and hole spacing thatd help. the specs of the motor show brushed 4100kv at 5 oz and close to 30A draw for that 450g thrust.
id bet that if you dropped the nimhs for lipos at 11.1V and went brushless there'd be a whole lotta weight savings there alone.
8 nimhs = approx 16oz plus ap29l motor = 22oz.
for short flight time.
3 lipos at 5 oz and brushless motor at 2.7 oz for same thrust is weight savings of 14 oz and current draw at around 20A for longer flight too.

Be sure and balalnce your fan rotor. This is critical if you go with a 4S set-up as Kyosho fans are known to throw blades at high power levels. Also, upgrade to the aluminum spinner if you plan on going to 4S. One less plastic part to worry about failing.

Very true Rob. I bought one of these when they first came out. I put the astroflight wattage to it (that was the set up back then) ground checked it for flight. The third time I ran the motor up the plastic fan broke and part of it came right out the side of the fuse! Termite, balance the fan or get an alloy one as suggested. I learned the hard way.
Take care,

Wow - quick responses. Thanks. I'll see about the mega16 and start witha 3s that I have several lying around. If it flies like it looks, should be fun.

I personally use a Mega 16/20/2 on 4s in mine with a turned down Kamdax IC impeller. Around 700 watts of FUN.
The biggest problem with the Kyosho isn't so much the impeller as it is the spinner that blows apart and in turn destroys the impeller.
There are lots of folks running the 3 turn on 4s with the stock impeller who have experienced no problems with impeller failure.
Just don't use the spinner and yes BALANCE is VERY important!!!!
