View Full Version : Phoenix 110HV, 12S and AXi 5345-16 SCREECH

I'm having a little trouble with a fairly high-end setup here. Running a 12S pack on a Phoenix 110 with an AXi 5345-16 and a 24x10 prop.
Timing setting is LOW. PWM setting is 13KHz. Brake is disabled. LiPoly cutoff is set to soft and 36.0V.
At about half throttle, there motor makes a NASTY noise like a piece of metal on a grinder. It's only at about half throttle. Above, it's fine. Below, it's fine.
I've messed with timing and PWM settings, but if I modify them at all, the motor won't even start! It just jerks and twitches with ANY other combination of settings.
The software revision is the 1.56 beta version.

Sounds like there's something going on with the motor...do you have another ESC you could test with? If not, with timing at low and PWM at 13KHz on v1.55 does it do this? Have you extended any of the wires between the motor and ESC? Direct soldered or using connectors? Smaller prop help?

Unfortunately, I have neither another ESC, nor another prop to try. The prop is already a size smaller than AXi recommends (24x12 is what they call for).
Wires are all stock length. I am using 5mm (yes, FIVE millimeter) gold-plated bullet connectors from Venom Racing.
Any ideas what Dan Landis's setup was at NEAT last year? He was running the preproduction 5345/16 motor and a 110HV ESC on the 1.56 beta firmware (I believe it was alpha at the time), and I don't recall any strange noises from his setup.
This seems to be a pretty common thing with all my AXi/Phoenix combinations, all the way from a lowly 4120/14 and Phoneix 60 through this latest monster. They don't like anything but the low timing and 13KHz PWM setting. Even with these settings, the bigger ones have all screeched at full throttle on freshly-charged batteries up until now. This half-throttle thing is a new one on me.

Just watched the SKS video of NEAT 2006, and was pleased to find that they featured Dan's AirWild Extra 260 with the prototype AXI 5345/16. He's running a 24x12 APC Electric prop and a 12S LiPoly pack on a Castle 110HV, so obviously it can be done with the right settings. Very encouraging :)

I have exactly the same problem as yours. Did you solve it?

Christophe...drop timing to low advance and re-try.

I don't think that's going to help much. He states that he does have it set to low timing. I haven't tried mine yet, but I have 3 CC110HV's that I will be running on Neu 1912/2Y on 12x12, 10s, Hacker A50-14S on 6s-10s, Hacker A50-14L Electric Turbine on 6s-10s. I hope I don't have any issues with these set ups. This is my first High Voltage set ups for a Hanger 9 Sundowner 50, Kyosho Fockewulf 50, Kyosho Kelly Racer and eventually a Thunder Tiger Rare Bear 1/6 scale pylon racer.

i have the hv 110 on a 87 3dhs shp running a hacker a60 16l,i had to go to #4 on my timing to keep from the schwelch..i actually dropped the plane from a kinda low hover/parachute.when went from low to high throttle,it squealed and lost power.i had just went to a hotter battery as the zippys i was running didnt do this..the hotter jackpowers were i guess the culprit..after my adjustment,i havent had that problem again..just thought id add this as to if you guys change batts, its best to wring it out on the ground to check for scwelch before finding out like i did in the air...cost me 180 bucks to get plane going again lol...
