View Full Version : Astro 05 FAI geared

I picked up an Astro05 FAI Race with the gear box at an auction yesterday and have a couple of questions. I will be building a 630 sq. in. Kerswap for SAM LER oldtimer and have no idea what size prop to use. I also have no idea how to mount it in the nose of an old-timer. I am an experienced flier of old-timers but with glow engines. My only experience with electric was a few yrs. ago with a geared speed 400 in a 360sq. in. So-Long that I was not happy with. It would not take off out of a grass field. John.

I have an Astro 05 FAI with silver brushes that I've used in a Playboy and an Astro Challenger. I started flying the Playboy with a 11x7 zinger prop on 7 cells...but Lipolys have changed everything! Now I fly both models with a 2000mah lipoly pack and 13x7 CAM folding prop. Almost straight up at least 15 times!:D ...try it you'll never go back...and everyone will want their planes to climb that way.

Unfortunately I want to fly in SAM competition and only ni-cads are allowed. John.

...it still climbs rather well on 7 cells. I've used a 1950mah zapped nicad pack with great success.....and the 13x7 folder.;)

I used mine in in a Die Schwing a few years ago with a 12x8 and 8 cells and it climbed very nicely.
I ought to get that motor/GB off the shelf and put it in something again.
Keep 'em hummin'
