This thread is being born due to a conversation that accidentally got started on the humor board. Thanks to Voyager2lcats for the suggestion to move over here where our ongoing discussion makes more sense.

I'm new to this site, but have been flying RC off & on for over 15 years. Just bought my first electric which is what brought me here. You can probably tell who my favorite team is by my screenname & avatar!

For those of you who may be interested, there is a big group of us that play College Football Pick 'Em every year on ESPN's web site.

http://games.espn.go.com/cpickem/frontpage

Once you get logged in, you can find us here:

Group name: Volunteers
Password: 2007ncaa

Don't let the name scare you. We have fans from lots of different teams that participate. It's just those of us that actually set it up each year get to choose the name!

Good job! We can start up again.:) Although I have to admit to liking hijacking Grasshopper's thread. We have a friendly rivalry going that is beyond silly. I can't even begin to describe how it came about. Check member list for FlyingMonkey. Wow, I can't even help hijacking this thread.
Now what were we saying?

Spurrier is brilliant. I thought Lou Holtz was good, but I remember Spurrier WINNING at DUKE. Now those are two words that definitely do not go together in NCAA football. Even Spurrier is going to have to deal with the low expectations of his recruits- they seem to be able to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory unless he practically flogs them in public!

Actually, I think our current conversation was winding down. I may be sparse for the next little while. I spent my morning looking up the historical TN versus VA Tech, and TN versus South Carolina records. The 4 letter word called W-O-R-K has now caught up to me!!

Well I'll chime in here too then! I like any thread where I can talk about Tennessee Football, good season or not I'll always be a Vol Fan!

Born and raised in East Tennessee but the Air Force carried me away. Been living all over the world now for the last 26 years but my heart is still in Knoxville and always will be!

Bob,

I can't agree more. I am not an "alum", but during my middle and high school years, I spent 2-4 weeks of every summer there for music camp (Instruments are fun! See what you can do with a trumpet?) and love that campus. My father went there. Thats the only connection. That and I live in Illinois. But like you said, some egg-head feels it is offensive. Why is it any more offensive than Florida's Seminoles? I just don't get it.

Stupid NCAA.

Granted, I am more a college basketball fan, but if the Illini are playing, I'll enjoy sitting and watching. Especially now that my Packers are about done for another 35-40 years........

My sophomore year was the first time in 35 years we did not have a record better than .500 for the season. This year we get back to 500 after being crappy as all hell the last few. Just you wait...USC is going to topple sooner or later and the pac 10 will be shuffled up big time! We dont have a USC in washington...only a SUC!

"gfdengine204" - Sounds like yet another fireman in the group!

Vol,

Yup, like Bill, I am also "retired", though I retired by moving out of my FD's district. I was a Paid-On-Call firefighter for a Chicago suburb, and also worked 5 years on a rural ambulance squad. My full time profession is also like Bill's: I am a police dispatcher, with 16 yrs on the Illinois State Police, and 2 yrs prior as a local county 911 dispatcher. I also spent 5 years as a First Responder and EMT instructor for ISP. Now, I do my 8 hrs in the comm center, then come home to my family and occasionally get to fly. :)

And, from the Virginia Tech website:

What Is a Hokie?

A Look at Virginia Tech Traditions

Here is the answer to that oft-posed question, "What's a Hokie?" and an explanation of other Tech traditions.
What is a Hokie? The origin of the word "Hokie" has nothing to do with a turkey. It was coined by O. M. Stull (class of 1896), who used it in a spirit yell he wrote for a competition.
Here's how that competition came to be held. Virginia Tech was founded in 1872 as a land-grant institution and was named Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College. In 1896, the Virginia General Assembly officially changed the college's name to Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute, a name so long that citizens shortened it in popular usage to VPI. The original college cheer, which made reference to the original name of the institution, was no longer suitable. Thus, a contest was held to select a new spirit yell, and Stull won the $5 top prize for his cheer, now known as Old Hokie:
Hoki, Hoki, Hoki, Hy.
Techs, Techs, V.P.I.
Sola-Rex, Sola-Rah.
Polytechs - Vir-gin-ia.
Rae, Ri, V.P.I.
Later, the phrase "Team! Team! Team!" was added at the end, and an "e" was added to "Hoki."
Stull later said that he made up the word as an attention-grabber. Though he may not have known it, "Hokie" (in its various forms) has been around at least since 1842. According to Johann Norstedt, now a retired Virginia Tech English professor, "[Hokie was] a word that people used to express feeling, approval, excitement, surprise. Hokie, then, is a word like 'hooray,' or 'yeah,' or 'rah.'" Whatever its original meaning, the word in the popular cheer did, as Stull wanted, grab attention and has been a part of Virginia Tech tradition ever since.

Kev, I don't think you were ignored on liking the Illini (much).

Vols4Ever, a Hokie is just a nonsense word a VPI & SU (Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University) student wrote into the football fight song back in whenever. Our official mascot is- get ready- the Fighting Gobblers.:silly: So I'll take Hokies.

Hey now, that's the Florida STATE Seminoles to you! :D

Actually, there's an interesting story about the name. A few years ago when the NCAA went all PC on us, they wanted FSU to change the mascot (and my High School went from the Rickards Redskins to the Rickards Warriors, go figure  ). Well, since the Seminole indian tribe is still around, the tribal leaders actually wrote to the NCAA to let them know how PROUD they were of FSU to carry the Seminole name. So that ended that.

OK, I was born in Panama City, but grew up in Tallahassee. I'm a die hard FSU fan (can'tcha tell ;)). I bleed Garnet & Gold. I even have a Slow Stick done up in FSU colors.

Reports are out that our quarterback Ainge (who I've never liked anyway) has a broken finger on his throwing hand, but he's still planning to play Saturday. Personally, I think the backup Crompton is THE MAN for the long haul. Plus he's a sophomore.

Maybe he'll get a chance to showcase some talent on Saturday night!

Don't know much about Ainge. I am going to have to watch more SEC games this season to get up to speed. In the past it has usually been unneeded frustration to watch the Gamecocks- especially losing to Clemson.:blah:

Bad weekend for us (which is pretty much what I expected). At least ours wasn't as bad as the poor Wolverines in Ann Arbor. Wow.

I guess Ainge played OK, but I still question the ability of Fulmer/Cutcliffe to put together a high powered offense. Every time we get into a 3rd and long, they choose to either (A) run it up the middle or (B) throw a 3-5 yard out pattern. Neither call makes any sense at all. THROW THE COTTON-PICKIN' BALL DOWN THE FIELD!!!

Here are my grades for the game:

Offense: B-
Defense: C
Special Teams: D

If we don't do better than this, Florida will absolutely KILL us in Gainesville. Hopefully Southern Miss will give us one more game to work out the kinks. If they beat us in Knoxville, I may have to pick another team this year!

Voyager2lcats
09-04-2007, 03:47 PM
Vol4Ever,

Yeah I caught the first half of the game and I thought Ainge played decent- high completion rate, no interceptions. Defense- inconsistent, especially the secondary. Special teams needs a lot of practice. But I thought they were hanging with Cal while I was watching. Not great, but not bad.:)

P.S. I guess I had a good Saturday. South Carolina and Virginia Tech both won ugly.

Didn't Georgia get beat two weeks in a row by teams from Tennessee last year? UT and some high powered school from Nashville called Vanderbuilt!:Q

It can only get better this year huh?

I think the Vols played good Saturday, Hey it was against the 12th ranked teeam in the country for crying out loud. Not like those directional scools most teams played to start out. Not that it mattered much to Michigan though... lol

UT has to improve the Defense to beat anybody significant this year. 40+ points per game just aint gonna cut it.

Ainge needs to be able to throw the ball downfield more too. He has a good completion pecentage but a lot of those were outlet passes for small gains.

crxmanpat
09-04-2007, 10:21 PM
Man, the FSU-Clemson game was just downright ugly. Was that the high school squad out there the first half? Only 1 first down the entire half (second play of the game)?

At least they showed some life in the second half, but it was mostly due to defense and special teams. Weatherford just couldn't seem to find any rythem at all, and was constantly being pressured by the Clemson front 4. And as usual, the running game was non-existant.

Oh well, I still expect the next few years to continue to be a rebuilding of the program. I just don't understand where it all broke down. Up until 2001, it was almost unheard of for FSU to loose 2 games in a season. Now we're lucky if we can stay above .500 for the year.

firemanbill
09-04-2007, 10:35 PM
Pat I thinks it's more that the "other" teams have caught up. Used to all you would hear about the blue chip recruits was what top ten school they would be going too. Now recruiting has expanded and some of these really good kids are going to some lesser schools for more playing time, which breeds more recruiting.

That coupled with the reduced number of scholarhips over the years and the NCAA cracking down on boosters and such have really leveled the playing field a lot.

crxmanpat
09-04-2007, 11:02 PM
I agree that the other teams in the ACC have really stepped up their programs. The first 6 years or so that FSU was a member, they just slaughtered everybody. Now look at the teams like Virginia Tech, Clemson, NC State, and even Maryland has stepped it up.

But still, FSU seems to suffer from poor execution, especially the past 3 years. But at least we're not the only ones. Miami has had their struggles as well. I guess it all just goes in cylces. I mean, way back in the 70's Alabama was a dominating program. Then Miami and Oklahoma in the 80's, FSU and Ohio State in the 90's, and Florida and USC now.

It will be weird to me when Bobby Bowden finally stops coaching. He's been the FSU head coach for as long as I can remember, and he has a lifetime contract with FSU. I wonder if Micky Andrews, the defensive coordinator, would step up in his place?

#22 TENNESSEE @ #5 Florida (comments not allowed :p)
Pittsburgh @ MICHIGAN STATE
#10 OHIO STATE @ Washington
Notre Dame @ MICHIGAN
#16 Arkansas @ ALABAMA
#9 LOUISVILLE @ Kentucky
#21 Boston College @ #15 GEORGIA TECH
BRIGHAM YOUNG @ Tulsa
FLORIDA STATE @ Colorado
#1 USC @ #14 Nebraska

Any thoughts? I'm afraid Florida is going to wax my beloved Vols in the Swamp, but I always pick that one with my heart. Hopefully they'll prove my gut wrong. I'd gladly stick my foot in my mouth. I think Bill has it correct: don't count 'em until they've played. Obviously you're forecasting, so you make an educated choice. Tennessee vs. Florida is going to be tough- period. I thought- insert conventional wisdom- that Virginia Tech was going to be an easy choice for Top Ten honors and South Carolina would bump along winning one here, losing another there, and maybe getting a minor bowl bid. Now, who knows?;)

I would KILL (hypothetically, of course) for Nebraska to take down the Trojans. I have a friend who moved here from Southern Cal who constantly talks, talks, talks. We get so sick of it. Just don't see it in the cards, though. Washington over Ohio State has a better chance of happening, in my opinion. That was the last one I picked.

I like your choices Volfan! Especially UT!;-) Watch out for Washington. They looked awfully tough last week. Nichigan should bounce back and beat ND, at least I hope so anyway... I would love to see Nebraska win but I don't think it'll happen...

anyway, some good games for sure this weekend!

I think after last week that a lot can still happen to surprise us. I would generally agree with your picks. BC always scares me because they can beat anyone when they are up. I have had some scares watching them play Virginia Tech in the past.:<:

Well, I guess Buckshot headed for the hills. I sort of thought he'd check back in (especially knowing that all this is just in good fun). Anyway, here are ESPN's games this week. My personal picks are listed in CAPS. The ESPN games are straight up. Spreads ARE NOT taken into account.

#22 TENNESSEE @ #5 Florida (comments not allowed :p)
Pittsburgh @ MICHIGAN STATE
#10 OHIO STATE @ Washington
Notre Dame @ MICHIGAN
#16 Arkansas @ ALABAMA
#9 LOUISVILLE @ Kentucky
#21 Boston College @ #15 GEORGIA TECH
BRIGHAM YOUNG @ Tulsa
FLORIDA STATE @ Colorado
#1 USC @ #14 Nebraska

Any thoughts? I'm afraid Florida is going to wax my beloved Vols in the Swamp, but I always pick that one with my heart. Hopefully they'll prove my gut wrong. I'd gladly stick my foot in my mouth. Comments on my other picks? They're mostly the favorites which always makes me nervous. Gotta be some upsets brewing in there somewhere (GO VOLS!)

Yea youre gonna have to keep an eye out for the Purple Storm out here in washington. Them Big Ten schools dont do so well against the spread option (if you doubt me look at Florida clobbering OSU last year in bcs champ game and michigan gettin beat out by appalachian and oregon).

Goodness gracious. Words just can't describe what Fulmer put on the field yesterday. After the first quarter where we actually had a fighting chance, it was utter and COMPLETE domination. Playing like that, Florida is going to go far (again). I *love* their style of offense. The players seem to actually enjoy themselves when they are on the field.

You can pretty much tell what type of day the Vols are going to have when they come out of the tunnel. Yesterday was no different. They just jogged out looking bewildered. Absolutely no fire whatsoever. Fulmer has lost the ability to motivate the troops, and bringing Cutcliffe back was a step BACKWARDS. Our offense has become so predictable even the opposing cheerleaders could run the defense against it.

After watching the Bama / Arkansas game last night, they both scare me to death the way we're playing. I'll be glad when Fulmer's gone, and the players re-adopt an attitude of actually wanting to play the game again.

:(

I agree bud... Fulmer is stuck in the 80's and always will be. Until they get rid of him and bring in a whole new system, (which they won't) we'll be the best second place team in the SEC east.

Now with Floridas big win you have 3 deserving teams with an argument for #1... It is going to be interesting

Vol4Ever,
It's tough to watch your team when they are ineptly handled by a coach, especially when your team has a LONG tradition of winning (Notre Dame ring a bell?). Except I don't feel sorry for Notre Dame- I remember my roommate at Virginia Tech pulling for them while the Hokies struggled (I won't say what year:)). Never did care for ND and their hype machine.

Yep. Notre Dame and Michigan being down doesn't bother me a bit, but I'll bet their die hard fans feel about like I do. Both those schools as well as Tennessee have historically been 9 to 10 win teams year in & year out. I agree that the BCS is going to be interesting. Maybe this will be the year where the NCAA officials finally see the light & adopt some sort of playoff system.

Was anyone watching the Bama/Georgia game Sat night? (Great game, by the way). Did anyone catch ESPN's Mike Patrick dreaming about Britney Spears during the overtime period? Out of the absolute blue, Patrick says to his co-host “I have an important question. What is Britney doing with her life?” The co-host just sits there in stunned silence and finally says “Who?”. It continues downhill from there. The whole exchange is absolutely hysterical, but it makes NO sense whatsoever. See video:

I've been thinking lately that Bobby is nearing the end. But I think the problems lately have been that FSU is no longer the only high profile school in the ACC. A lot of other programs have really stepped it up since FSU came in, and a lot of them are getting recruits that would normally have been a lock for FSU.

Anyway, it's all good. This rivalry seems to swing back and forth as far as momentum. And although UF is the reigning BCS champ, I think FSU is due. :D

College football is indeed WACKY this season. Glad to see the Swamp drained, though. That puts TN back in the thick of the SEC, but I don't think it will matter. Between Georgia, South Carolina, Arkansas, and Alabama, I foresee at least 2 (if not 3) losses. We'll also struggle with Kentucky and possibly even Mississippi State (yes Mississippi State). Should Phat Phil run the table, I'll be first in line to congratulate him & accept my portion of crow! Probably not much danger of that unfortunately . . . . :( In my opinion, the outcome of the Georgia game will make or break our season.

Yessir. Should be a great SEC matchup as neither team seems to be hitting on all cylinders this year. Game is definitely an elimination match based on how the win-loss records are stacking up for the rest of the conference. What I don't understand is how we are favored by 2. Ya'll are #15. We're not even ranked. Plus we're playing like total crap right now. I guess it's the "Neyland factor".

I do think that among Georgia, Bama, South Carolina, and Arkansas . . . Georgia is still our best chance for a win. I'm going to re-post my predictions in color to see how they hold up as the season plays out:

Georgia
Bama
South Carolina
Arkansas
- - Tennessee loses 2, possibly 3. Georgia is the most probable win.

Mississippi State
Kentucky
- - Tennessee goes 1-1.

Louisiana-Lafayette
Vanderbilt
- - Tennessee wins both

FINAL RECORD: 7-5 (4-4 SEC)

Care to put your thoughts on GA's future? Good luck tomorrow. The dawgs better bring their earmuffs . . . .

I think Tennessee has a decent chance against Bama as well. They didn't look all that good when FSU played them a few weeks ago, and FSU isn't up to snuff this year either.

Coming up we have NC State at home, Wake Forest away, and Miami and Duke at home this month. I can see us going 2-2, with NC State and Miami being the tough games.

Then we finish off with Boston College, VA Tech, Maryland and Florida. I see 2-2 again, possibly 1-3 if BC is tough.

Of course, this all depends on who the QB is. Xavier Lee showed promise, and may take over the start from Drew Weatherford. We'll see what happens.

And of course, GO NOLES!!!! :D

This is good stuff. College football needs this kind of competition. The smaller schools should have their chance to play with the big boys, but I believe the major programs are afraid to play some of these really good smaller colleges. Television exposure has really helped the smaller programs as well. Look what happened with Marshall University as an example. They may not be in the thick of it this year, but I won't count them out for the future.

Well, it looks like USF got hit by the curse before OSU. It was a nice play though (fake field goal converted for a TD). So I guess that means OSU loses tomorrow. :D

One can only hope!:p:D

Hmm, I wonder. When it's all said and done, will there be any undefeated teams left this year? With the loss by USF, that leaves 5 I think in the top 25?

Well I don't think OSU will last and BC plays Va Tech next thursday so they will probably go down as well...

that leaves Arizona State, Kansas and Hawaii... not to sure about any of them or their schedules.

ASU is playing some quality ball this year. They had tough games against Washington and Wash St and got by them, but they got USC coming up. They better man up for that game or they're going down as well.

One word . . . . . UGH.

My predictions from back on 9/30/07 are still holding up. Sad part is we're NOT done losing yet. The wheels are finally falling off the Phat Phulmer reign (and it's about time!)

EDIT: Cutcliffe & Chavis need to go right behind him. Do a full house cleaning & re-build from scratch. Coaches have got to find a way to make TN football interesting again. They have become so predictable, I think the opposing cheerleaders could coach against us.

I read about it in the State paper and it sounds like Alabama tore Tennessee a new orifice. Ouch! South Carolina finally decided to roll over and play dead on offense- we were scratching by for weeks and Spurrier knows it. I am going to keep my fingers crossed for Virginia Tech against BC. BC's Ryan is another QB with magic in his fingers if you don't get after him. Even a strong rush isn't always enough to get him- he will stand there and take it like a man. Groan.

I think I'm going to invest in a big supply of stickem' and send it to the FSU althletic office. Seems nobody can hang onto the ball anymore. And I'll also get some No Doze for the defense. We literally gave the game away to Miami in the last 2 minutes of play.

And watch, we'll wind up beating Florida this year.

Did you see Virginia Tech and BC Thursday night? BC does NOTHING all game until 5 minutes are left in the fourth quarter. So what happens? Yep. Fulmer's safe again, but what sucks is that it has NOTHING to do with his performance. UT didn't win that game. South Carolina lost it. Now TN sits alone atop the SEC east with a potentially clear shot to Atlanta if they can get their heads out of their you-know-whats. I still contend that the bulk of this success is due to everyone else losing when it counted. To get back in my good graces, Fulmer is going to have to basically win out with *decisive* victories. The South Carolina game was a clear picture of Fulmer's coaching mantra: get ahead & PROTECT THAT LEAD. In the SEC, you just can't let off like that.

Sorry for the rant. I can just see a scenario where all this saves Fulmer's job, and then next year we won't be so lucky to have all the other teams losing around us.

Wow, another #2 goes down in flames (and fortunately for me, my team was the spoiler! :D). Why is it that FSU can go into Boston and beat the #2 team in the nation, who by the way was also undefeated, but we can't get by teams like Clemson, Miami (having a horrible year) and Wake Forest?

And watch, we'll win out now (including Florida and VT). It would be nice to see a little more consistency from our offense. Although I do think they've improved over last year (but not by much). I hope next year will be back to the FSU I grew up with, where most seasons saw only 1 loss.

Well, the wife and I are headed to Knoxvegas this weekend for the Tennessee / Arkansas game. At this point, I don't know what to think. The Vols and the Hogs both have 2 VERY distinct teams. If both bring their "A" game, it should be a whale of a match. If both bring their "B" game, it should be a whale of a *boring* match. If only 1 of the 2 bring their "A" game, it will be a blowout.

Glad I'm not a betting man. I wouldn't have a clue where to go with this one.

Just looking forward to being in beautiful East TN!

Well, 1 more week (regular season, that is) in this wacky season. If there has ever been a season that screamed PLAYOFF, this is it. My Vols are continuing to pull out the slimmest of victories which may have saved Phat Phil's Phanny for one more year, but I still think we need new coaching blood in Knoxville. Hard to believe that we are only one win away from Atlanta as crappy as we've played this year. Luckily, the game I got to attend (Arkansas) was the absolute best they've put on the field all year. I would put that team up against anyone in the country. Their *other* team that usually shows up would struggle against some of the better D2 schools!

Oh well, bowl season is just about upon us . . . . .

My two schools are heading in opposite directions: South Carolina won six in a row at the start, has done nothing but lose in fairly close games recently. Sucks to lose by two points- I guess that's why you don't let teams block your punts. Virginia Tech- holy cow! Tyrod Taylor is doing the best on-field imitation of Michael Vick I have ever seen. I would not have thought that back in October against Clemson. And the Florida State game was the clincher- Tech beat Florida State for the first time ever. That felt good.:)

Now that the bowls are here, a group of us play lots of the freebie Pick 'Em games on ESPN (college football, bowls, NASCAR, March Madness, etc.) If any of you want to jump in on the bowl games, go here:
