out of curiosity, can the rotor bell of a brushless motor be made our ot a mild magnetic steel as well, or just iron? what about hard magnetic steel?

As long as its a ferromagnetic steel it should be fine. If your talking stainless, the 400 series is magnetic while anything in the 300 series would not be suitable ie: nonmagnetic. Most nickle iron steel would be suitable but you should check the actual properties of the grade as magnetic properties vary widely depending on trace alloying materials. Silicon steel is suitable but is very brittle & hard to machine. Hope this helps. What type of steel were you thinking of ?

1013 Low Carbon, becuase it's cheap, and easy to machine. once it is hardened, it is still very magnetic.
do you have a better suggestion?

just to keep me from looking like an idiot: i am well aware that 1013 LC does not heat treat without first being carburized. i know a place that, every month, sends stuff in for carburization and heat treating, made out of the same alloy, and have agreed to let me throw it in the pile many times in the past.

Cheap & easy sounds good. As long as the steel is ferromagnetic it will work for an endbell. Really only need to go with expensive hard sil or nick steel when your dealing with laminations for the stator core, where you want as much permiability as possible. I wish I could find MU metal or Permalloy in powdered form at -300mesh for my motor cores. Right now I'm stuck with 99.9%carbonite iron, but it's working OK. I'd still like more permiability though.

If you wish to salvage some large loudspeakers ,the centre pole piece is very good, designed to transmit flux made in special batch orders. ;)

Found another metal that is working good for this application & you can purchase thin wall tubing, less material to machine off.
4130 chrome molly aircraft tubing.
