There was an idea started by a modeler name Hoser that flew EDF Jets that for some reason...just struck me as a great idea. Hoser and I spoke about tweaking the logo and chartering a division for the prop side of the house. He agreed and here we are. The KW prop club started a year ago this month (8-10-04) and to date I have shipped over 73 decals from the USA to Sweden to Australia and almost everywhere in between. It has been a huge success. The correct symbol for kilowatt is kW. Feedback was received from members and the decision was made to be a bit different and so the Kw was born.
There is no cost to the member. Hoser and I fund this project as a thank you to each modeler who breaks a KW barrier. We feel these individuals are treading new territory and pushing the electric side of the hobby to new lengths. At SEFF '05, it was a good feeling to see well over a handful of pilots that were members of the Kw club and proudly displaying the decal on their plane, field box and cooler.
To qualify:
A photo and description of the setup (motor, batteries, amps etc), a photo of the wattmeter results that displays the Watts, Amps and volts and a minimum of one successful flight. Yep..that is all there is to it. Then PM me you mailing address and I will send you out a decal (2Kw are on order as of this post).
Post your Kw setups here and lets get the WattFlyer Kw club going!
And if you want some apparel :) http://www.cafepress.com/kwclub

While looking over the past posts I found this one about the Kw club. I checked with Mike and he said it was still going on. Said I should make a post and get it going again. I'm new to this so I had to run my numbers past him to see if I had it right. So here is my setup and the pictures to match.
Here is a picture of me and my plane at the field. I have 18 flights on her at this time, but some were just up, 3/4 turn, and lineup to land. (It can be a tricky plane to land with flaps and wind). I was planning on a 4 cell setup, but needed nose weight so I went with a 5 cell to get my CG with no lead. Next is a shot of the nose layout. There you see I'm running the Power 46, Phoenix 60A ESC, 5 cell TrueRC Lipos with 4000 mA, and pulling around 6.7lb of plane. Then there's the watt meter with the numbers. I thought the batt was going to go dead or someone was going to loose a finger before we could get a good clear picture. This is not an easy thing to do with the plane screaming away at full throttle mulching anything within 10 ft of the blades.
I have seen as high as 66A on a full pack running 20.78VDC, but that was before replacing my Phoenix 85 for the Phoenix 60 ESC. I had to re-prop it to keep it under 60A. Here's a post where a few of us are working on these things http://www.wattflyer.com/forums/showthread.php?p=193722#post193722
As I have read the past posts it seems like many more planes on here could hit this mark easy. My Corsair (has not flown yet so doesn't count) with a Power 60 and an Evo 20 6 cell will be coming in at a little over 2000 Watts. So let's get this post going again and see who the other new members are. Thanks Jon

I know where you are coming from with trying to get an image of the Wattmeter. So I have found a workaround that has set me free to analyze to my hearts content. Sometimes more information than I really should look at :)
Check out the Eagle tree products. Then not only can you see and analyze what's happening on the ground, but in the air. Its one of the most usefull things I've done since getting into Electric in 1996.

Noticed Bill's "1Kw" award and came looking for more information. You know how you can tell you have too many planes? When you think to yourself, "What a cool personal record that would be to have a plane to gets over 1,000W. Wonder if I'll ever have anything that powerful ..."
And then you remember you've got a 2,800W EDF sitting up on the shelf that you've never touched because you're still waiting on batteries. :D Still don't know if I'll be able to ever reach that 1,000W mark on a prop plane, though ... that's a pretty cool accomplishment!
Wish I could have it ready for SEFF, but my Zippy packs have been on order since March 1st and I'm still waiting on them (they're in stock, but some piddly little $10 packs are holding up my order, and I don't know how to make HobbyCity partial ship).

I'm a bit of an newby, so forgive me if I speak out of line, but I have a wattmeter similar to the one in your photos I believe. An Astro 101? In my
(limited) experience I find (after a static run on the wattmeter) that I can disconect my ESC, while leaving the meter still plugged into the battery, thereby still retaining all my readings on the meter. Is there a reason why, in your photo, you need to have motor running for the pic.
Incidentally I think you are a blessed man. I don't know how many times I have said to myself. "Geeeez........I wish I had a third hand";-)
I am still a few weeks away from first flight of my first electric plane, so my entry will be coming along sometime early May

K gotcha, i think about 5years from now i could reach this goal lol. A bit expensive a motor that spins a 20in prop and a battery to power that beast, do you use like a 5 or 10cell pack? I bet that giant flying wing with 2 big electric motors and a 10cell lipo could get a kw or 2 award.

I used my Astro Wattmeter for years, and about 2 years ago got the Eagletree Data Recorder. So far it is one of the best tools I have bought for Electric. It gives you so much information it's unbelievable. And I don't use all the available functions. And putting it in the plane gives you analysis in the air as well. Attaching one of my bench test Graphs and a Flight graph as examples.

I have found myself doing more building and flying and less online reading. I have come a long way from my 1Kw award. As soon as I get the pictures and numbers I'll post them. Here are two pictures of me at the "Indiana Warbird Campain" which are large scale planes 80" and larger. The P-38 is set up like the P-51 that got me my 1Kw only it has 2X the motors and has a 3 blade prop. the total Kw should be in the 2350 range. The Zero and the P-47 are both running on Power 160's with 20X10 props. I am running two 10cell 5000mA bundles I made myself using single cells from China. This should hold you until I have the hard numbers to post.

Mike, I did the video edit (hard to do with the black blur but I tried) and was behind the sticks of the Goblin. The vertical didn't get checked out, I was happy to be able to control it in level flight. In future flights it might taste some vertical. I've flown it 3 times now and I'm still scared of it. ::o Brad does know how to build a plane.

This is the first time I have seen this post. I recently became a member of the 1KW club!
My entry is a T-Rex 600CF helicopter. I am running a Steve Neu 1515 2.5D/F/H 1700kv motor, Castle Creations Phoenix HV85 esc, Flight Power Evo25 6S 4900mah packs, all swinging 600mm carbon fiber V-Blades. I took it out for the first time last weekend and here is my Eagle Tree data. 1763 max watts, 85.99 high amps, with a low voltage of 20.5V. This is a huge jump over my 900w T-Rex 500cf and my "little" 400w 3D Hobby Shop Extra 300 shp.

Well Glacier Girl pointed me this way as I was interested in those cool Kw badges. This is my entry and will post pics of my Watt meter after the intake on the plane finishes curing. She had a rough first flight attempt and 2 susbequent rough landings requiring an intake rebuild.
Specs:
Motor: Little Screamers New JS-1400
Fan unit: HET 6904
ESC: Turnigy 60A Plush
Battery : 2 X Loong Max 4S 25C 2250 in parallel (4500mah)
Amps : 88.7 After 5 seconds
Volts : 14.11V After 5 seconds
Watts : 1268W After 5 seconds
Exit Tailpipe Diameter : 58mm
The Math doesn't add up to wha the watt meter says as the pics were taken with my came phone and it has a delay but they were all taken as close to the same 5 second interval as possible. I can only take 5 second bursts as my ESC thermal shuts down at the 6 second mark as its being severly pushed.
Jason
Build Thread: http://www.wattflyer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31185
P.S. She has been dopplered at around 108 mph as she can only sprint for 6 seconds due to the ESC. She is gonna be recieving a 80A version of her current ESC by the end of the month.

Laine, I was waiting for Brad to answer since he built it (I just fly it & have it in my hangar now:$ ) but since he hasn't answered....
We used a "how Fast" meter in it & it told us 96 mph. The location we were at was 3000 ft above sea level & the meter has this chart with a correction factor for altitude. So at 3000ft the correction factor was to multiply by 1.03, came out to 98.88 mph. It seemed a lot faster than that, so I"m looking at relocating the pressure tubes to make sure it was in clean air. It might have been catching some boundary layer airflow that moves slower across the surface of the fuselage. I'll have a better idea when I take it out to the sod farm next weekend. Oh and here's a really good inflight picture of it from the maiden flight before the how fast meter was installed. (we stuck the sensor tubes right through the front of the canopy)

Can I give you a photo of one motor showing it is producing over 500W?

Liquid, do you have any extra connectors & some wire? You could make a parallel connector to feed the two battery packs into the meter & a reverse parrallel splitter to feed out of the meter to each ESC/motor. That should show the total power.

No problems at all. The Shaft was supported by both motors on each endbell (front and back). It isnt shown here, but a Bearing was added in the front plate to assist with the load. It was really a stellar setup. But the only problem was cost. As you mentioned, it did take two of everything. Two motors, Two HV110 ESC's and an 8S2P for each side. It was ground breaking (to a point) at the time, however more powerful single motors and higher rated ESC's came along that really made it obsolete.

Almost breaking the 4kw club but 3kw is fine too! Here's my 3DHS 87" Extra 300 SHP with the initial A123 setup. Switching back to lipos if that tells you anything...Here's the powerplant setup:
Hacker A60-18L/Hacker Spin 99/14s2p A123's 24 x 12 APC e. Plus 2 x A123's for the Rx pack. AUW around 18lbs.
1st flight numbers from Spin Box:
Here's some numbers off the Spin Box for flight 1 with the A123's. Guessing weight around high 17 to 18+lbs :
Max Current: 78.3A
39.06V 6:41 duration
Min. Current: 44.6A
40.74V 7:47 duration
Max Voltage: 47.89V
Min Votage: 38.92V
Actual Voltage: 48.83V
Off Voltage: 44.31
Motor Run Time: 6:31
Flight #2:
Max Current: 81.7 amps
38.35v 7:46min.
Min. Current: 57.2amps
40.23v 3:54min.
Max Voltage: 52,85v
Min. Voltage: 36.91v
Actual: 53.16v
Off Voltage : 43.07v
Motor Run Time: 7:50min.
Power on time: 9:03
Had issues with A123's and am switching back to lipos. I'll try and update with some more Spin Box numbers with lipos. Looks like I might have broken 4kw with the last flight using a 25 x 12.5 apc-e. But mid 3500-3700watts is probably a reasonable estimate. Lots of fun and what an airframe! This is arguably one of the best 50cc sized airframes on the market today. I made some SFG's for my beta test version but the production versions all have them stock. Even better KE and rolling maneuvers with it. I'll also be trying out a Scorpion 5455 when they come out too. Should have a Neu 1521 sometime this year to test out too. Probably going to save that one for Bipe-XXL though:Q Let me know what I've got to do to grab a 3KW sticker!

Hey Mike! I've got another one for ya'. :)
I'm really excited to be posting this--even moreso than I was when I posted my Screamin' Delta Demon to the 100+MPH thread.
This is my submission for the 1KW badge:
Plane: World Models Rambler - 30 (http://www.rcuniverse.com/product_guide/kitprofile.cfm?kit_id=1130) (bought used without a power setup)
Motor: Turnigy 50-55 600 (http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=4907)
ESC: Flying 70A Brushless ESC (http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.11983)
Prop: JXF 12x8 Poly Composite (http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=5522)
Battery: 4 x ABF ~20C 2200mah 3S lipos (http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=6451) wired in a 6S2P configuration (4400mah 6S)
I hooked the plane up to my Watts Up! meter, braced it, set it to full throttle, and I got a max watt reading of 1336W, with a peak amp reading of 60.95A. Pictures of the meter readings are below:
79050 79051
Below is a picture of the plane just before the maiden:
79052
And of course the obligatory embarassing photo the wife took of the plane nosed in because I forgot to keep up elevator applied while taxiing across the rough soccer turf after landing. :)
79053
Here's a fixed angle video I took of the maiden:
http://www.vimeo.com/1791692
Doppler analysis (http://www.wattflyer.com/forums/showpost.php?p=479721&postcount=638) showed my fastest flyby at between 103 and 106mph. And you gotta love the sound it makes flying over--almost like a real plane. :)
Also, for reference, here's (http://www.wattflyer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=39307) a thread I started covering the experience of my maiden flight with the plane.
Let me know if I need to provide some additional information or pics, Mike.
Man, I'm so giddy about this. Ya'll here on WF have sure turned me into SUCH a plane nerd.
Thanks for that. ;)

Ha Ha Ha. The DW is a great flying plane. It is incredibly stable. The motor mount is a bad design, but I fixed that with some 1/4" ply. As long as the nose landing gear locks, it is a kitten to land. I have 4 successful flights with her. Even my Emergency Landing with 1 motor hanging out of the plane was smooth.

Just like racing speed is expensive, how fast do you want to go...
See, I don't really think that's always the case. I got my Screamin' Delta Demon up over 100mph for around $50 (got the balsa and monokote airframe used for $5, add in a $14 high kv inrunner, $11 30amp ESC, $12 20C 1300mah 3S, and an $11 72mhz Rx). Granted, I got a steal on the airframe, but you could always just go with a narrow delta foamie design and probably get the same result using those electrics.
same for flying, power is expensive, how Big you want to go?
Now this one you're more right about, but mainly because of the cost of batteries. The plane with everything minus power system I bought used for $50. I got my Turnigy 50-55 600 motor for about $43, my 6S 4400mah battery pack cost me $80 (4 x 2200mah 3S in 6S2P), and the 70 amp ESC cost me $24. Oh, and the motor mount cost me $12. Add in some shipping, and it was around $200 altogether to get a plane with a 1300kw power setup. Still, though--I think I came out cheaper than most of you guys.
I think that's my niche--getting the most zip possible for my pennies. I get nearly as much fun out of calculating my per watt or per mph cost as I do out of flying the things. :)

Thats too bad, looks like it was flying great. Four flights out of a motor is a little pricey though!
Sounds like you may need to go easier on the throttle management :)
Letting the motor cool down with a pass or two at very low throttle before you land helps too. Going from a hi power run to a dead stop is hard on these motors as the heat built up in the rotor has a hard time getting out without air flow and a chance to cool down over time.
Ive heard some guys recomend running at 1/4 throttle for a minute or so after landing. Not sure how effective that would be though.

Here is a post by a modeler who did some detailed testing and reports about the rotor heating at extreme power levels. Good reading for hi power edf setups.

Oh my goodness.... I have two new girlfriends. Daisy and LucyLu at H-Energy. I'm gonna get in trouble with my wife because I LOVE DAISY & LucyLu!! Any girls that give me batteries like this, are high on my list for sure.

I made a couple of changes to my electric TRex 600 last weekend. I got a new set of Rhino 4S 4000 25C packs and wired them up in series to get an 8S 4000 pack. I played with the settings on my HV85 and switched my blades from VBlades to Radix. I was very impressed with how the new packs and my trusty Scorpion HK4025 890kv motor performed. I was able to hit a new personla record of 3.1KW!!! Here are a couple of pic of the the Eagle Tree Data to back it up. This was only the third cycle on these packs. Only time will tell how long they hold up to the abuse.
Current setup is a Scorpion HK4025 890kv motor, Dual Rhino 4S 25C 4000mah packs to make an 8S 4000 pack, Castle Creations Phoenix HV85 esc, 600mm Radix blaes, 16T pinion. I topped out at 3181W, high amp draw of 107.9A, and a low voltage of 27.72v.

2kw coming up as soon as i get sorted the high speed control problem.
funny this plane, it has so much torque that i feel it when i change throttle.
i need to counter it on the aileron, at low speed its so bad that the aileron struggles with it =D

Add some weight to the right wing tip, like a Big finish Nail, Thats helps alot, you may not even feel it when landing too, because you will be landing fast because of the power systems weight  :D

If your power system is pulling at least 1000 Watts, you submit a photo of a watt meter showing the numbers and you get a cool little badge under your member name here on Wattflyer. :D
I just ran up my Great Planes Revolver with a Hacker A40-10L and 6S2P A123 packs. Per attached its running 1115 watts.
Also have two others that are running at, or just a few watts below one Kilowatt.
I'd like that little "Icon" by my name :D :D

Yessir, I was there! It even provoked some snide comment from one of the dedicated gas-huffers close by!
"Can you point that somewhere else?" he said... And this is the guy who earlier was trying to hand-start a gas radial without so much as a glove on...
Yay for the Kilowatt club, Boo to the haters! lol

Does this Kw club also apply to helis? I intend to submit on the plank side soon too.
I helis qualify my blinged up Swift 16 has peaked over 2400 w.
Are we looking for continuous power? That's a little harder to do with a HEli!

Coming soon, my Plank entry for the KW club. 72" Nitroplanes Yak 54 with Exceed monster 160 and 21 X 8 electric wood prop. Didn't get pics of the Wattmeter tonight but unofficial 2550W, 67 amps, no rpm's yet. Hey it was almost dark. Hobbywing 100A HV opto. Pulls almost like a 50CC.

I think we should get multiple KW club icons. I have planes in the 1kw, 2kw and 3kw groups... then again, if we did that, maybe my little space would get a little bit too filled up.

These from after work today. 66 amps, 2450 watts. I'm impressed with the Exceed 160. Not as much with the prop, too noisy- I think the tips are flexing.
Changed to high timing. Making 2550 W.
