I am just gettng started in this whole r/c plane thing. And am looking to get the best for my money. I bought a plane already just a basic trainer with a 500 speed motor in it. I am trying to find out what types of batteries to run in it for both Li-Po and Ni-hm. Also if I wanted to convert it from the 500 speed motor to a brushless set up what would be good to go with? I don't know much about any of this so any help would be great.

Hey there, what kind of plane is it? I mean do you know the name of it.that would help alot.if your new to Rc im not sure lipos are the best for you Ni-hm are easy and anyone can mess with them w/o problems, unless you know alot about batterys allready?
do you just need to know what kinda motor and speed controller you need or do you need a radio and everything?

The plane is an Kyosho Etude 1200 with a speed 500 motor in it. Basically a covered foam fuse with covered balsa wing. It's a 4 channel plane as it has ailerons on the wings. Weighs a bit which would explane the big motor. I got it off of rcuniverse. I had planed on using a futaba micro setup to keep the weight down.
I am basically looking for a good set up to go with that would give me a good flying plane with some good flight duration so i don't get stuck buying a ton a batteries.
Like I said I would like recomendations for both the motor I already have. And maybe some ideas for a brushless set up as well.
Thanks Jason.

Im not sure about that plane or motor.I would go brushless if it was me,but I know money could be a problem Im sure someone here can help you more.as Im not sure what brushelss motors will replace the Speed 500.if you get a brushless set up you have to get a new esc and all so you might not want to do that.Brushed is cheaper.heavy planes dont fly good tho,I dont guess you know how much it weighs do you?

In regards to batteries - as long as you take the recommended precautions, starting off with Lipos is fine and will give you much better runtimes and much lighter weight. You could go with nimh packs though, depending on weight.
What does the plane weigh - fully loaded and ready to fly?

Go lipo and save money in the long run. Just learn how to charge them. It just like anything else if you use it properly you wont have any trouble. How much does the plane weigh?

Best guess and this is just with the motor in as I have not bought the other items yet would be maybe around 2 pounds. It has an exact wingspan of 4ft. I have held one of the parkzone p-51's fully loaded and ready to go and weight wise it's about the same maybe a tad less. But the wingspan on my plae is greater.

Question: what is the weight and wing area of the plane??? What type/brand motor?? gearbox ratio if applicable??? prop size???
Since you have the stock power system you can run the calaculations using Motocal ( free trial for 30 days ) or a freeby at www.andersonparkflyers.com (http://www.andersonparkflyers.com) from that point on now that you have that info you can chose a more better/efficent brushless lipo setup.
I would go with lipo's.....
Lipos, being lighter than NiMh and NiCd will help cut down on weight and bring down the wing load......lighter wing loading = easier to fly plane for beginners

I unfortunantly don't know the exact weight. I bought the plane off of rcuniverse and the manual did not come with it. It has a 4 foot wing span and doesn't weigh anymore then the parkzone p51 that has a 480 motor in it.

Measure from the leading edge to the trailng edge if you could. I will crunch a few numbers as soon as I get those and see what I can come up with for a power system if someone else does not beat me to it.:(
Also, if you can weigh the plane on a dietery scale that would be helpfull.

i think i know what you got, i have an old school kyosho zero with that monster of a 500 in it. I swaped mine with a himax brushless gearmotor Ha-2025-4200
hs 55 servos should be ok. for reciever I would use the electron 6 and go with a phenix 25 esc.........
I would go to www.troybuiltmodels.com (http://www.troybuiltmodels.com) and get mr paysons #the man is a electric junkie that knows his stuff... and he loves fielding phone calls.

First I would like to thank everybody for there help so far.
Anways plane wing leading to trailing is 7 and 5/8 inches by 48 inches long. Weight I am going with maybe 1 and a half pounds.

22-24oz will fly great on the Himax 2025-4200 brushless motor. Power it with a larger prop, maybe a 12x6 or 11x7 on 6:1 gearing, and you will be a happy camper.

Lipolys will be fine with that brushed motor, as long as you don't over-discharge them. Find an ESC that is lipoly sensitive, and try it out. If you have to go brushless, remember that you would need a new motor and a new ESC. A lot of people are flying can(brushed) motors on their planes, and they do just fine, though you wouldn't believe that from all the, "rip it out and go brushless" advice. I am not bashing brushless, I own a couple myself that fly great, but I also have some models with brushed motors that also fly great. All I'm trying to say is that you don't HAVE to go brushless to get it in the air.:D

What types of batteries are you guys running with the brushless motors?

What type or kind? We us Lipos. lithium polymers
brands I use are Poly Quest,Thunder power pro lite series and I Rate's.
For the most part we really like Thunder Power Pro lite there the best.
Oh all of ours are 3 cells mostly a few 2 cell packs.

There's a whole lotta info about beginning electric and we don't have the time or don't wish to spend the time getting all that info. I suggest you read as much as you can, get to the field and discuss what you think you know. Here's AMA's Model Aviation FAQ http://www.modelaircraft.org/mag/faq/answers/faq-q112.htm
