Just rediscovered this old link amongst my " browser's bookmarks" souvenirs. For those who have never seen what can be done with the humble Slow Stick, you are in for a treat.:)
For those who have seen it already, then you may still get a few laughs.:D

It was a major hoot! The video was shot at Chandler Bowl in Chandler Arizona about 2 years ago. The "Death Stick" is mine. It has since been renamed the "Zombie Stick" because it is back from the dead after a crash. It's still flown almost every weekend.
To this day I still hear "Joe you're crazy" because of that video.:D

Small world Joe. I have been watching that thing over and over again since I saved it to my hard drive and also to CD two years ago. The same I did with the turbine powered B-52's flight and crash.
It's funny to hear you guys making the "machine gun" sounds. Hilarious when they collide in mid air and no damage is done to the planes. I have a few other links to similar events, though I think yours is the best by far.
Since I have appointed myself defender of the humble Slow Stick, I felt it necessary to post that link again so those Slow Stickers who have not been able to enjoy it can do so now. I have also done it prove to all of its detractors that the Slow Stick is the most fun these humble models can provide with a small investment.
Of course, R/C e-snobs would not be caught dead flying these lowly models, they are beneath their dignity. Their loss, not ours. As Tw so eloquently and proudly puts it in his sig, we are proud members of an elite force, we are THE SLOW STICK MAFFIA.
Your Death Stick is something else. :D

Qban,
I hate and detest just about anything made of foam but I will always have a few Slow Sticks around. I either start or end the flying day with the Slow Stick. Every one I've had has been brushless. I've done twin prop and twin EDF versions. I have one now with a bomb drop on it. I'm thinking about setting up the twin again just for giggles. For the measly price absolutely nothing else comes close to the fun factor of the "lowly" Slow Stick.

I know a fellow (not in AZ though) who has added ailerons to his SS. He also made the wing nearly flat. Seemed to fly just fine. Nice rolls, very stable in flight.

Okay, you twisted my arm. How about a video too? This video was also shot by Kenny (Ripnburn) at the Chandler Bowl. It was powered by two brushless Astro Flight 10 turn 010's. The center prop is unpowered and just there for looks. VIDEO HERE (http://www.ripnburn.rchomepage.com/Videos/JoesTwinStick.mpg). I don't remember if there was ever any video shot of the EDF twin. It flew okay and sounded cool but was a waste of time on a draggy airframe like the Slow Stick. I don't think I flew it more than 5 or 6 times.
This is the same plane that evolved into the Death Stick and now the Zombie Stick and is still flying. It's the first one I bought back when the Slow Stick was originally released. I've had others that I've destroyed but somehow this one continues to survive.

I contacted the fellow Twmaster refers to on his post. With his permission, I am pasting the report he sent to the N.A.A. Flying Group about his modified Slow Stick and his DX6 Spread Spektrum radio:
On Dec 14, 2005, I purchased a Spektrum DSM DX6 Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) radio system from Hobby City.
By Fri. Dec 16, 2005, I had the system installed in a modified Slow Stick w/low dihedral and ailerons with individual servos.
After the 8 to 10am reception at Hobby City on Sat. Dec 17, Bert Matos and I went to Fulton to fly the new DX6/Slow Stick for the first time. After performing a range test, Bert put the plane into the air and trimmed it out. It flew very well, he tried out the flaperon feature and experimented with various flap settings and flap-to-elevator mixes.
The DX6 system is very capable with dual rates, exponential, and various mixing capabilities and it has 10 model memories.
I flew the plane and tried hard twice to do it in, but it survived a near death brush with a wooden snow line stake and a loop at less than 10 feet above the ground that broke only a prop.
The DX6 system operated flawlessly and I would definitely recommend it. It is the wave of the future in RC radio systems.
My two cents worth.
The modified Slow Stick performed flawlessly. Axial rolls were fabulous, though not pattern plane like. Inverted flight is a cinch, just as are inside and outside loops.
Though I tried hard to get it to, the Slow Stick refuses to spin. Landing it with flaps deployed is a hoot. Plane 125' up and no more than 75' away from landing spot. Deploy the "flaps" and it goes into a 45° descent angle at a very, very slow speed. It was kept in that stance until about 14" off the tarmac when it flared. Forward touch down roll was limited to about four or so inches.
The DX6 is a superb radio. The modified Slow Stick is a hoot to fly. :)

Sorry, for not getting back earlier. I'm not sure why, but tonight's the first time I've been able to log on.
I got the other video ( Twin slow stick) to run, but still cann't get the combat video to work.
Thanks. Don

Don,
I'm not sure what to tell you. Have you updated Windows Media Player to the latest version?
This is a pretty large file. If you're on dial up it will take a LONG time before it will play if you just click on the link. Try right clicking and "save as" to a folder. Let it download completely and give it a try. As I said, this is a pretty old video and shouldn't require anything special to view it.

First time I downloaded it back two years ago I did so on a dial up connection.
It took sometime for it to download, but I had no problems so doing on my trusty 2002 Gateway PC and playing it back using WMP version 9.
Matter of fact, that is the version on that PC currently and the video plays just as fine today as it did back then. :)

Don,
I have played that WMV on my older P2-450 running 98SE without a hitch as well.
BTW, DELL has some really good buys in their Refurbished Department. While some may frown on getting one of those, I do not.
I just saved over $600 on my latest DELL PC from that department. It would have cost me $1549 for the tower alone had I "designed" it from scratch then have them "built" it for me.
As it happens, the one I just got has more than what I what I really need hardware wise, and did so at considerable savings to my wallet.
Since I saved so much, I splurged and spent $99 on a two year on site service contract with them. Cheapskate that I am, that's splurging. :D

Joe,
I know I'm a little late at viewing your video but that is a really cool tri-motor. I'm usually hanging around the beginner threads. I can't get over how slow that plane can fly, even with 3 motors.

Bruce,
That is a REALLY old video. So old in fact that I believe that flight was made with 1100mah NiMH KAN cells! I just watched the video again and I can remember the flight. The plane was way overpowered and had amazing climbout. It did climb badly at high throttle on that flight but I later added a bunch of downthrust and it was a LOT more fun. Remember, the middle "motor" was just a gearbox and shaft with a freewheeling prop on it. No motor.

Joe,
I was wondering how you were controlling the speed of the middle motor.... :o I didn't realize it was just along for the ride..
Still, I really liked that video. Do you still have that plane?

This is probably the wrong thread in which to ask such a stupid question but I am new to RC and had never heard of combat flying before...looks really fun.
Is the objective to cut the ribbons off of the other planes with your prop?
Kind of like flag football but without the hassle of you know...moving? :D

Yep you got it my friend!
Cut the ribbons with the prop!
Some other airplanes are set up to send out an electric signal and if it hits another plane it disables the engine for a few seconds.
I like the ribbons better :)

Wow...that sounds like a LOT of fun
Can anyone recommend some links where I can find out more about this? I fly helis (crash...fly...its all the same right?) at the moment but have been flirting with the idea of a plane.
I realize this is kind of like running the Boston City Marathon before you can walk, but Ive never been one for slow and steady progress :)
I also saw a video in another thread of people hitting each others planes in an attempt to knock them out of the sky...did I interprete that video correctly? I am assuming the little foam planes must be incredibly cheap if people are willing to do that with them :)

wintland,
What you saw in the video started out as a cut the ribbon contest but soon progressed into an every man for himself attempt at blood and carnage. That's when it REALLY became fun! You wouldn't believe just how hard it is to hit another plane when you're actually trying. We only had a very few actual impacts though. To this day it's still the most fun I've had with an RC airplane! :D

If you post a new thread in the Combat Forum I'm sure people have a bunch of links.
This thread is pretty old and I don't think many people are still subsribed to it.
If you want a cheap easy to fly airplane check out the Hobby Zone Super Cub. I have one and its a great beginner airplane it takes a lickin too.
http://www.hobbyzone.com/rc_planes_hobbyzone_super_cub.htm
They make this thing called a "Combat Module", its an X-Port assesory, anyways you buy the plane, and buy the Combat Module plug it in the bottom of the plane and you can dogfight other people who have it.
When you get hit your engine stops! haha good times!
I would get it but I don't fly with anyone else that that has it;..
oh I started out with copters and switched to airplanes... :)

Heh, I definately saw the match degenerate into a "screw the ribbon I want his plane" match :)
This is the link I was talking about though
http://www.wattflyer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18202
No ribbons are present...looks like they are literally trying to knock each other out of the sky.
If other planes are anything like my wifes china cabinet I feel pretty confident I would be really good at this game ;)

kinda like a demolition derby with planes!!!
haha!
Now I know why they use flying wings! They don't break as easy!!
My Dad and I both have Blade CX2's and we have often thought about flying them into each other and seeing who can be the last one in the air.
Little to expensive though :D
