I saw this in action at EAA's "AirVenture".
It is incredible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FAA certification
X-Plane is also used in non-motion and full-motion flight simulators for flight training. Some of these implementations have been certified by the FAA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FAA) for authorized flight instruction such as Flight Level Aviation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flight_Level_Aviation) and Simtrain (http://www.simtrain.net/)

Yea but - its sold in the "video game" section of stores, and it simulates full scale, not RC planes, right?

Do you think its useful for learning/improving RC skills? Can it be setup with a regular RC transmitter as the controller? And what about the view - most airplane games I've played either have you looking out the cockpit, or viewing the plane from immediately behind it. Do they have a view where you look up from the ground at the plane? How well would that work since the aircraft are full-scale?

It is possible to kind of use X-plane as an RC simulator (I looked into it because I use Mac and there is no RC-sim for Mac) but it's not nearly as good as a real RC sim. It is by far the best real flying sim out there. The amazing thing is that (for the most part) it's written by one guy.

The graphics are sick though! Nice.

If you use the Control Tower View mode it will work as if it was an R/C simulator !!!!!

For only $60 you can't beat the price and quality.

Then you have the option of actually sitting in the cockpit and fly.
You can't do that with R/C simulators.

AnglerHi,
The saw Version 9 and the graphics were excellent (I'm very demanding).

I've never seen graphics like that before on ANYTHING Don! Maybe I just need to get out more:p>.

Best Simulator EVER ..... Fightertown near El Toro Marine Base in Mission Viejo California. I used to fly the full axis Tomcat in full flight gear and helmet. $120 per hour! Pilots could dogfight each other, shoot ground targets, do carrier landings, etc.
Man I miss that place!!!! It was cool that a civilian could mix it up with actual Marine fighter pilots.

realflight offers first person view and for 99.99 you can get fsone which isnt the best but for 100 bucks with a controller its not a bad deal at all. this product is a nice full scale flight sim but wont do much for rc

Not so! With RealFlight G4 (and I believe G3), you can choose the cockpit view.

HeliG,
Thanks for updating me on the cockpit view possibilities, I'm not familiar with those products. I spoke out of place, sorry 'bout that.

Angler-Hi Mike.
Here's a recommendation:
"I've been flying this simulator for five years. All the way back to version five. It just keeps getting better and better. You better have a "horse" of a computer with an awesome video card if you want to realize its potential. The community is very extensive and talented. More airplanes than you could ever fly. The price is $49.95 the last time I looked. If you're going to buy it, buy from http://x-plane.org/ (http://x-plane.org/)as they support the community. It's all based on physics and not a game."

I have been wondering about Flight Simulator possibilities and didn't know where to post it. I thought this might be a good spot. I have a PS3 and the thumb controllers are similar to a RC TX. Additionally, it is equipped with UBS ports. Has anyone heard if a RC Flight simulator that is compatible with the PS3?

BestBuy and Target both carry it. Pretty much anyplace that sells PC games should have it.

just reiterating, Realfight, Aeroflypro, Fsone, all have cockpit views.... I believe clearview, fms, and Phoenix, and reflex xtr do also but couldn't find it on their homepages....

Chase view is from behind the plane.... Cockpit is from inside the cockpit... pretty much all of the simulators have chase view, some or all have cockpit mode too....

Yea, but MS Flight Sim X has ATC with working radar and multiplayer support with built in voice communications. But let me tell you, join a session with a pro ATC and you better know proper radio procedures or prepare for a verbal lashing and boot from the session haha (Don't ask how I know this). Total blast at times though. :)

Oh yea, you need the deluxe version for ATC radar. You can also join a buddy in his plane and be co-pilot. Kinda fun co-piloting a 747, calling out reference speeds and handling ATC communications. Then dumping all the fuel and calling out a fuel emergency and watching your buddy try to glide a 747 back to base. At least that's how I co-pilot anyway. ;)

What's your favorite air combat sim? I want to get one again and can't decide between Il-2 Sturmovik or Falcon 4.0 Allied force.

Got any other ideas?

I've had both of those and both are really good, but I had way more fun on IL2, due to Falcon 4.0 being very labor intensive in the cockpit. IL2 gave me more "eye to eye" dog fights.

X-Plane used to come with at least one RC-sized plane in its stock stable... hope it still does, I flew that model around a bunch several years ago (using Tower View).

X-Plane takes prides in using real physics to model flight (rather than lookup tables) so there's at least a chance that the models would scale realistically down to RC-model sizes. After all it can model flight in the atmosphere of Mars, which must be pretty different (Reynolds-number-wise) from conventional flight.

As I recall, X-Plane lacks tutorials, excercises, or other learning aids... it's pretty much "here's the controls of the 747".

I just upgraded computers so I'm evaluating Flight Sims myself: X-Plane vs RealFlight. Big question in my mind is getting an RC radio hooked up to X-Plane for control input... anyone know anything about this?

I saw it at EAA's "AirVenture" this year, IT WAS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!

X-Plane is the world's most comprehensive, powerful flight simulator, and has the most realistic flight model available for personal computers.
Welcome to the world of props, jets, single- and multi-engine airplanes, as well as gliders, helicopters and VTOLs such as the V-22 Osprey and AV8-B Harrier.
X-Plane comes with subsonic and supersonic flight dynamics, sporting aircraft from the Bell 206 Jet-Ranger helicopter and Cessna 172 light plane to the supersonic SR-71 and Space Shuttle. X-Plane comes with about 40 aircraft spanning the aviation industry (and history), and several thousand more are freely downloadable from the internet. (See www.X-Plane.org as a good place to start).
X-Plane scenery is world-wide, with scenery for the entire planet Earth between -60 and +74 degrees lattiude. We also have MARS scenery! (thanks to the Mars Orbiting Laser Altimeter, which mapped that planet's elevation) You can land at any of over 18,000 airports, as well as test your mettle on aircraft carriers, helipads on building tops, frigates that pitch and roll in the waves, and oil rigs.
