CTD, it was a van that almost got me the other day, too. Fool was stopped and sitting at a stop sign letting a passenger out, then decided to pull out and turn left in front of me at the exact moment I was starting my left turn onto the street he was leaving. He HAD to have seen me or been legally blind. If I was going any faster, he would've taken my front end off before I could stop. Watch out for those vans, everybody, and keep riding like you're invisible.

Just put my bike up for sale :(

I am going to leave in on my driveway for 1 week, then move it to the lemon lot on base.

Sad day indeed, but it is the right thing to do with our first child on its way.

My wife told me NOT to sell the bike when she was pregnant with our daughter. I had plenty of "moments of responsibility" where I was tempted to do so, but the bike's still here. I plan on taking another advanced street skills rider course though...

...besides, living in New Jersey is way more hazardous than riding motorcycles anyway;).

Here is a quick picture of my Valk. I love my bike, it is smooth as butter on the open road and around town. She has had some custom work on her. The back fender is an Arlin Ness tail dragger and it now has 2 seats. I had to put the back seat on for the wife.

You don't know my wife. When we were 1st dating I wanted her to get a small bike so she could ride with me. Then I saw her riding my Moms 50cc scooter. That changed my mind real quick, she would kill herself. She has issues with getting dizzy. I don't think that is a good trait for a Motorcycle rider to have. She trips over her own feet sometimes. She is better off sitting behind me, LOL!!

My sister is 38 or so and she got her first motorcycle after she saw mine. I have not ridden with her yet but my brother says she's quite the animal on that thing. Honda Shadow 600 I believe. First year they made them. She's always been right in there with the boys though and took much punishment from two older brothers while growing up. She can or used to be able to drink most of my friends under the table too. You can tell she's the alpha figure in the house as well. The dogs won't listen to her husband or any of the kids but when she walks in they cower in the corner until she acknowledges them.

All that and she can cook too. Quite the catch if you can handle her I guess you'd say :D

Just washed my bike down and dried it with the leaf blower. Time to break out the polishing stuff.

That is one Awesome 05 Zuma scooter you got. I just got an 08 and wanting to do some external modifications, I'm finding lots of Performace upgrades, but not alot of cosmedic. Would you mind telling where (web site?) you got your Rear Fender Kit?

Thanks,

I've owned Yamaha's consistantly since before I had a DL. '72 DT250, '79 XT500, '85 FJ600 & '99 FJ1200.

Now, I have come full circle. Heres my '05 ZUMA

It sports many mods, motor work, gearing change and more. 50cc's gets me 55mph, and 85 MPG. I've never been hassled by the PD on this, but got constantly looked at with my FJ.. gee, I wonder why that is...

One time $92 re-title and permanent registration fee (just like 15 year Classic Plate) and NO MORE INSPECTION REQUIRED! So this payment to PA DOT is the last I have to make.

I also have every original part ..... including the tires ..... but I am riding on new tires. Bought a Lifetime HOG Membership when I bought the bike for $150 .... which also started in 1983. Great investment.

Man this thread got buried in the basement. I just decided to dredge it up because I was on another website where someone was chronicling adjusting the accelerator pump by using a wheel collar from tower hobbies to limit the arm travel......funny how I keep running into connections between models and motorcycles. By the way, I haven't flown in the past two weeks thanks to the rain and worse, the wind, but I have had the Suzuki out twice, once at night, 25°F and light snow for a 10 mile trip to see if I could stand it, and 50 miles in early AM daylight at 25°F and flurries to go take a picture! Good thing the GS is air-cooled, I had to stop twice and warm my gloved hands on the cooling fins. Watch out for ice and gravel, folks!

Still trying to figure out how to haul RC stuff on it.

I've done some minor mods to the FZ6 like crash bars and handlebar risers. Can't see the crash bars? They're balck just like the frame and look like part of the frame; they are right behind the exhaust pipes and wrap around the engine cover. Anyway I don't think this picture has the mods yet. Here's the silver version.

That's a recumbent bicycle peeking out around the boxes. This is while I was moving into my new house so there's stuff all over the place, still is... Between the bikes, tools, & RC stuff there's no room in the garage for a car.

Funny that this thread resurfaced. I"ve been doing some soul-searching over the past few months trying to determine what I REALLY wanted in a motorcycle, what level of performance and capability I need, and why I like riding motorcycles. I realized how much time I spend exploring little backroads and how much I missed the trail riding I did long ago, and all of a sudden it clicked. I just picked this up on Saturday... 250ccs of fuel injected, backwoods and highway capable, 70+ mpg goodness.

Congrats...of all of the bikes I have owned, I always enjoy my small d/s bikes the most. I have a bigger bike for bigger trips, but my DR-z 400 is an absolute trooper, and is more smiles per mile than most anything on the road.

I started riding in the 50's, First bike was a 1948 Harley, rode Harley's until the 70's, then rode the British bikes, Nortons, BSAs matchless Triumphs, etc, in the 80's I started riding the rice burners, Yahamas, Suzuki"s, Kawaski's, Honda's. In the mid-80's I bought a 1981 GoldWing Interstate and have been riding GoldWings ever since, 87 Aspencade, 95 SE, and our current ride a 03.

buzzbomber - It's looks like a Yahama too.

I started out with a 250cc (Kawasaki, my first & last, changed way too much lately) after many years of not riding but I wanted more so the Yahmaha FZ6 (600cc). The FZ6 is small enough for around town and good on medium trips; I would not want to do a thousand miler on it but a couple of hundred aren't bad with my bags.

Newer bikes are amazing - water cooled, fuel injected, & way too fast. I've been up to 142mph and still had more throttle. No I don't do FAST all the time, just sometimes on the interstate when there's no traffic.

Never had a dirt bike.

Ya.........it was tough. The thing is, riding here in FL isn't what it once was. There are more unlicensed and uninsurred drivers than legal ones. Cops no longer enforce simple traffic laws like running red lights or people distracted by cell phones. I walked away from riding on my own terms. Many I knew didn't have that choice :(

I've ridden Harleys all my life. A good friend of mine bought a Busa the first year they came out. I rode it and was hooked. I never fit well on other sportbikes and the riding position was uncomfortable at best. The Busa has a much more relaxed riding position due to it's longer wheelbase. There are also TONS of aftermarket accessories to taylor the bikes fit even better. I was able to ride mine for HOURS with no fatigue. With the Power Commander ignition system, the powerband was smooth and very predictable. Despite the rumors, a Busa will never do anything your right hand doesn't ask it to do :tc:

Anyone that says a Busa doesn't handle has never ridden one with slightly modded suspension and brakes. Mine would "back" into corners and drift out of them with complete control. The only downside was buying tires often :p>

Many drivers do not see us. I am not advocating excessive noise ..... but I had more close calls by cars pulling out in front of me on my old stock exhaust, quiet, 1987 750 NINJA than on any of my much louder Harleys. I always ride with my lights on for the same reason .... Visibility to others. Stripped bikes are refered to as Old School or Retro. They usually have a lot less chrome to polish!!

"Loud pipes save lives"

I just never tire of that old chestnut.

"Loud pipes lose rights" is more like it.
People don't like being startled. I can't count how many times I've been driving in my car and never heard some straight pipe fool until AFTER they blasted past me in the next lane at speed.

BE AWARE, and if you want to be noticed, like when you see a car about to turn in front of you, create lateral movement; that's what animals (ie, people) notice. Just weave a tiny teeny little bit so that your headlight beam changes direction a bit. Wearing some retro-reflective or hi-viz can't hurt either.

Just my 2¢ on the matter.

Hughes500Bob
05-12-2009, 11:04 PM
I've got some baffles in my pipes!!

I don't like being startled either. Funny thing that Harley blasting past you is doing 80 while the quiet bullet bike is doing 120. I've got 45 years of motorcycling under my belt and only two incidents (touch wood). A deer put me into a muddy ditch while on my 87 NINJA, and a dog charged me and hit the side of my 1966 twin jet 100 Yamaha. Otherwise I have avoided all those who tried to do me harm.
All my real aviation planes/helicopters (except the gliders) required wearing a headset to fly, especially the Hughes 500!:D I guess I am just partial to noisey transportation.

Now I fly a Ritewing at 120 mph and man does that 16/15/4 scream on 5000 mAh of 4S yellow jacket power! :Q

For those that might listen.........

The benefit of loud pipes is riding in traffic, side by side with cars......Not approaching an intersection from a 1/2 mile away. In traffic, side by side with cars, lights do very little, sound keeps people aware of you being there.

My feeing is loud pipes should have a proper corellation to the level of tune the bike has. VERY loud, short pipes on a stock motor makes no sense to me. Slightly louder than stock for rider safety is fine. If a bike has a motor that requires a very low backpressure exhaust system, fine. Crotchity senior citizens beware ;-)

buzzbomber
05-13-2009, 03:58 PM
"Slightly louder than stock" I have no problem with, honestly. It's "sets off car alarms and makes my daughter cover her ears and wince" noise level that bothers me. Sadly, that seems to be what many *ahem* "bikers" aspire to.

FWIW, I am 31 so I don't fit the crotchety senior category, but I've been around cars and bikes and airplanes all my life and have seen what trouble noise issues have caused for enthusiasts of all those machines. The prop noise from the modified Supercub and AT-6 that almost got our local airport closed(even though the airport dates to WWII and the houses to 1995), the famous dragstrip which now has to shut down by 8PM even when running their NHRA event(again, Raceway Park was there LONG before the houses), etc.

I just think that a motorcycle, or airplane, or car for that matter, can sound nice while still being 90 db or less. And the published reports I've read all point to the fact that if anyone notices a motorcycle(which is rare enough, I know) in traffic, they see movement or the headlight, not hear the bike. (long anecdote warning)This also falls in line with my experiences driving around in a dark colored GTi with header, no cat., and ridiculously loud exhaust years ago. My wife(girlfriend at the time) told me she could hear that car 4 blocks away from her house - she knew because she counted the times I stopped and accelerated again before the sound faded. People pulled out in front of me and cut me off in that car all the time even though I was pretty sure they could hear me. I put a set of Hella driving lights on the bumper to complete the rally look, and I can assure you I got cut off a LOT less when I drove around with those on all the time.

I know this is a contentious subject so I usually leave it alone, but recent developments make it more important. NYC proposed a ban on all aftermarket exhaust systems, requiring an EPA cert. stamp on the exhaust of any bike in the city 20 or less years old. So far, the law was tabled, but expect it to come back. Denver, CO proposed something similar. This is an issue that won't go away anytime soon.

If you want to see where the real dangers are in motorcycling, look up "MAIDS" and the Hurt Report. MAIDS 2.0 is being prepared right now.

One persons noise is anothers music to their ears. Some people LOVE the sound of loud V Twin rumbling down the road, others hate it. Some love the sound of a thunderous car stereo pumping rap loud enough to cause chest pain......others (like me) hate it. Things will never change, different strokes............:p>

Crotchity senior? Okay, if name-calling is the only way for you to carry on a discussion, go for it. I LOVE engines, large and small, everything from RR Avons to kart engines, and have done for all my life. I also have a bit of respect for my neighbours; is that part of "crotchity"? Gee, sorry...

I used to love standing on the start-finish line at the beginning of a standing-start race, and hear 40 cars all leave on the green flag: it was REALLY loud, every class from Cheetahs to Sprites, all flat to the mat. And that was the place for loud engines: the track. I am glad that legislation is finally coming down the pipe to ban loud pipes on the street. Bikers got away with this crap for decades, and I could never understand why...

OK, not my HD... but I have rented one for 3 weeks in August. My summer holiday will be spent cruising from Chicago to LA. Yes; R66 of course. And then I have to ride a HD. Electra Glide was my choice. Hope to visit at least 9 states this time.
Look forward to see the desert, Grand Canyon, also from helicopter, spend some money in Vegas and take a bath in the Pacific Ocean before I return back to Norway...
(Do not look forward to the american food...)
But I guess we have to ride some miles on interstate too. Anyhow, won`t be a rush. Short mileage each day, 300 - 500 kilometers :tc: Just a bit afraid of the temperature during daytime at the last 1/2 of the trip.

agree with you here buzzbomber.
car or motorbikes, i HATE those that is so loud they make my ears bleed.
and i also got the impression that "bikers" is worse here.
plastic rockets is certainly louder with so called "tuned exhaust" or slip on, or whatever they call it. but they dont make my eardrums hurt.
but walking in the city, having a harley with no exhaust to speak of, gun it and the sound echoes of the tall buildings is AWFUL.
i absolutely hate it.
and the best part is: the same bikers tells me all the time "oh, japanese plastic rocketeer, stop show off driving 200 km/h, its so childish to just show off".
WHAT!? driving along with 200 decibels, is that any better? isnt that showing off?
hd should be outlawed . *****

people with genuine interest for cruiser type of motorbikes can buy a yamaha virago or something like that. looks the same, but its just 10 times better technically, and cheaper too. and... behold! an engine that actually runs smooth! never ever seen in a harley, EVER!

Wow!! That was HARSH!!! ::o
I'm glad you're not the Supreme Ruler of the World

The Sportbike VS Harley rider battle or peeing contest is almost always carried out by noobs and less serious riders. Many of the guys I ride with own and ride both. Many times I've ridden sportbikes with the the Harley crowd and Harleys on sportbike rides when my sportbike was down. On sportbike rides, you always need someone to bring up the rear and keep the slower riders on course...........No problem, a perfect way to have fun with a Harley on a crotchrocket ride. Sportbikes are usually accepted with the cruisers if you ride at their pace. There's always someone with a performance cruiser so it's fun to push the pace a bit with them if they are game. Most people respect the rider more so than the bike. If not, the problem is theirs.

My last Hayabusa had a full titanium exhaust, matched to the minor engine and ignition mods I was running. Even around redline, it wasn't nearly as loud as a V Twin with open pipes. The sportbikes with an annoying note are usually the 600's, a 1300 has a much more pleasant growl :D On the highway, I actually would have prefered to have a bit more sound coming from it :) Was it fast.......YES. Would it startle LOUD V Twin riders as I passed them......YES. Have I been startled on my Harley by them........YES!! What comes around, goes around :p> That's what happens when you ride motorcycles.

I also spent many happy hours on my buddy's Anglian Greeves, my Honda 90, my other buddy's 250 Harley, etc. It is as if I have no opinion at all because I'm old. A majority of them have Hyabusa's with neon lights and riding suits that match thier buddies, or ride stock 883 Sportsters with no mods other than exhaust and ape hangers...

no fl, i got nothing to show, because im a poor student a i ride a '85 kawasaki kz 650 d4. it got some signs of a hard life (including my dad, driving it through the norwegian winter, with some inevitable crashes).
and the little money i got, i spent on tuning the engine rather than patching a dented tank or other cosmetic issues.
the reason: the engine is rock solid, but the electrics not so, and the cosmetics is just a big job. so the plan is to wear it down until it wont run anymore, and then put the newly tuned engine into a gocart som something, and have a really great time ;)

so, i guess you get the idea. its nothing to take a picture of, and brag about.

unfortunately, you wouldnt. with the holes in the roads and sharp corners we got on out roads here, you wouldnt have a nice time at all with a hd.
and i guess thats the reason that no cruisers here buy hd either, exept for hells angels.
i can understand that the situation is different, in a country where people drive around with bikes without any suspension on their rear wheel.

Everyone has their own opinions. I just skip over the ignorant ones, so I hadn't thought much of it as I just expect others will do the same (though that doesn't seem to be the case most times). It's an online forum where other's opinions don't matter for beans as far as your own well-being and happiness goes. My brother along with many of our friends and families are currently in the Middle East getting shot at every day. It always puts stuff in perspective for me, so I just pay it no mind and look through the pictures here. My problems and grievances just seem so miniscule in comparison, so perhaps I get a bit too complacent or laid back when reading such things.

Posting all of this as a forum reader and a biker myself, not as any sort of official statement on behalf of the staff here.

And to continue with the actual topic of this thread, here are a couple of pictures of my bike and my wife's. Mine is a 2003 ZX-6R 636cc, which I love and have never found to have an annoying note. ;) My wife's is a 2006 ZX-6R 363cc. So the first and last of the 636's in the garage. I loved the sound of mine with the high-mount Micron until my wife put the Two Bros. dual exhaust on hers (and yes, she actually took her bike apart herself and installed it ... I was impressed) ... that is a NICE throaty sound for a 600-class bike!

My wife gave me my bike in May of 2007 as a late wedding present. She always swore she'd never get on a bike, then she surprised me with it. We took the MSF course together because she said if she WAS going to ride as a passenger with me, she wanted to know how to actually drive the bike in the event something ever happened and she needed to. Halfway through the first day of the riding portion of the class I turned and asked her how she liked it. She was grinning from ear to ear and said, "Oh, we have GOT to me one of these." :D

I scored a near perfect score on my test ... just slightly decelerated during the 130-degree turn on the last portion. 3 points from perfect. They waited to tell my score until after they had announced pretty much everyone else's. Not because it was so close to perfect, but because they also wanted to announce Sam's score, who had only one mistake, which was slightly decelerating in that same turn, but to a lesser degree. So was only 1 point away from perfect. Which, as the instructors pointed out to everyone, ought to mean that she got to drive the bike when we got home and I should have to ride shotgun. :D It was funny, but it was also great of them because it boosted her "Hey, I really CAN do this!" attitude even more and just made her feel great about everything. Plus, she gets to razz me for the rest of our lives. :D

Summer of 2008 rolled around, and I found the exact bike on Craigslist I was hoping to buy her for her early birthday present as a surprise. I couldn't believe it, as the guy who had it was only 2 miles from my house. I had searched every other city in America first before searching my own town since I'd never seen that particular model being ridden by anyone around here, and low and behold, there it is right in my own backyard. :D

Took out the money from the bank, was two hours away from getting off work to go get it and surprise her with, and she calls to tell me she just got fired from her job of 7 years which accounted for about 2/3rds of our income at the time. Doh! What a day. So she got home and I took her over to a "job site I needed to work on with a water heater problem," cherishing the moment when we walked into the guy's garage and she realized the bike sitting in it was her dream bike ... you could see the wheels turning in her head wondering if this was an amazing surprise or the weirdest coincidence ever ... and said "I know we're going to be tighter on money, so I didn't want to do this without asking you first given today's events. But that bike right there ... just say you want it, and it's yours."

Man, you didn't have to tell her twice!

And that is the rather verbose story of how my wife, who has been terrified of motorcycles all her life, ended up setting events in motion that turned her into a wonderful and safe rider and landed not one but TWO motorcycles in her garage. :D

I have never had a Harley, but this summer I spent my holiday on an ElectraGlide! OK bike. Great trip. (Of course I had to rent a Harley for crossing USA...)
Got my ElectraGlide in Chicago, put in a CD and cranked it up. At the end I did deliver the ElectraGlide in Los Angeles.

In between I spent some days in Chicago before the ride began. I was lucky, there was a fly-show so I did see a lot of F16`s and other planes doing LOW aerobatics over NavyPier :)
Of course a lot of things happened in Chicago, like a visit to Sears/Willis tower, blues, beer and a bath in Lake Michigan.

Illinois and Missouri was not too exciting, but we got two thunderstorms. I love thunderstorms when the temperature is good! But at Interstate we got problems, had to stop at last and got help from Highway Patrol to reach a safe place to stop until the rain stopped. Did pass two Springfields, wonder how many Springfields there are in US? Scary at Devils Elbow.

In Kansas I got some pictures of Bill, Lightning McQueens friend (Cars).

When we reached Texas at last the exciting (for me) landscape did open up. And the heat began to be too high for me... Big beefs and more.

In Arizona we left the Route and did head for a ranch far from other people. Here we did get the best meal I have ever had! And trying to sleep in the desert in a sleeping bag was not possible. Layed all night looking at all the stars :$ The road in to Sun City and Acoma was great, and Acoma itself was worth a visit!
Driving through Painted Desert and Petrified Forest was amasing. The big meteor-crater was impressing. Then we stopped in Williams, having planned to use Williams as startpoint for the "best" part of the holiday...

Drove to the airport north of Williams and did take a helicopter-ride across Grand Canyon. I really was excited to see the Canyon, and I have to admit it was the best experience during the whole holiday! Can`t describe it, just a must to see! :$
After the heliride we drove along the Canyon to the east before we turned south (Flagstaff) and west back to Williams. Had to sit still one day to try to understand what I had seen...

Then we went to Seligman, and at last we found a winding road to Oatman.
At HooverDam the security check was strict. Propably it won`t be this strict when the new bridge is done?
Headed for Las Vegas. Spent some days there. Strange and crazy city... But the BigShot at the top of Stratosphere Hotel made me scream like a girl! Twice!

In Los Angeles the ElectraGlide was returned. It worked perfect as long as I was the "owner".
LA; Walk of Fame, visiting Universal Studios, did see the big fires, took a bath in the Pacific and a lot more before the long flight back to Norway, one stop in Paris.

The ElectraGlide was OK, but won`t be my next bike I think... Too expensive in Norway! Will keep my Dragstar one more year.

Already planning a new ride in US within two years. Either from New York down to the blues-belt and back to Florida. Or maybe a ride around the big Lakes. Or somewhere else. But will hire a Harley next time too :p>

I was told americans are nice people, and this was confirmed! Polite, kind and inviting people :) And far less aggressive in the traffic than people in Europe.

I propably felt in love with Harley Rocker C too.

That looks like a stock Harley. You need to ride one with at least a stage one mod done to it. Stock Harleys are very quiet. There is nothing like the sound of the Vtwin in the city and going down the highway. That will get you hooked for sure. Thanks for the story about your ride. Looks like you had a lot of fun. That's what riding is all about. Daytona is for sure the ride to do.

All The Best.

Thank you, and thanks for the link. No, I am not a member of Adventure Rider, but I like to write. Maybe I should become a member and share my experience?

Have to admit I did drink some Bud`s. Didn`t know which beer was good "over there", but Bud wasn`t my favourite. Love dark beer.
Both Daytona and Sturgis are well known, and I would like to experience both! But time will tell if I get time/priority ;) And a lot of women!

:Q There aren't any fantastic American Beers. Maybe Coors... but if you put a lime in my beer there's going to be trouble. That's a Jimmy Buffet thing.. ;)

We drink your beers here! Guiness, Fosters, ever tried Guiness Double Bok beer? Put on your seatbelt... it will knock you off your chair!

The population of bikers at Sturgis... which is what I meant to say...is steadily growing each year. But Daytona is the place to be.

I raced professional motocross for years.. and I loved the motocross races at Daytona International Speedway. There must be some pictures around here somewhere. I'll post some if I can find them.

Glad to hear you enjoyed your stay here!
