Steve Nolan, The self-portrait shot of you standing on the overlook is absolutely fabulous! What a great picture! The only question is, "where did you land the plane?"

There are some great shots in this thread. Makes me want to get my butt in gear and put an AP ship together. I rigged up a camera mount that sits in the front battery bay of my Soarstar and that works but it's got CG issues. I purchased a SlowStik with the idea of making that a camera plane but I"ve found that the SS doesn't like wind at all. I plan on taking aerial pics at the beach, read that "windy" beach, so I'm rethinking my plans. Right now I'm either going to spring for a Magpie AP or I'm going to fabricate an AP fuselage out of foam and carbon fiber and use a spare Soarstar wing that I have. I know the Soarstar can handle the wind.

Steve Nolan, The self-portrait shot of you standing on the overlook is absolutely fabulous! What a great picture! The only question is, "where did you land the plane?"

Thanks. I've flown there a couple of times, and usually just dump it in the sage brush along the foot path. I've tried getting up the courage to hand catch it on the overlook, but I get dizzy watching the plane come in, and this irrational, overwhelming feeling I'm going to fall off the edge kind of messes me up for catching. :)

Steve,
Those two photos are incredible. I notice the SS wing in one but the other seems to have been taken at about a 45 degree angle. Did you bank the plane or did you have the camera mounted differently?

Steve Nolan (eBird)
08-02-2006, 03:58 AM
Those photos were actually taken in different places in the canyon, and about a year apart.
Second photo was with an Optio S4 mounted to aim just below wing, so I was banking as I aimed the camera at me.

Cam mount was my "pendulum" design that kept the cam at horizon level during modest up and down pitch.

Here a photo:

Ribcracker

Ribcracker - make sure you have a limited swing design of some sort, and use a plastic bushing tightened just so to prevent wild swinging around. Since getting this mount tweaked just right, my horizons have gotten very level...

Steve-I made a pendulum mount for my FFF but it rubbed on the body (and hung up) which is not smooth so when I get back from vacation I'm going to put a hard facing over the foam so it can swing freely. I hope with the fit I've got now it won't swing too wildly but may need to dampen it out some how.

Here's my submission, this is my most often used flying field, the local middle school soccer field along the Applegate River in beautiful, downtown Murphy Oregon. The little white spot in front of the arrow is yours truly, standing in the shade of the tree. This was about 7:30 a.m.,hense the long shadows.
This was taken with a Nikon Coolpix L4 camera rubberbanded to a Hobby Lobby Miss Stick Senior. There are trees on three sides of the field and I have placed quite a few of my planes in them in the past, but am doing better lately. They never got damaged very much landing in the trees, but usually got beat up pretty bad when I knocked them out. Oh well, I do enjoy building them!

Hi Bob, There really is no one set way to do this. It depends on the plane, camera, transmitter and receiver as to what way you do it.
For the most part just Shoo Goo a servo on top of the camera so the arm hits the shutter button. Just plug the servo into any spare channel and adjust travel to trip the shutter.
If you can hang on a few weeks there will be a how to sticky with pics at the top of this forum that should handle most of your questions.

Swiping a servo arm across the shutter button is the easiest way, using the landing gear retract switch.

Never was thankful enough for my vision (20/10 both eyes) until I hit 45 and thought I was going blind. After a visit to my eye Doc (also an RC nut) who laughed and told me I was down to 20/15 because I'm not a kid anymore. He also told me the clouding caused by UV exposure is a bit more than normal for my age (no shocker after all that surfing, welding, RC with naked eyes ect...) but that if I am VERY careful about future exposure I may not have major problems. $150.00 for a top quality pair of shades is dirt cheap for full UV protection. I would rather have a vasectomy than eye surgery for lens replacement. :D Ira

Looks very cold. Do you sometimes fly with gloves? I bring them ,put them on, but before I takeoff I take them off because it just does not feel right. So, my fingers freeze. I guess I chicken out right before take off and take off the gloves because I'm afraid I'll crash my plane. If I cant feel the sticks it feels very awkward. Hope that makes sense.

We are at 2000' in the north coastal range of CA and get about 3 - 6 snow storm a year. It is rare for the road to be closed (4 mi into town) and even rarer for the snow to stick around for more than a couple of days.

Heck, it was a balmy 53 today so I rolled my Suzuki out of the garage and went for a ride.

Back on subject, I am still messing around with a striped "Point N Shoot" cam-corder, but lately the wind was too high to fly my light, E-powered 'camera plane'.

Here's a couple from today lifted from a FCOv2 video. MPX twister supplied the AP plateform:).

That camera angle is pretty cool. Reminds me of flying a plane on a video game.

also,
mswan, looks like you must be doing some mountain top flying.

I was flying from the NCAR mesa in Boulder, Colorado. NCAR, the National Center for Atmospheric Research, is on the south side of town and juts up against the dramatic Flatirons. Apparently people slope soar off the mesa when the winds are out of the south. The hill that I was flying from is very steep and the drop off sudden. Within five seconds of tossing my e-starter off the ledge it had about three hundred or four hundred feet of altitude. I've only flown there once... I need to go back. The only down side is the lack of suitable terrain for landing. It is very rocky and not amenable to belly landings. The motor was overpropped with a big 10x7 E-flite slow flyer - nice for zipping fearlessly up and down the hill, but this little detail conspired with the low density altitude created by the 15 degree weather to suck my 3s 1350 mah dry in a little over four minutes (vs. the normal 10). This I wasn't planning on, and as the speed controller went from soft to hard cutoff in a matter of seconds, I found myself a hundred feet in altitude below me (down the hill) and sans juice. I was forced to land uphill and amidst the boulders. There was absolute no pilot skill involved in finding a four or five foot clearing in the rocks, just sheer luck. My fav part of the video are the puzzled deer looking up at my plane... and the landing.

http://www.stage6.com/user/lightblue/video/1890054/Thanksgiving-Day-flight-at-NCAR

you'll have to download the divx plugin from the site... it'll take just a second.

I took the black and white photo from the opposite side of the mesa as I was leaving (from the ground). It was an amazingly beautiful day. Lots of great topography around here for taking dramatic videos. One of these days I'm going to fly straight into it.

Yup. I couldn't get mswan over there, so I had to do some other variation on my last name. It just struck me, though, that "blueswan" might sound a bit pensive... kind of like "lightless eagle." I enjoyed your "Aussie paradise" pics. The weather is finally starting to warm here, but those photos made me longingly day dream of sitting on a far away beach.

We went to visit my parents in Monterey, VA. I took my Slow Stick AP. The winds were fierce, and even with a gyro the plane was bounced all over. None the less we got a few good shots.

We are up on the hill between the houses. It's hard to see from the photo but we are about 50 feet above the street. From this location we are actually looking down on the green roof of my parents house.

I like your parents house, is the small building to the left guest quarters?

It used to be servants quarters in the old days (the house is over 100 years old). It is fitted out as a guest house, but the main house is so big, that it almost never gets used.

Maybe it's time to "upgrade" to a key chain cam.

As to my camera, here's another one just like it. (http://cgi.ebay.com/100-30FPS-SPY-Hidden-Car-Key-Micro-Camera-DVR-720-480-/140416178664?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Camcorders_Professional_Video_Cameras&hash=item20b174d9e8)

Your Radian looking at your face...:D

Yup, Must still be one of those prohibition area's...LOL

before leaving, I asked how much a permit was, and they said $25, and that it took 6 weeks to get one issued... I think I'd die of thirst waiting for it...LOL

Strange thing was... There was at least 3 bars in that little city... I couldn't imagine them makeing any money... there was only 1 customer in each of them... (yea I thought they might let the permit thing slide in at least one of them but no...)

at least I did eventually find a good bar to have a drink at though... but not in that city...

This is my flying field, home, and plane-eating trees all in one shot. I'm at the right side.

Plane is a Cargo Twin, camera is a Pentax Optio M20.

Yep! But the veggie garden keeps me so busy I don't have time for ham radio. :concern: The antennas do tend to keep my flying on the straight and narrow, though. Stray to one side of the glide path and I'm in antennas. The other side I'm in the trees. Not a lot of room for errors (but I make them anyway).

I may smell expired, but that's because I've been out mowing the yard.:( Your "this site" link didn't work. What site said I'm expired? I renewed my ham license in 2009, so I should be good until 2019.

Excellent! I have quite a few of those photos of myself.

A giant RC blimp sounds really fun, as well.

I guess you don't have to worry too much about parking it in a tree.
I'll bet it's nice to have nothing but sky to fly in. The Great Plains?
Weaving between the trees can make you prematurely gray. I'm proof!
Thanks for the great shots. I love it!

Plenty of trees to worry about!
Best of both worlds-about 20 miles east of the Black Hills, South Dakota.

Yeah, you almost clipped that one. Isn't it funny how a plane can sniff out the few trees that are in the area? Uncanny!

It's been dropping into the 30s overnight and up around 60° during the day lately - cool enough that I've been turning on the heated grips on my bike most mornings. It feels like winter isn't far off. :(
