View Full Version : A light pole is NOT your friend!

It all started out as a beautiful day to fly. Calm winds and sunshine. Then it happened. After having a great flight with his BH Cap 232 a friend of mine was lined up for final when suddenly and without warning a light pole appeared out of nowhere and struck down this once beautiful model. Instead of birds chirping the air was filled with streams of cuss words. Then came the task of collecting the debris. All together 4 planes were returned to their hangars after the walk of shame that day.

I don't get it. Did the debris fall onto the other planes parked beneath the pole?

newjak

Man, I should have thought of that:D
At first the story was going to be about one crash, but to not totally trash my friend Idealhobbies I threw in my damage for the day. So to set things straight, he crashed the Cap232 and I did the 3 others all by myself. Or maybe I can blame the sunspots too.

I got totally owned by one years ago. The Slow Stick did however fly again!

I made a few templates for the fuselage. The weekend is difficult to get in any repair work. When Monday rolls around things should start moving.

Actually 8 planes made it home safely. Some might view that as a bad day. Any day I get to fly is a good day for me:)

What happened:
My Cap 232, totally me. My depth perseption is beginning to get not so great. To my eyes, I was well in front of the pole when it went "bong".

Newjaks:
His Cessna: The front gear appeared to break loose on take off which lead to his damage trying to get it stopped. It was at lift off speed and had to be aborted. The nose ended up dragging in gravel.
Eratix - Gear broke off on landing.
F22 - One of the rudder's broke loose durring flight. Caused it to flip over on it's back suddenly. Newjak actually got it flipped back over before it came down.

FAA Reports: Idealhobbies caused the crash of the 232 due to poor vision and is grounded pending examination by eye doctor. The 3 aircraft the were downed whiile under control of Newjak were due to mechanical issues that were beyond the control of said pilot. Newjak is reinstated to full flight duties.

Anyone know of a good Priest that will perform an exorcism of Newjaks hanger? He's got gremlins and needs to have them removed.

Dang Stupid Pole got me today :D I maidened my Scratch built fun jet, on the first try, too much down thrust, the jet nosed in, very little damage, corrected the thrust, gave it a little up thrust, and it flew, but the CG was off, a little tail heavy, I had my hands full, but got it into a nice landing glide, left to right, Forgot about the Stupid poles that are on the right side of the field and thump, wing hit the pole, if fell down and snaped the fuse in half, and the motor burned up, nice smoke :( Oh well, it did fly :D new 2408-21 motor on order and some more props, oh yea, i broke a prop too :Q thats my second time hitting a pole, it will fly again, just need to glue the fuse back together, and patch a small section in the wing, and it will be ready for battle again ;-) Take care, Chellie

thats too funny, the only thing I've ever hit a pole with was the slowest thing I've ever owned... A slowstick....LOL

thats ok, cause I teased the pole the next day for quite awhile pulling immalmans infront of it... with a great planes slinger at 80mph... I guess it couldn't reach out far enough to bite me...LOL

Newjak? Care to comment?:D

Oh, Newjak's my friend. I have to take a shot on occasion. He takes it well. I swear, he has Gremlins. He's always repairing something and saddly, it's RARELY anything that he did wrong while flying. He's great on the sticks and consistantly impresses (or scares) the heck out of me, but his luck is terrible. Esc's smoking for no reason that we can find, motors (quality ones, not cheap stuff) going out unexpectantly, BEC resets with no findable cause, Radio interference from a construction truck once that caused his plane to "land" in a tree, Melting battery terminals on a maiden of a brand new plane causing a "landing" in a light pole, landing gear falling off during take off.... and it goes on and on.

Gremlins!

Of course I agree with Chellie:) Way back in Da Daze when I only had one plane it REALLY sucked to have to go home after one little mishap. Now whenever I go to the field I take at least 4 planes so that I can "get right back in there" after a crash. There have been times when it was just better to pack it up and go home.

Chellie,

Sorry to hear about your crash. I've been following your build thread and was quite impressed. Darn sunspots!

Its not to bad, about 1 hrs work, and it will be back in the air :D they fly better after a mishap anyway :Q its flies, it was fast, the Dumb Pilot forgot about the poles on the right side of the field :D and i just about had it all trimed and balanced out, one more adjustment should have done it  :Q, I flew my Scratch built Katana too, that is a fun plane, one of our club members Jay, is a Awesome pilot, I let him fly it, he loved it, I thought I was going to have to Fight him to get my Plane Back ;-) He is Good, he had the Katana hovering in one place for a long time, wish i could do that, I built the Katana for a 3 cell, and some how I picked up one of my 4 cells and put it in the Plane  it has a ESC that will take a 4 cell, and I took off, Dang, it took off in 2 feet, went straight up, That was impressive, I backed off the throttle and flew it around, my 3 cell and 4 cell Rhino Lipos look alike, I only realizes that it was a 4 cell, when my charger showed a 4 cell lipo being Charged :silly: Silly Me, I will have to write 3 and 4 cell on my lipos now, real Big, being a tad over 40, I need reading glasses, Ok you found me out, I am 54 :Q Take care, Chellie

Great prices on those planes, but This plane be repaired with under 10 bucks worth of material and some time spent on those windy/rainy/cold days:)

Ya'll gotta remember that even if the poles 6" around your 40" wingspan make it near 8 FEET wide!! think of it as if you were fly'in a golf ball at thrity MPH around a park'in-lot with a dozen 8"wide barrers planted all over where you try'in to fly!! don't look to good for the golf ball, ChilieBub:::: I got the spit for 49$, she's got a 2409-12, 30 ampESC , ( near two to one trust ratio):ws: You get a build manual thats the size of a credit card with a couple of pixs and the CG local, she flys great and I'll get another el-cheap'o warbird from them soon!:D

Brand new to this hobby...I've been lurking here for a bit and reading. Read about people hitting poles, and smugly thought, "well, not like those poles move; can't be too hard to miss 'em."

Well...clipped the wing on my son's plane trying to fly by a pole. I swear I had plenty of room!! No real damage other than being humbled a bit, and a bit o' tape she flew again.

Glad to see I'm in not alone :tc:

Welcome aboard!! It happens to ALOT of people. You concentrate on the plane so much that you forget exactly how close you are to some obstacles. And yes, the poles/trees/fence posts/powerlines and sometimes the ground all move when you least expect it:D

Profound, you are a wise man steve.

Not a lightpole but a pole none the less.
My new 3D model, brittle fragile Flat Out Cap, found a lone no trespassing sign today, complete write off except for the tailfeathers. Before you go into the irony of hitting a No Trespassing sign, let me say I fly off a closed road that is fair game, although my plane does trespass in their airspace I guess. I would never have had to trespass if they didn't put that stupid sign right where my plane was flying, making me trespass to pick up the pieces.:(

Been flying for over twenty years haven't had a good crash in most of those. Kind of fun being a newb again (3D). Kind of like revisiting first love.

A field goal post led to the loss of my Tower Hobbies Vista glider. I was lined up on final when a gust if wind came across the field. The Vista did a 90 degree turn and covered about 30 yards in a couple of seconds. The right wing scored a perfect field goal. Sheared off right wing at the fuselage. The rest of the glider continued for another 100 feet crashing into the security fence.

It was totaled. I picked up the mess and left for home. Ordered a replacement the next day. Have had several successful flights.

I had a similar experience with a goal post. I entered the story into Multiplex Elapor Story contest, and got a free Blizzard tee shirt because I was one of the first 50 contestants :) Now I want the Blizzard. Recently I reposted it on my blog. (http://modelairplanesrcflight.blogspot.com/2009/03/my-multiplex-elapor-story-easy-glider.html) You have to becareful what dares you take from people when your flying ;) WHOOPS! Lucky for me, elapor really lives up to its tough reputation!

Not a pole but a line, spectacular video, but I can't figure out how to link it properly. Those that have more experience linking videos could you go here in the test forum and give it a shot? I'd appreciate knowing what I am doing wrong.

Here is a link to the video, albeit in a round about way, go to the second post on in this thread on my local forum, and click on the "Jonny's A10 click here" link. Well worth the effort cool video, hilarious crash.

I HATE light poles!

I Was camping and feeling the need to go fly so I took my foamy to the parking lot next to the campground. Checked for power lines and other obstructions and deemed it was a PERFECT spot to fly with lots of room. So I toss her in the air and next thing I know.......WHACK!!!! right into the nearest light pole!!!!

At least it was just a foamy!

I was so ashamed the day I brushed a big hi tension power line out by the house with my slow stick. I really was having a good time, untill my wife said, "honey you got pretty close to that power line last time" Well next pass and I actually heard the wing scrape the wire.......wife had the proper comments that are not suitable for posting.
