Hi Everyone :ws: I am going to Maiden my Scratch built DR1 Fokker tomorrow, Wish me luck, this is one of my early scratch builds, i thought it might be to heavy to fly at 24.6 oz AUW, but it has 288 SQ inches of wing area, correction 296 SQ Inches so that gives me 2.05 SQ ft of wing, and a 12.3 correction (12 ) oz per SQ FT Wing Load, So hopefully it will fly :D it has a 1800KV micro motor, 800mah 3 cell lipo, and a 30 amp esc, with a 7x5 APC prop, it seems to have a 1 to 1 power ratio, because it will hover in my loose hand at WOT, I did some taxi test earlier, but the tail would not come off the ground, so i made the elevator bigger, and the landing gear is a little to far forwards, so i may have to hand launch it, live and learn ;-) it will be interesting to see if this plane flies, the top wing is 30" middle is 24 and lower is 20, Take care, Chellie

Hi Everyone :ws: I added some clear plastic to the rudder to make the rudder bigger, to try to prevent YAW at 100 MPH :D this plane has a prop pitch speed of 95 MPH :Q maybe it will get into the 100 MPH Club :p> I just hope it flies ;-) Take care, Chellie

Hi Everyone :ws: i crashed it :D This was one of my very first E Builds, and its been sitting in my hobby room for 2 1/2 years gathering dust, i knew it was a little on the heavy side, but i said, What The Heck, lets see if it will fly, As There are no Wall Flowers in my Fleet, My Planes Must Earn their keeps or its Off to the round file with them :Q so i knew it was going to be 50/50 with this plane, if it was going to fly or not, so its to the round file with it  :D :D :D now i have more room for other planes :p> see, i am not afraid to show my successes along with my Failures ;) take care, Chellie

I Made the plane with some Plastic coated foam from BP Hobbies, I used bass wood as spars, TO Heavy, and the foam was 6MM To Heavy, So I Learned from this plane what not to do, i did not fly it for a long time, because i knew it was on the heavy side, But all my planes must Earn their keeps or its to the round file with them :D and this one did not earn its keep  ::o

From your build it looked like the wings were a bit much for a foamie. I'm building a 36" foam DR.1 (when the wife (#3) lets me have the craft table back). I am doing single sheet undercambered with non-functional (for now) ailerons on all three wings. Weight will be about whatever a 36x36 sheet of 3mm depron weighs (about one pound ?).

Yes, you are right :ws: the foam was to thick and build was way to heavy for a small plane, I Learned from this Plane :D a 1 lb plane will be perfect, Good luck to you on your build, Take care, Chellie

Chellie, what went wrong? It seems it did fly based the pic. The DR1 is notorious for crashing even by the best pilots (real and RC). I am assuming from the wing loading that it had to come in pretty fast to land. The ailerons were in constant use in the full size bird. One of its advantages was that it was so close to being unstable it was extremely agile. Maybe you could consider giving it another chance before recycling. (I love Fokkers and almost cried when I read that)

Looking good... well,.... looked good.
I just maidened my 18" scratchbuilt depron DR1 this past Friday. Rudder and elevator only, with a little dihedral in the wings. Flying weight of about 133grams. It 'was' about 100grams, but I had to add nose weight to balance it. It flew pretty good, but as soon as a small gust of wind hit, it got caught in a tree about 30' up. I had to pull out my old tree climbing skills and managed to save it. I need to get some pics.

Hello all; new guy here. Don't feel alone Chellie, I crashed my EP sailplane today, (not near as pretty as your plane); DLD must be going around; you know: Dysfuntional Landing Disease, lol. Actually I had a mechanical failure, (my fault actually), so I guess misery loves company. Race ya to the workbench!!

The plane was too heavy, even with full ailerons and rudder, it would not correct from a torque roll, the plane IMHO was too small too, making it very unstable and roll sensitive, thats ok, i learned from this plane and will use what I learned on a bigger DR1 :D Take care, Chellie

Hi Sonny :ws: and Welcome to Wattflyers, the DR1 was one of my first e power scratch built planes, being a nitro pilot for many years, i made it as i would a nitro plane, nice and strong, good for nitro, bad for e Power :D I have since learned how to make foam strong and lite, i made that plane about 2 1/2 years ago, and i just wanted to see if it would fly, knowing it was on the heavy side, so its no great loss, i knew there was a 50/50 chance of it flying, I have a 72" P51D E Power mustang to finish up, and after that, i may very well, make another DR1 but bigger and much much lighter :D Take care and have fun, Chellie

Chellie, are you sure you put a motor in it? :D

That would be so funny if it wasn't so pretty before the crash.

You know what they say, anything will fly with enough power!

Really sorry about the mishap.

More power :D next one will have a 2 to 1 power ratio ::o :p>

Thank you, it just was just to darn heavy, it did not want to get out of its own way :D I learned my lesson with that plane, but it taught me alot, thats what really matters, after my mustang, i will build another one, with a 50" W/S and lite with gops of power  Take care everyone, Chellie

Be sure to also balance every triplane just a tad nose heavy. If they are tail heavy at all they will have terrible flying manners!! It might also help to take a couple of quick steps before releasing the plane. That should get a little more air flowing over the wings at takeoff. If the tripe isn't moving fast enough the middle wing will kinda cancel out the rudder and elevator. I too am sorry about your plane. I'm sure the bigger one will fly though!! Steve

Great Advice Steve, Thank you :ws: I will be making a bigger one that will ROTG it will have a almost 2 to 1 power ratio, so it will scoot real good :D I learned a lot from that plane, and have built into my other planes what I have learned , Take care and have fun, Chellie
