What do you guys think of the DD tail upgrade?

I've got one of THESE (http://www.iconmicrodesigns.com/) on order. I've given up on the motor on the tail idea. The belt drive works great on the T-Rex so it should make the Blade into a nice flyer at last. This kit looks to be a real sweet setup! I'll let ya know when it gets here. (It is on backorder though).

I didnt know they made that but I did the numbers and it adds up to $244.71 for the complete conversion.

Yeah...a bit steeper than the $26 for the DD conversion! Personally, I'm going to continue beating on my relatively stock Blade and save my $ for the TREX or MX400 upgrade.
I'm in the process of putting the DD on after my tail motor got too tired to keep up.
I probably won't be flying it until this weekend, unless I get the time tomorrow...

its a cool conversion, the numbers don't jive. At that price I would just go buy a kit and migrate parts over.

The full conversion kit at about $244 for me personally doesnt work out. Don't get me wrong I'd love to do it if I could just blow that much money just to say I have a really wicked bcp ;) ... but I cant really dump that much $$ into the BCP. For that, personally, I would just buy a TREX and build it up little by little... Thats just my opinion though... I think its really cool though...

I think I'm missing something here. I paid $70.00 for the kit. I have all the other items needed but even going brushless I can't see $240.00 even using all the good stuff like I am. You don't HAVE to go brushless. You would need a gyro and a tail servo though. That's a GOOD thing.

Its all the other parts that gets us. If it was say $100 for frame with all the tail rotor and main shaft parts it would be worth while. But when we start adding it all up the numbers say go with a full kit. Its just one of those nickel and dime things. Do I have to pay out for a blade with existing stuff or spend for a rex. Cost is pretty close.

IMHO it's not worth it.
- GWS tail fin assembly is extremely weak and breaks easily
- If using a TP 900 lipo the tail boom needs 1 inch cut off it to even come close to balancing properly. It still required a little over .5 ounces of clay to balance. Completely negated the weight drop I use the 900 lipo for. I would only fly the DD tail if you use the TP-1320 lipo where the loss of flight time won't be as drastic and it will balance without added clay.
- Using the TP 900 flight times went from 15 minutes to under 10
- GWS tail motor quality control is bad. I went through 3 motors on mine. Only one was good. You know if you get a good one if it runs cool. I had one that ran cool, so cool the heat sink is not needed but unfortunatly it was killed in a crash. My next 2 ran extremely hot and burned out in less than 5 flights each.
- Once I moved away from just hovering the heli the usefulness of the upgrade dropped.
- The setup used to hold the prop on the motor is very poorly designed as well. I had to loctite it to the shaft to keep it on.
Just not worth it for me. To many negatives. I've gone back to the stock tail and have no problems at all. Tail holds just fine even thru acrobatics, my flight times are back over 15 minutes on the tp-900, it balances without any added weight or tail boom chopping, and I'm on my second tail motor that now has over 50 flights on it.

Well since the tail motor is the cause of the demise of my BCP i would say better than factory equipment. As for my BCP RIP:(

Phil.
in search of a great heli.

Only upgrade I have done is lipo and motor, I will leave it to someone else to post facts about a dd tail. I personally don't think its worth the investment. Jimmi
