View Full Version : GWS Formosa back from the grave! (pics)

My Formosa went in hard earlier this year, and I saved all the pieces. I pulled it out and rebuilt it. The front end was pretty much destroyed, so I glued the wing to the pieced together fuselage. This required the tail servos be mounted externally on the sides as original servo bay glued shut. I then grafted on a new solid foam nose. Weight increased a bit, so I used a bigger motor (Turnigy 3530-1100) a 2200 3 cell lipo. The weight also moved back, so I lengthened the nose to balance it. Weight increase was 5oz from pre-crash, now is a portly 29oz AUW. The thing still flies pretty well, and with a 8X8 prop it goes fast enough to be fun.

Nice job Larry, I think I would of sent that one to the recycle bin after salvaging the electronics.

I just love hearing the groans from my flying buds when they see a previously written off ship back on the flight line. I think they might drive a stake through this one. This poor little Formosa is on its third life now, I had strained it through a tree right after I built it and it was pronounced dead then too........ I was going to repaint it, but I kinda like that battle scarred look, like one of those old bull walruses you see in National Geographic.

There are times when ugly is it's own cool thing ( I've got a old Ford P/U that is running proof). Don't give in like I did to the guys at the flight line. I caved in and retired a Scorpio Albatross D-V that was my very first R/C plane. Wish I had not, when it was airborne it looked and flew great. It was only horrific on the runway.:Q

Man, that looks like a lot of work, but it turned out nice. How long did it take to rebuild it?

Sorry the pictures were so small. I guess I did it wrong. So I re-did them as attachments but then couldn't find the actual crash pictures. Oh, well.
Larry, I prolly put 15-20 hours into the re-build (just guessing), but it's something that I really enjoy.
Believe me...I toss them when it's hopeless, but it's rarely hopeless. That Funtana did eventually depart this mortal coil.
The plans on my table aren't related. I had been working on a Cap 232 when the Funtana went in so I put the Cap on hold. Funny... the Cap got rebuilt a few times, too. Hmmmm...do I have any planes that haven't been rebuilt?
