The second Annual "Old Timers Vintage and Nostalgia" Meet for AMA District 9 was held August 26 + 27, 2006 at the Arvada Associated Airpark, Golden, Colorado. In addition to the fuel O/Ter events, this year saw the first "Electric-Only" climb + Glide event. Electrics were also allowed in the Pattern events but none were entered.
There were 4 models entered in the Electric Old Timers Event and motor runs were set at 30 seconds. Max flight time was 5 minutes and five rounds were flown. Models entered were a twice-sized Sparky, with AXI 2800 series motor, my 5/8th scale Playboy with Himax 2208 outrunner, A Twin Lizzie and an Anderson Pylon with PJS 1200 outrunner. All the electrics used LiPoly batteries. CD Travis McGinnis also had a twice-sized Sparky with AXI power but did not fly in the event.
The weather was cool, windy and rainy on Saturday, with a few breaks of "dry" spells. 2 rounds of both fuel and electric "Climb + Glide" were flown between the raindrops, times were in the 2 minute range, with only one "max" recorded, I managed to find a thermal after a particularly heavy cloudburst. Jerry T made consistant 3 minute flights with the Sparky.
Sunday was clear and sunny with temps in the low 80's. Several make-up rounds of classes 2 and 3 "Pattern" were flown first and in Class 2 Herb V won with a DeBolt Champ, second place went to another Champ flown by Maurie K. In Class 3 Jim E's Quick Fly II recorded the highest scores. Bob D's Aeromaster bipe was right behind him and an Astro Hog flown by Herb V took third place.
By 11:00 we resumed the Electric "Climb + Glide" rounds, Jerry's Sparky and my little Playboy Sr. (Pylon version) held on the the top spots, Jerry recorded the second max of the meet. It came down to the last round, but Jerry had some very bad luck; His AXI started making a grinding noise right after take-off and quit entirely within a few seconds. He still had radio control and managed a short glide and safe landing. My luck wasn't much better; While waiting for a take-off, my model was blown over by a strong wind gust and cartwheeled down the concrete runway. The wing rest was sheared off at the pylon and the rudder broke loose from the stab. I was allowed time to repair the model so a quick CA and accelerator fix was undertaken, with lots of helping hands to hold everything in alignment. It all looked straight and there was no time for a trim flight, so I got a timer, crossed my fingers and wound it up. ROG was perfect, straight climb, right into a booming thermal! By 3 minutes I had to bail out as the model was getting hard to see. I spun, looped and dove but it still took 8 minutes to reel it in. The smallest model at the meet (33" w.s.) recorded the top overall time, and the top 3 electric total times nearly doubled any of the fuel total times. Some of the fuel models were a full-sized Playboy Sr. (pylon), Hayseed, Dallaire Sportster, So Long, Lanzo Bomber and a Buzzard Bombshell. The Hayseed took the top spot in fuel with a Lanzo second and Playboy third. Fuel class motor runs were adjusted to the engine type, per S.A.M. rules.
Thanks to Travis, all the volunteers and Arvada Associated for hosting the meet, it was great!
See you next year!
