I have been slowly buying some electronics for my next Heli, so far I have a Spartan Quark Gyro and a Castle Creations Phoenix Ice 75A ESC. I also have a spare JR DS3400G for the tail laying around but I may go a different route on that.

I've been flying the crap out of my CopterX 450 and Trex 250 but I now want something a little bit larger.

I'm thinking of going with either a Gaui 425 or a TRex 500, leaning a bit more towards the Gaui. Has anyone out there flown both and can compare? Or does anyone have other suggestions?

The 600 is budgeted for next year. Possibly an Raptor E550. But for right now I only have a budget for a 500.

The shipping kills you on the larger heli's when you order from China though. It isn't too bad on the 450 sized and smaller though.

Have you seen the TRex500 clones that XHeli.com sells?

It looks like I was mistaken on the price of shipping on the Gaui 550 from Hobby City. I was looking at the EMS shipping rate instead of the Air Parcel. The Air Parcel shipping is actually quite reasonable at $41.74. I may consider the 550.

I talked to my wife and promised to do the housework for a month, and she ok'd the 550.

I went ahead and ordered it so I will impatiently await its arrival.

I finally ended up with a used Gaui 550 with a carbon frame. The canopy is in a little rough shape but for the price I got it for I think it's fine. It has 525mm blades on it and the mid sized boom. I've ordered the long boom conversion set and a set of 550mm blades. (the wood blades that it came with are not matched very well so since I had to get another set of blades I thought I may as well go for the longer set)

I was able to get out and fly today and was extremely happy with it. There was about 10mph winds and it didn't even phase it. After the first 3 minutes of flight this very quickly ended up as my favorite helicopter in my small fleet.

Here are a few photos.

I really like the fwapping sound the blades make too. You don't get that sport flying with the 450's that much.

Ok, a couple of tweaks made to my Gaui. I increased the head speed to

N 1600
st1 1800
st2 2000

I also bought the longer boom kit and installed 550mm Radix carbon blades on it. The weather is supposed to rain this weekend so I may have to wait until the week after to test the new updates out.

I haven't updated my experiences with the Gaui for a while.

I have put about 50-75 flights on it and it's still my favorite heli in my fleet.

I just installed a Wazzer Easy Mesh Motor Mounting system on it and that makes getting the pinion mesh a lot easier.

Had I started out with a larger heli like this I doubt if I would have had near as many crashes as I have with my 450 sized heli. This is so stable. I've only had a few hard landings from practicing auto's and the worst that has happened was broken landing gear.

I still haven't gotten inverted yet, I need more sim time, which I haven't been doing much of lately.

Now I need to get a couple more battery packs, I only have two and that isn't nearly enough.

I am about to start building my EXI 500 and I was wondering how much more stable it would be than either my EXI250 or EXI450. Sounds like I'm really gonna enjoy this larger heli!

It will be much more stable.

The first time I hovered my 550 the first thought that came to my head was that I wish I would have had enough money to start out with a bigger heli because they are so much easier to fly.

You should really enjoy it.

Get the Align 550. It is a good machine and the right size. I know I am going to get struck by lightening for saying that, afterall I fly nothing but Raptor both electric and nitro. Getting to hard to get Raptor parts in the Dallas metroplex these days. Seems Align parts can be gotten everywhere.

The 500 is the perfect size. I just sold my trex 700e and my 600 esp. The only heli i fly anymore is my flybarless 500...

I've added a Furion 6 to my fleet since my first post and it is by far my favorite heli. I like it even better than my Gaui 550. I wonder why more companies don't make the direct drive systems like the Furion 6?
