I just picked up one of these from ebay for 99¢ to use with my GPS

and I got to wondering, does anyone know if would it work with one of the cheap $10 serial interface cables for my TX?

It certainly won't work with the original style FMS serial interfaces.
It probably will work with PIC serial interfaces, the ones that are o.k. with Win XP.
Unfortunately "cheap $10" isn't quite enough technical detail to work out which type you mean ;).

One like they have here http://www.gwsexpert.com/product_info.php?cPath=21_152&products_id=997
After installing the software it's recognized as a serial to USB bridge if that helps.

I would say it is quite possible. But you would probably need to get a serial cable that works with your operating system and transmitter.

Since that specifically says it works with Win XP it is the later type and will probably be o.k.
BTW if anyone's interested, the problem is that the original interfaces used the serial port in a completely non-standard way which later operating systems like Win2000/XP blocked.

I tried one of those with the FMS cable we sell on flygws.eu and it works. It just gives yuor serial-port-less-laptop a serial port, that's all there is to it.

I ended up having to download PPJoy (http://drn.digitalriver.com/product.php%5Bid%5D75176%5BSiteID%5Dsoftwaregeek)t o get mine to work.
First run "Configure Joysticks"
Click Add, at the parallel port dropdown select "Virtual Joystick" then click "Done"
Go into your Hardware Monitor in Control panel, click on "Ports" and see what the com port you're using is (my case it's COM2).
Open PPJoyCom and set the COM port to the port you're using (it will always default to 1).
Open FMS and select "Joystick Interface" then click on "Mapping/Calibration to set it up.
