Hello Folks,
As I promised Brutal E that I am going to create a new thread for our folks to show off their sweet birds so here we go. I started with mine with a condition that you will show of yours :) So folks get your heli pictures on in :)

On the left it is my yellow MX400/TRex450 Hybrid (take a closer look you'll see strobe lights and Lopo alarm light on it) and next to it is my Blade CP (check out the blades on my Blade CP - they are mod Trex 315 Fiber blade). (edited to add discription)

Hi UflyIfx,
Welcome to Wattflyer! That is a very nice Blade you have. You have fixed it up nicely. I like the yellow tail fins, and the landing gear looks a lot better than stock. Does the landing gear come with alluminum mounts? It looks like it in the picture..
We are glad to have you here. Please visit often :)

Hey thanks Jay, yeah, that setup came with aluminum skids, the mounts are just plastic, I painted them with flat Black Krylon. I slapped on my new Plasti-Blades from JCShobbies.com this morning, but haven't had a chance to try them out yet.

Hey Paul,
Looks a lot like the helicopter in post #1 :) cept I went under a power line, got a glitch and dorked it right in front of wifes jeep lol. Long story short.. That's why it has an old Trex canopy I had lying around. If it fits fly it! The silver looks great!
Take care,
Jay

lol I appologise, I meant post #3. Is the Dynam 6ch rx working good in the heli? It is amazing how fast a helicopter drops when they glitch, only to come back to life right as it hits lol

I was skeptical of them, but I tested them in my 22E and was impressed! Then I tested them in DUAL brushless ESC setups.... they don't glitch :)

Tomcat, I have had numerous home versions of the blade at various weights and various motors and up to a pound. Try the replacement motor with the 8 tooth pinion. I use 900 mah and 1320 lipos no prob. Currently separates with eflite E3-3700kv. Still looking for a tail to tame it.

jermo
01-11-2007, 08:38 PM
bah your CX looks fine, Figure it took me almost 2 weeks to paint mine and $5 per can paint  ..I'm not very good but one tip is to not worry how it looks when painting. Paint always looks a bit different when it dries. Take your time and paint several light coats rather than one or two big coats. Allow each coat to dry overnight before applying the next coat and always wipe the canopy down before painting with a solvent that won't affect teh paint or materials. I use rubbing alc. on a paper towel.

For now, it only has 2 flights on it, haven't had a chance to play around with ratios yet. Too cold out here.

Thanks for the Kudos,

Its a simple V1 shogun inside a Gaui Airwolf fuselage. The ones sold by EF on hobbypeople and made by Gaui. I believe they have an MD500, MD500E and 222/Airwolf. The retracts were custom made by me and are CF construct.

Electrics.....

JGF DH400
CC Phoenix 25
GY240
JR UL610 RX
JR 241's on cyclic
HS65 on the tail
Deans Micro antenna

To attach thumbnail links, clicked the advanced button and look for "manage Attachments" button. I think you can figure it out from there.

Here are the retracts for the 222....construction was simple using rect. CF rod, CA and nylon thread/CA for the stressed joints. The nose gear is retractable off the shelf bit I had laying around. weight is 48 grams.

AUW for the 222 is 685 grams. It has no problem with sport flying. Stall turns and big loops are basically effortless. The fuselage tracks well in ff and in reality would fly better without a HH gyro.

The before looks like my CP.
I bought the same tail support kit.
How did you attach the tail support to the boom?
The provided clamp is too big. I tried several kinds of
shims, but they were all too loose to hold the support in
place solidly.

Well I hope this works, I have never up loaded photos. I was waiting for a new tail boom for my blade cp. So I was messing around with some transfers for a pinebox durby car. I found them at hobby lobby. They worked out great for my canopy. When my tail boom arrived I put some green fuel tubing over it. I hope that the tubing might help against boom strikes in the future. Now that I know the transfers work I will order a new canopy and design a better one.

Thanks.
The Apache was 31 lb when it was a Gasser. Indyhelis helped me change it to Elect. and it comes in at 27 ready to Fly. The flight time is a full 10 mins just hovering. You can fly longer when you Fly around.

Here's the latest addition to my Heli Hangar. This is the Twister Chinook made in the U.K. They aren't available in the USA yet. It does rolling takeoffs, and has an auto hover feature that lets you let go of the sticks and it automatically goes into a hover. It's a great looking whirly bird.... but alas, not one of the four motors will run. So, it's never been flown. I'm still waiting for a fix... at $300+ it makes a nice paperweight though.

Wow...very nice. I just got the same fuse myself 2 days ago. I'm going to put MX400pro mechanics with upgraded electronics. I've started to rework the main head mechanics because I want to install the tail rotor on the left side of the fuse and I'll need the head to rotate counter-clockwise.

That Raptor E550 is cool! It doesn't need rotor blades!!! ;) j/k...

How much trouble did you have making the transition from coaxial to single rotor heli's? I flew single rotor... then got into coaxial for some reason.
Now, I find it very hard to go back to the single rotor heli. I spend most of my time trimming things.

My mistake! When I looked at the small heli in your picture I thought it was a coaxial. Believe me, I know about taking the blades off. I used to fly a Hughes 300 that was four feet long. I had to take it to the field in a van.
I sold it because I wanted to go electric... and for some reason, I went for a coaxial first. Now, I've lost my touch with a single rotor heli. :(

Well I have had a CX2 for a long time and always liked the odd way that helicopters fly :) I just didn't think I'd ever be able to do 3D or fly a CP helicopter at all, but I practiced a whole lot on Realflight, got a CP Pro and bashed around with that for a while - now I'm back to basics with the "RADD" method and I'm enjoying it. It just takes a while to wrap your brain around the helicopter thing. And I've heard heli pilots say things like "how can you fly those planes, they always keep moving forward!" - It's just a new challenge for me and that's a major reason for being in the hobby in the first place - to challenge the mind. If it ever becomes easy... well let's hope it never comes to that :)

If anyone is interested, what I did there was to scan the TRex decal sheet into my computer, replace some of the colors with Paint Shop Pro, and then print it on an Avery clear label sheet. I can send the template to anyone who wants it, just PM me.

I used to fly helicopters many years ago .... before there were gyros. Those suckers were big and I crashed a lot. I flew fixed wing for many years and then, I spotted a guy flying a multi-rotor heli and I bought one.
I haven't flown fixed wing since! You're right.... it's the challenge that draws me to it also. And it won't get easier! Every time I think I've mastered it.... I crash and come back to reality. Nice job on the canopy cover. Well, just thought I'd say hello. Been a while since I've seen you.

Best,

Hey that's cool! Where did you get the custom canopy? It's a Blade 400, right?

I just picked up one to practice with before I risk my beloved Trex on tricky moves...

SkunkyMagoo
07-06-2008, 02:07 AM
Yes, that is actually an Align fiberglass canopy :)

I have...

Align canopy
Align 35A ESC
450SE v2 aluminum tail grips/steel hub/450 blades
325mm align pro wood mains
Align 3K carbon stabs

I have an aluminum tail case and all aluminum head coming. The stock tail hub is pretty weak aluminum even a minor strike can send it off into the trash bin. Swap for the v2 tail and you wont have that problem, the rex tail is also more responsive and has a faster piro rate.

You will note that the e-flite parts are very weak, most of us have swapped out for align or similar parts.

If you want a bullet proof blade, go CNC tail/head, MG servos on cyclic, and KEEP WOOD MAINS. Carbon mains will bend the crap out of a CNC head.

Anywho have fun with your blade, once they are setup correctly they are a blast and a very good platform to practice 3D on. It is my basher until my 500CF is complete.

I love my blade though hehe. We call em B-Rex's.

Balil

Are you talking about the stationary type mounting? Like two metal rods, with like a dimple on the end? I am not sure what the real rex uses, but copterx, ninja 450 and the like are setup like that.

I REALLY WANT SOME OF THOSE!

Let me know if you have a part number.

something i thought about doing was buying the canopy mounts from microheli for the t-rex and screwing them into the stock holes on the b-400. but im not goin to rebuild my 400 until i am able to NOT crash my cp+

Actually, I would highly recommend not trying too hard with the CP+ - if you can understand how the controls work well enough to hover a little bit, and you have plenty of sim time, I would say go for the Trex or the Blade 400. The bigger helis with faster head speed will be easier to fly. Alternative would be to hook up the CP+ to a real radio so you can program a higher throttle curve, or fly it in idle-up. I was really unhappy with the CP Pro - it sucks horribly. I put a little bit of work into it to try to improve it, but no matter what you do, it will never fly as good as a Trex 450 - unless you upgrade it to the point where it is basically a mini-Trex, which can be done apparently, but I don't think it's worth the money when you can just get a decent heli, probably for less.

I will look into the upgrade parts for the 400, and replace them if I break stuff. I was able to get the PnP version a bit early, because my LHS guy really is dying to know how it flies, and he was happy to sell me one for the PnP price and he kept the radio.

I have only upgraded what has shown to be weak for me. I am not like those j-holes who say the blade sucks and you have to upgrade everything on it right when you get it...that is simply NOT the case. If you have setup the swash correctly, everything is tracking good, and you dont pile into the ground mid piro flip then you have nothing to even upgrade.

I have a JR servo set I havent even put in yet, the stockers are fine for now.

I just did some minor upgrades like blades and tail to make it perform better, none of it is a necessity.

You may find you dont need to do anything to it, and you may find a few things you would like upgraded.

But the pro wood blades fly much cleaner than the stockers, that would be my first thing to change.

jasmine2501
07-06-2008, 03:11 AM
I don't plan to upgrade anything just for the sake of doing it. I did have to balance the blades, which were pretty far off, and I had to put some subtrim to get the geometry right, but I'm not going to bother to buy anything for it until it breaks. It's not my only helicopter and I have plenty of planes, so it's not like a crash is going to ruin my day or something. I'll get parts as I need them. On the Trex though, I have replacement parts for most of the head in my flight box already. I enjoy flying it very much :)

Here's my bird.

It's an Align MD500E fuselage with Heli-Max MX400Pro mechanics.
Hanging under the heli is a wireless colour video camera (in the red pod) and spotlight. The camera pod and spotlight are controlled by separate servos. The heli has full lighting. Nav lights in the skids, belly and top mounted quad-flash strobes and a landing light under the nose.

The mechanics have been upgraded to an all aluminum head. Since this isn't a 3D machine I chose to keep the mechanical CCPM and not upgrade the mechanics to the 120-swash.

(These pictures were taken before the landing skid lights were installed)

Next upgrade: Compass-lock system to keep the camera and light "locked on target".

Thanks Theecoop,

I couldn't get the images to show as thumbnails, so that's why the full size images are showing.

The camera is a small wireless 9V one. It's similar to ones you can get through online hobby sites but I've had it for about 5 years sitting in a box. I tore it down to the basic components and made the camera pod from white ping-pong balls which I then painted to match the heli. The camera, regulator and TX are all contained within the pod. Trying to stuff everything into a ping-pong ball is quite the chore! :tc: The only wires that exit the pod are the power leads and the (short) antenna wire, which are both routed up into the heli.

Good thinking, I never thought of that!

Unfortunately the MX400Pro isn't quite up to the task of hauling around the big fuselage, camera, batteries etc. So flight times are kept a bit too short. I plan to swap the mechanics for a T-Rex 450 so I can use longer blades (the MX400Pro has a shorter tail boom so I can't use the long blades).

Minus the blades it was $70. And since everything is packed in pairs it was really $35 and I have extras.

Blades are subjective because you can use $20 china or $80 italian.

Maybe not 25 deg....but these shafts are no joke....pretty good bend.

Wow lol, now thats a crash. I almost had one last night, i was such in a rush to fly my heli with the last 20 minutes of sunlight left i forgot to attach 2 outta 3 of my ball links to my swash plate from the servos lol. Only the elevator was attached, I guess the spinning of the blades leveled it out cause it lifted in the air about 7 feet, suddently had a surge of power i dont know, then sparks flews and my battery came falling to the ground seperate, but at the same time my heli came down lol. Something struck my balancer cord from my battery and the wires touched causing alot of sparks. I checked it over and my autorotation and main gear are rubbing , my swashplat was only 1/3 on and my batteries cables were stripped and open.

So i got mad thinking i fried my 95$ battery, Flight Power EVO 25C 2500 MAH and hucked it on the ground, it sparked again. Then i was like , well maybe it's ok, so i put electrical tape on the ends and tried charging it. It seemed ok and charged like i think it should have. I checked today and no puffing yet, but i don't have a cord to balance it anymore. Can i buy one someehwere u guys know?

Laughing off our crashes and moving on is part of the hobby but I see a few life-threatening situations in that story. I would be pretty freaked out.

"GunnyGlow" told me this and I live by it - he found a broken linkage on his trex-600 in the pre-flight check - I had just watched him fly it earlier that day and nothing was wrong and it was a perfect landing.

Your heli exploded at 7 feet of altitude  were you wearing a helmet?

You gotta make sure you check over your whole heli before every flight. Make sure all the wires are tied down with zip ties and away from moving parts. Since you are using tri-flow before each flight, while you do that, check the ball links from the servos up to the head, always in the same order - tail too. Wiggle things around and check for any odd play, binding, or rubbing in the head or swash plate and make sure the flybar and blades move smoothly. Use the velcro strap on the battery so it can't separate from the helicopter and its wires can not reach any moving parts (wires down and front). Use the throttle hold switch, by habit, when plugging in. Check to be sure the gyro initialized correctly and spool it up slowly. Watch for any odd vibrations and listen for any changes in the sound - if you notice anything just cut it and don't fly till you figure out what it is.

You can get new balancing plugs - you should take the battery to Colpar and see if they can help you. It might not be safe to use.

Yah that experience made me realize i really need to be more careful and i was quite angry at myself for doing it. Helis are jsut so fun to fly though and with the sun goin down quicker now as winter approaches, so does my flighttime.

I was looking for an electric larger than a 325 size machine. I didn't feel like spending what it takes for a Mikado, or an Ion X, etc. decided I could do a lot better than align at a 600. I had a nitro Pantera 50 and I liked the heli a lot, so I tossed in a motor. Conversion went really well and while the photos show some massive 6Ah batteries, I can get over 10 minutes on them. With some smaller 5Ah cells, it ended up the same weight at the nitro machine with fuel.

My Blade 400 with a Venom Noze canopy. Yes, a TREX 450 canopy fits the Blade 400; it's a little tighter in width but it works. The Noze canopies come without holes or grommets and come in blue, orange, & green; you can get them on eBay, Tower Hobbies, or direct from Venom. I also went with the E-flite blue tail to match the canopy.

There's the little mCx here as well. It needs a new flybar.

I added brite yellow trim sheet strips to the tail boom to aid visibility.

Here's how to make the mCx faster, which is why I need a new flybar. It starts getting hard to turn when it get going real fast or the battery is getting low especially in left turns.

I finished this conversion last week. I love the it way it flies and awesome power. I loaded it up with some FPV gear. I got it buzzing around my garage. Really simple set up and flies a lot better then stock and all I can say is it's bada$$. Got a few flights in and I'm under the impression that this will be a good FPV heli for learning, indoor FPV flights, outdoor close range FPV flights and I think for me it will allow me to fly over my backyard RC track without having to have everyone clear the area like they do when my 450 or 600 spools up .

My Brushless CX is weighing in at 350 grams wet (RTF). Here's the Set-up

1 1.3ghz 300mw Hobbywireless FPV system
1 Custom Crash9 6160T6 .50 aluminum frame with landing skids/tail boom
2 Castle Creation Thunderbird 9
1 900 mah 3s lipo for heli power. 7-9 minute flights so far.
1 400 mah 3s lipo for seperate video power. May remove and run off Main batt to save weight.
2 C-10 Brushless outrunners from Strong RC. Thanks Don.
1 Blade CX complete frame, servos, innner/outer main shafts, etc..
1 Spektrum 6100 RX, TX programed for plane
1 E-flite heading hold gyro
1 Vasman extended inner shaft

I also removed the FPV gear and used a 3s 2100 lipo for a 20+ min flight. 298 grams RTF.

nice line up!

between the trex500 and msh, which do you prefer?

Thanks for the compliment. I am pretty happy with my choices in helis so far.:D

As for the 500 vs. the Protos. I have only flown the 500 twice since building the Protos. My Protos weighs in at 270g lighter than my 500. Because of this, it is much quicker and seems to have a lot more pop in the collective. I also have a nicer gyro on the Protos so that also helps. I am running a Spartan DS760 on the Protos and a Gy401 on the 500. If I don't start flying the 500 more it will likely go up for sale in the future to help fund a .90 sized nitro machine.

My favorite right now is my 8S powered 600. I am running a Scorpion HK-4025 890kv motor with a CC HV-85 on 8S 25C 3700mah Outrage packs. This thing peaks at 2900watts! It is pretty much unboggable at 2150rpm.

I just got some Radix blades for my 600 so I can see how they compare to the VBlades that I am currently using. I also got a set of the Youngblood Super Stubz padddles. Unfortunately, the weather has been bad out here in California for the last two weeks and I have not had a chance to test them out yet.

My favorite right now is my 8S powered 600. I am running a Scorpion HK-4025 890kv motor with a CC HV-85 on 8S 25C 3700mah Outrage packs. This thing peaks at 2900watts! It is pretty much unboggable at 2150rpm.

Sounds very similar to my ePantera.

(roughly) 2900W/30V = 97 Amps how often do you hit that with your HV85? I've peaked mine at 107Amps, no smoke. However, I had a gear mesh issue and yesterdays flight peaked at about 67A. I run in the 35-45 amp range however I'm also running around 1800 RPM on the main.

Do you have any logs/vids? I'd love to see the info on an 8S 600E!

My Trex got a new Gyro this year. Ministeve gave me a sweet deal on a 401 he had, thanks again Steve!! It has been to windy too get a good tunning session in with the new gyro but better days are ahead. I painted up a new [align-clear] canopy for her too. It is black on the inside, I used some of the factory stickers and Orange covering. My camera batts are dead so I had to use my mini vodeo camera to get a picture. It's a 1 sec. video, the batteries are dead in the mini video camera too, AUGH!!!! I can't find even 1 charged AA battery in this house!!! You can just hit pause to view it as a photo.

I don't have any recent logs. I am not obsessed with data logging and tend to only run my Eagletree when testing a new setup or to diagnose a problem. I have hit 100A+ many time with my old 6S/Neu 1515/2.5D setup. I am running my 8S setup using the Castle 2.0 Firmware's RPM Governor. Normal is set at 1800, idle 1 is 2150, and idle 2 is 2250. I typically never use normal or idle 2. I don't have any videos since I am just your average sport/ wannabe 3D pilot. I do need to run the logger and see what the system is pulling during some tick/tocks. I have family obligations this weekend so I won't be doing any flying. I will take the laptop out to the field next weekend and try to remember to get data from a more aggressive flight.

Here are a couple of logs from last December when I ran the 8S setup for the first time. The spikes you see are punchouts and the long peak is a funnel. You can see that the system was drawing 80-90A for a good 10 seconds during the funnel and the three spikes are all over 105A.

upgraded my Swift 16 with a Scorpion 4025-1100 6S 'Rex motor and RT 560's. WOT no gov get 2370 on fresh pack ! Absolute insanity. Full metal head and Tail gearbox. Like yours it is capable of 2200 continuous.

I was running the Century 600+ and peaking at 123 amps. Motor eventually failed. Wonder why.

Now it is virtually unboggable when in gov mode.

I would agree, once you have it dialed in, why risk the hardware?

Looks nice! I'm impressed with your packs ability to hold the voltage. I had a thermal probe on my HV85 when I was hitting 90A-100A and it never went over (if I recall) 115F - I love that ESC

Thanks for sharing!

I took the 600 out again yesterday. This time I hooked up the Eagle Tree and flew a typical flight. I did not do any long hard punch outs to see what it would spike at but rather just flew around and had fun. I am also running different blades than I was in the other graphs. I have switched from 600mm VBlades to 600mm CY Radix with CY Super Stubz paddles. The new paddles really sped up my cyclic response and I highly recommend them. I got my blades and paddles direct from Curtis Youngblood. They are cosmetic blems and I was able to get the mains for $62 and the paddles for $23.

I let one of my flying buddies fly the 600 and he is hooked. I think he will be showing up to the field in the next couple of weeks with the same power system in his 600.

Ayway here are the graphs, enjoy. Scorpion HK-4025 890kv, Castle HV-85, Outrage 25C 8S 3700mah, Radix 600.

Did you use a V-bar or some other flybarless system for the headgear? That is the most incredibly detailed model I have ever set eyes on - is it operational yet?

Here's my AH-6 "Little Bird". This is a huge scale model of the original bird...
Check out the deminsions and pictures. 5 blade head, Scorpion motor....

Scale Master Giant Scale RC Helicopter AH-6 "Little Bird"
This custom built RC helicopter is 95% complete!
What this Helicopter is NOT:
- This Scale AH-6 is not a "Kit" you can buy in a store
- Not small
- Is not a 1/6 Ultimate Soldier AH-6 conversion
- Is not made and built with cheap materials.
This bird is the ONLY one ever built like this.

She is huge in size: (one of the pics below shows a 1/18th scale AH-6 next to this beast so you can see the difference)
Length - 56 inches
Width - 26 inches
Height - 21 inches
Specs:
- Heli body is made from new gen fiberglass, and composites made in Germany.

- All CNC medal scale 5 blade head, swashplate. and follower
- Corbon-fiber core mechanics from Align (T-rex 600), torque tube mod
- All digital Futaba servos (4 total)
- Scorpion 740KV brusless motor 8S-12S capable
- 80 Amp (HV) High Volt Castel Creation Speed Control
- T-rex 700 mod for CCPM for no swashplate guide
- 7 CH Sectrum 2.4gHz receiver
- Full complete NAV, beacon, and LL light set up from XLIGHTS
- Scale detail cockpit and crew
- 2 Rocket pods and cannons

Heres what I need to complete the build

- Four, 4S 4000mAh Lipo's 2 in series (8S), and then the two series packs ran in parallel (8000mAn)
- Main blades
- SK-360 mixing system (optional)
- All Gyros
- K10364A 6A External BEC RCE-B6X

here is mine 2 copters.
e-sky lama v4 and e-sky belt cp v2.

the belt is less than 3 hours old, and i already managed to screw it up, because of embarrassing pilot error

the lama v4 is much more than 3 hours old, and is badly screwed up because of many instances of pilot bravery

so because that the pilot bravery quickly exceeded the helicopter capabilities (and pilot capabilites?) on the lama, i ordered the belt cp2.
when trying to fly the belt for the first time, about 1 hour and 30 minutes ago i quickly learned the hard way that things have changed since the last time i had a "proper" heli (hirobo shuttle sxx).
main problem was probably that i had mystical gyro settings on the radio, wich just wasnt there when i had the shuttle. old trusty shuttle: reciever on = gyro on.
clearly not so on the belt ^^

Moxus, ... you should try out the "Big Lama" contra rotating helicopter. I have a couple of them and they're great for flying around the yard. I use it mostly to keep my reactions sharp and... and you know that the more you fly, the faster you develop orientation. I do this every evening.....
