I came across an ad for one of these canards. Looks very interesting and I've always marveled at the canards. Since Multiplex is one of my favorite kits mfgs, I would love to know more about any experience with one. Check it out: http://www.rcgroups.com/links/index.php?id=4293

Very cool! It is now on my list for my third plane (Easy Star, Twin Star II,... I seem to be stuck on Multiplex)...

Several friends of mine fly this plane, one of them every week. (2) Himax 2815-3000, CC45's and 6x4 props. Parallel 3s/2200/12c lipo

Hey now,
I've had two of them, the first one died as a result of an avionics failure, the second one is going strong.
they fly o.k. box stock, not fast by any means, but very, very cool looking in the air. Mine can loop, do nifty rolls, fly inverted, and sometimes pull an outside loop. That's with the stock s400-6v motors on eight round cells and the Gunther props. I've seen them with Kontronik 400-23s, Mega 1615-4s and Axi out runners and none of them are fast (like the Twin Jet) but they do have a certain grace to them and after all, they are s'posed to be airliners so super fast isn't what they're about.
I always get lots of "ooohs and ahhhs" when I fly the thing.

They are a representation of a _Supersonic_ airliner (that never was built). When you can paint it bright orange, and run it vertical until it dissapears on the 400 can motors, let me know :)

Oohs and Ahhs are great - I prefer "Holy #@!! what was that!!!"

I have started with what I had around the house. 2 2408-21 outrunners, 15 amp esc's, 2100 lipo. Just to see how it would fly. Climes out nice very smooth straight up ok rolls loops invert slow pass fast pass both 2 to 3 feet off the grass. It also will glide in on landing forever. K

Actually no. It is a representation of this Airliner:

Not supersonic. High subsonic. Still cool though!

Jeff, another thought. I fly across from my apt. at a high school a few of the kids fly helis, 2 were in the pool doing water polo, they started doing the back stroke so they could watch to plane. After they and their dad's came over to get a closer look. How does your friends fly with that set up ? Keith

I just picked one up from a "wanted" ad in rcgroups. Stock motors, esc, servos, flown about 3 or 4 times - shipped for $100. This was his "extra" Sonic Liner, he had 2 of them. The one he kept he converted to a single motor brushless and repainted it to look like a supersonic fighter complete with canope - very cool.

Mike, thanks for the link to the REAL one - even if it was conceptual. That sure is the one that Multiplex took for their kit.

Flies nice and fast, good response from part throttle also. Floats really nice into the wind.

I'll try to shoot a short video next Friday - had the camera this week, but was too busy with rvincents F-14, A-4 - and my buddies F-20

You'd have to get creative with mounting - it doesn't really lend itself well to outrunners.

Power wise - 400xt should give you more watts than a 400 can

Yes the mount. I mounted dowels to the motors then glued the dowels where the motors sit. works great. K

Flew the Sonic today but only had time for a a couple of laps around the field. No bad habits and the only thing I need to do is dial in some down trim - she climes too easily.

It only had one esc when I got it and I could see that it wasn't going to work. The motors were serging on full throttle and the esc was getting very hot. I went to my lhs tonight and picked up a duplicate of the Jeti 030 that came with the plane. That seemed to cure the problem but it was too dark to fly her so ..... tomorrow.

Flew it today on the stock motors, 2 3s 2150 lipos hooked up one each to the two Jeti 030 escs. The stock motors have plenty of power. She flies beautifully at 1/2 throttle and at 3/4 she loops and rolls comfortably. To fly at WOT, you really need to put in a LOT of down elevator cause she loves to climb.

Landing is non-descript, she just glides in with a little power and shut her down at about 1' off the ground for the rest of the way.

Well that's only my 2nd flight with her. I'll spend a little more time on it this weekend when the magnets get here. The system for holding the top hatch (which runs nearly the full length of the fuse) really sucks. I'm using 2 rubberbands for now until the penny size magnets get here.

I checked the watts on the stock 400s and at wot they are reading ~210 watts with a Jeti 030 esc and an 3s 2150mah lipo. Does anyone see a problem with longevity on the motors with those readings? Keep in mind that normal flight is less then 3/4 throttle, more like 1/2.

I used strapping tape running top and bottom from the fuselage out to the tips. I notice a good reduction in wing flutter (which was pretty slight to begin with). It gives some strength to the upturn tips as well.

Ok guys. I am putting the paddles on this thread to get it beating again. I picked up one of these for $50.00 new in the box yesterday from a LHS that closed up. I can go with the stock motors, but I would rather just go brushless from the get go. I thought about doing some outrunners, but also looked at the E-flite Six series inrunners direct drive. Could possibly push about 500 watts total on two of these motors swinging a 6x5 DD prop.

Anyone have any updated data of a setup they just really love?

Yep. Twin Himax 2815-3000's, 6x4, CC45's and a pair of 2100/3s lipos

What are those motors pulling with the 6X4 props?? I have 2 of those Himax motors and I run 5.5X4.5 as my biggest prop. Those motors are rated at 30 Amps @ 275 Watts if you guys run them to 400+ watts you had better add Himax heat sink's. I pushed mine to 29 Amps @ 380 watts on 4S with a 4.5X4.1 prop and it was pretty fast in my Fat Draggy Stryker. But keep in mind, my motor it rite out there in the air flow so I gets great cooling.

CTD

Old Fart
11-20-2006, 05:33 PM
They pull well over 40A CTD, almost 50 at full throttle. I know what Himax says the motor is rated at, and it's _very_ conservative. This SL has run this way for more than a year without heat sinks (just don't stay on the throttle 100%)

FWIW, Maxx products told me when I put the same motor on my 39" wing with a 5.25x4.75 that i'd burn it up first time to the field. That was almost two years ago..... :)

I'm using Warp-4 5 turn motors with cheapo 18amp HiModel ESCs ,direct drive with APC 6X4e props and a cheapo HiModel 2200mah, 3cell, 20c LiPo. Hand launches have no sag at all. She's not fast by any means but will climb at 30 to 40deg, and 10+ min of mixed throttle flying. Very relaxed flyer & with flaps activated, super slow, crowd pleasing fly-bys. The easiest landing plane I have.
