These are our pets. Baby is a 1/2 Lab and 1/2 pitbull mix. She got the name baby cause she is one. Wimpest dog you'll ever meet, but she is a very good dog. When my grand kids were just little babies [they are4,5,6, 7 and 8 now, AGUH!] they would crawl over to the dog and twist and pull on her titties and she wouldnt growl or nothing. She knew better. She is about 12 now and very mellow. Except when I walk in the door from work, then she turns into Dino from the Flintstones!! There is nothing like a 75 Lbs. 1/2 lag 1/2 pit charging at you. I found her as a stray, so we don't know her exact age. It's the vets best guess that she was about 2 when we got her.

The other rascals are Taz [black and white cat] and Speedy. They are only 1 year old each. They are truley in love, thank God there fixed!! Both very good cats. Taz actually plays fetch like a dog. don't think he knows he is a cat so, don't tell him. Taz likes to wake us about 3 to 4 AM to play fetch. Some days we wake up to a bed full of kitty toys. He is funny, he will climb up on my wife when she is sleeping, tap her 3X on her face, as if to say HEY WAKE up. If she don't respond he will do it again and again. Weird cat but we love em. Speedy Cat likes to help me post here on Wattflyer so she will watch from on top of the monitor.

These are a couple of strays that my wife picked up on the side of the road as pups. Some jerk had burned them with a cigarette from nose to tail and we thought they would die. They didn't and are a couple of big galoots and great dogs to have around the place. Blackie and Brownie are their names.

I took the photo the first time they saw some snow this winter....they have grown a bunch since then. Brownie is laid back and we call him the "hippy dog" sometimes. Blackie "guards" us constantly whenever we're outside.

Ok, you asked for it! Ok, we've got Tatar the bird, he loves to fly just not RC (he got the name because he had to be taken home in a potatoe bag from a bird show). Then the next 2 are of Tina the gecko, she guards the foamy and 1 year old Stryker. Then we have Skippy the soon-to-be 10 year old puppy, with the way he acts he'll live to 20 (no joke). Then another Tina, but she's hungry in that picture. More Skippy...And finally we have my friend that lastest about 1 day, because Tennessee actually got decent snow after 3 years of nothing. And then we have the traditional me-nailing-my-brother-with-a-snowball picture.:D I hope you like it!

Her name is Penny, she's queen and ruler of the backyard. When we first got her, I had to add a 2' extension to our 6' fence, she could clear it in a single bound. She now minds the best of any dog we've had. She also loves to go to the field with me, I chase her around with the Wing Dragon 4. Spoiled, but we love her.

Well, here I present to you Miles and Cleo, our two spoiled rotten resident felines.

Cleo, the big black teddy bear, claimed me by following me all around a shelter we stopped at on a whim--I was planning on buying a new truck that day and came home with her instead. Cleo is short for Cleocatra, by the way.

Miles, our tiny tabby, was a four week old kitten when my co-worker found her and her two sisters huddled in a patch of grass median in the middle of a highway interchange on his way back to the office. Some jerk dumped them there. We thought Miles was a 'he' because of a hernia she had when we found her(who knew cats got hernias?) and she was named for Miles Davis, 'cause she's so cool. My in-laws adopted her two sisters.

50+AirYears
02-26-2007, 03:10 PM
Sure is. That was for her 5th birthday. We could probably get pictures of her on Stuff on my cat. Xingu is a very mellow person - - as long as another cat doesn't come near. I almost included a picture of her on her leash. She took to a leash with almost no problem. When we take her for a walk, it's a 50-50 compromise - half the time she goes where she wants, and the other half time we let her lead.

It's kind of cute. during the summer, we ask her if she wants to go outside, and she goes to the closet where we keep the leash and harness, rubs the door, and meows. If we ask her in the wintertime, she looks at us with a funny expression, hisses, and walks away.

My bird loathes my dad...we just recently caught him hissing and almost growling at the window his cage as by, only to see my dad standing on the other side of the window. It was hilarious. Oh, and he flies now so he's starting to learn the lessons of flying. Like: if you can't find a landing spot the cage top is home base, don't land on the ceiling molding, don't land on the window blinds, don't land on the chandelier that's hanging from the second story (that scared the pee out of him, but he's never done that again), and land on my mom whenever possible because it's fun.

My 3 Siamese (l-r), Tia, Alicia and Ginger. Tia and Ginger are Ali's daughters from 2 litters a year apart.

There's also Ali's other offspring Bear, Coco, Cubby, Spot and Samantha, but they live with my ex. Plus Hishtoo, the brothers Josie and Charlie (the latter is the father of Ali's kids) and finally there's Serina, the only non-Siamese. I'm only posting the pic of the 3 I have here though:

Here's Cooper, the Yellow Lab. In these pictures here 6 months old, my avatar picture is him when he was 8 weeks old. He's 1 year old now and weighs 90 lbs!. He's a great dog and great with the kids. We also have 3 cats, Neko, Zoey and Lou. Cooper will chase after Neko and Zoey but Lou is the "old man" of the house and won't back down to a big dumb dog! He swats Coop on the nose if he gets to close (he's declawed though so no harm). Cooper doesn't even back away while he's getting hit! He just flinches and closes his eyes until the beating is over and the cat walks away!!
My daughter (Age 7) also has a goldfish named "Flounder" :)

The pics are Cooper posing with my Lumberjack, a 48" modified plank that is a ripper on the slopes.

Copied from another thread...

Oh, I'll haver to bookmark that one. Thanks Rod!

I'll have to try to get a picture of my two little "Gremlins" (silver "classic" tabbies) but it's hard to get them to sit still, much less sit together. They are just a little over a year old so they still act like kittens but are mostly grown so they can be rather destructive.

It was funny this morning. My wife was getting ready to go to work and was just about to tie her hair back in a pony tail when Jenny jumped up on the bathroom counter, grabbed the hair band my wife was about to use and ran off with it. Jenny loves to play with the little bands and they are all over the house!

Ahh, but we love the little monsters!

Their mischieviousness is their charm, I'll give you that. There's not much point in me trying to write a letter with a cat in my lap, or type on my laptop if either Tia or Ginger is up here either. The writing starts to look like a Pablo Picasso painting and the typing looks like my granddaughter pounded on the keyboard. Ali is 8 years old and the 'twins' (though 8 months apart...) are 7. They are kind of at a lazy age. Typical teenagers I guess :D Ali likes to play fetch with a colored foam ball and will go until she just wears herself out. Trouble is she'll often drop a ball on my ear at 3am and want to play. It's hard to say no. -Rod-

We have beds for them in our imaculate kept carage. My theory is> cats should be allowed to be free and feel free. We let them take turns coming in the house every so often. They love it outdoors. They always stay in the yard and away from the road. When and if they want to come indoors to 'get away', we let them in but they go out at night. This way, I have a place to sleep and out house still smells like new:Q . These are all rescued cats from one way or another. Sierra> abandoned(across street in woods) from a ferel mom, Brownie abandoned(across street in woods) from a ferrel mom, Alley rescued from a tree in Miami, Micha(baby kitten) rescued from the rain in Miami(showed up at the door at my wifes work during heavy rain. Mochita saved from wild near my work(Daytona Beach)( I put food in carrier and Mochita walked in and I shut the door and took her home). The new twins (orange tigers) brought to my wifes work and she agreed to give them a home. I think I covered all of them.;-) NO MORE CATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:Q .

You're confusing terms, Scott. All of them are Siamese except for the Tabby Serina. Siamese come in various color "points": Seal, Chocolate, Blue, Lilac, Red, Tortie and a few others. There's also different body types. Charlie, the boy on my shoulder, is an applehead, also called a Traditional. In fact he's registered with the TCA, Traditional Cat Assn. They tend to be stocky and muscular with round heads. Then there's the Wedgies, which are much thinner, have ears and eyes that are larger in proportion to their heads and thin angular faces. There's a 3rd catagory that I can't remember the name of that is a blend between the wedgies and appleheads. But all are Siamese.

In answer to your question, the blue points are the greyer ones, yes, though if you get them into the light they actually do have a blue tint to their fur. Lilac's have a light 'purple' cast to them, Chocolates are lighter brown than Seals, Reds are definitely red, etc. There's something there for everyone, really :D -Rod-

xuzme720

they also use the same "point" colors for himalayans and a few other breeds as well.
I used to have a real sweet seal point himi. of course, I prefer the himi's to siamese, they're usually quieter. :) siamese can raise a ruckus when they're in the mood.

That's sure true. I see that as their charm though. Sometimes :D My oldest boy, Smokey, died when he was 19 in 2004. Poor old guy was half blind and had trouble walking but still managed to give me a near-heart attack by getting up on top the curtains. And he had this thing for canned milk in last couple of years. When he wanted some he let us know. Let the neighbors know too...sort of like nails on a chalkboard on 'roids. He wasn't shy.

When I got Alicia in 1999 as sort of a post-cancer pick-me-up and birthday present to myself, she didn't speak for about 6 months. That's her in the pics below...she was really tiny! One night she had something to say though during dinner. She was in the kitchen, we were all in the family room eating and this hair-raising howl eminates from through the doorway. The entire house busted a gut, other cats dove for cover or came out with fur on end and tails puffed up...she was just saying 'Hello' I guess :Q -Rod-

actually been thinking alot about either a english curl or a scottish fold. or to be more exact, wishful thinking. my wife is allergic to cats, so I doubt that will happen anytime soon. we've got a shih tzu named gizmo now, the sole survivor of a zoo we used to have, or at least, I have had. a quick list: 1 green iguana Louie, fish(both fresh and salt, the salt was a 90 gallon reef!), hamsters (many, forget exact numbers), a squirrel (long story, don't ask. lol), my seal point, Mokie(her papers say her name was mocha miss ;-)) and a blue persian, Harry, my ex "had to have!". louie, harry, mokie and hamsters have all passed on due to natural causes, the fish mostly due to natural causes, the squirrel was fine the last time I saw him, but that was a long time ago. thanks for letting me go on about them... I still miss them. especially you, louie and mokie.

How about a Rex? Being nearly hairless, she may be able to tolerate one.

I've done fish as well, including one foray into salt. It was an 80 gal reef and wasn't too bad, but after a year another load of live rock I brought in had a couple of those armored crabs in them I guess and my inverts started vanishing. When hundreds of dollars of 'shrooms and worms disappear in a week, the writing is on the wall. Let me guess...you had Cichlids too? :D I don't know how many times I've done them, mostly Africans but did the Convicts and stuff too as a kid. In the early 80's I sprung a bunch of money for a pair of albino Lamp. brichardi, got them conditioned, took them to a show, WON(!) got them home and about the time they laid eggs for the first time their heater locked up. I think the tank temp was around 120 and my $200 fish were floating. http://www.usapatriotsamerica.com/forum/images/smilies/headbanger.gif -Rod-

xuzme720
05-22-2007, 04:53 AM
oh wow! guess that is just how it goes sometimes...and always that same sick feeling in your stomach.:blah:
never did cichlids, but almost everything else. even had a black ghost once. way cool until he started thinning my school of neons. had a few molly's and platy's give birth. my big freshwater fish were gouramis.

my reef went south when I went on vacation and my ph headed into the basement...when I got back I did a partial (30%) and added some extra buffer to try to bring it back but it was too late. a brain died and went toxic, se la vie. still don't know why it dipped like that....I even had xanthia's doing fabulous before the dip.

hadn't thought about a rex, that might be an option. don't know if Gizmo would like a new feline sibling though... ;-)

Never know til you try. Tell Gizmo he'd love one ;)

It sounds like something in your tank died. Or if someone was caring for it they overfed it, or the power went out and you lost the biofilter...something.

You'd like Cichlids. Very impressive and personable fish. Since you have salt experience, Lake Tanganyikans might be up your alley since they like their pH up around 8 or so. They won't be near as finicky as salt though. -Rod-

yeah, that was about 3k in live stock that went down the drain. my wife was very upset. up until that point I'd never had any trouble with salt, with the exception of the occasional death of a fish here and there. never like this though. my thought was when it happened I had been doing my pH testing with some older strips, when I got back from vaca, I picked up new ones. it's possible the old strips reagents had gone bad, and been giving me false readings, because armed with the new strips is when I found the pH so low. and in doing such a drastic partial (I usually only did 10-15%) I may have inadvertently stressed the whole tank beyond limits (especially with them already being at a low pH but having gotten there slowly) by bringing it up so fast. the final straw was the brain dying and I didn't notice (he was hidden behind some live rock). I just didn't have the will to start over after that, but I have been thinking about doing another reef.

thank goodness I got into heli's first! now I don't have the cash to kill more stuff!

My two little 'garfields' are cute and active as ever, except for a minor problem>My darker long haired one got sick. HE is recovering fine though and finally eating again. I was worried about him. He got slow, always tired and puking once in a while. I gave him kitten medication and after a day and a half, he started playing more and finally eating again. This is what I removed from his diet>> Me and my wife went to 'Walgreens' A grocery store near our home. We bought alot of Friskies soft canned food(tuna, white fish, chicken, beef etc.) OH, I also found this 3 pack of kitten milk. These are about the size of yahoo cartons. I gave them and they drank a carton in one day and the soft food was CHUNKY with gravy.Soon after they ate and drank, the darker tiger got sick. SO, I gave a carton of the milk to my other 5 adult cats and they wouldn't even touch it after smelling it. I dumped it. I had my wife return the soft cat food and buy our usuall 'Special Kitty' food at Walmart. Saturday after a few ocassional naps and wrestling with his bro, he ate some salmon (S.Kitty). This was a great sign. He went potty and started his normal kitty wrestling and running to me for petting and to be held again. Even though the Friskies was to CHUNKY for them to care for it, I think Carmel scarfed down too much , too fast of the kitten milk. Anyway, no more. You really hate to see your loved ones sick. Especially at 5 weeks old. Very delicate time right now. The balance must be perfect until they are old enough to know better and have better senses. Anyway, all is good now, Scott.

I think it was probably the milk, not the Friskies. At best you might give them a tablespoon of the milk at any one time, not a carton a day. FWIW the girls will only eat the Friskies for wet foods and they much prefer the shredded stuff, not the chunks or slices. Anything else they'll either let fossilize or they'll puke it back up. For dry food they'll only eat Iam's. Not true...they'll eat the others but then punish me by leaving a 6 inch long ribbon of it on the rug. I'm just a slave to my cat's culinary whims. -Rod-

Your going to love this! The mother is a 45 pound half Blue Heeler half Lab. The father is a 15 pound MinPin or Manchester Terrior (we're not sure because he was an abbandoned puppy). You might ask how that's possible, let's just say he has really long.......legs!LOL So the puppys could grow to be anywhere between 10 and 50 pounds!!

Here they are about 8 months ago shortly after we got him.

I think you are right about the milk. Got too much of a good thing to quickly. I use an undless food feeder for my adult cats and I need to use a strick diet for kittens until they know how to ration themselves:p. I was just used to believing that if they get hungry/thirsty> It will be there for them. UPDATE: BOTH cuties have returned to the terrorism I got used to when I first brought them home last week or so. :D.Scott

Thanks Bruce.

For all pet lovers, with the current scare out there about unsafe pet foods, I thought you may like to know that from my research any foods made by the Mars company is safe. I know there seems to be more foods added to the list every week so this may help you decide what to feed your pets. According to the Mars company they get all their ingrediants from domestic sources.

They make many poular brands of dog and cat food including Pedigree, Whiskas, and Cesar as well as others.

If you are concerned about what you have now the FDA has made a list of all pet foods that have been included in the list so far.

I am sure you are right. I am positive it was too much and too fast (kitten milk) of a good thing. I just wasn't sure, so, I just wanted to remove any threat that could have been the down fall. Fully recovered after a day and a half of puking on OUR bed!!!!!!!!!! LOL! I usually use PURINA!!! When they get weaned off the soft food, it will be Purina(for Hairball) forever. I use the HAIRBALL version and my cats/monsters :D love it. I am slowly using Iams,(hard kitten food), that we were givin' with the kittens/terrorists :D, but I will be buying Purina Kitten Chow soon. The kittens are eating the hard stuff now and then. As for a treat for ALL my 'army' of cats, I use Special Kitty canned foods, and they chow it down .Scott.

Thanks Bruce.

I never had any good luck with fish. I could never get the water cleared and keep the amonia levels down. I used top and bottom filters and constantly checked the Ph levels and made water changes. Nonetheless, they all gave up the ghost.
My ex and I had numerous pets: 2 parakeets, 2 zebra finches, 2 cats: Suzy and Felix fish and lastly 2 cockatiels.
One day wifey came home and almost feinted....she thought Felix was INSIDE the 40 gallon fish tank. The cat however was still dry as she was between the tank and the wall. LOL and I guess it looked like she had decided to deep dive for the goldies.
I had a beautiful malamute once. Very friendly dog...don't count on them to guard the house though, they don't care.

If your ammonia levels never went down it's probably because you either overfed the tank or you changed too much water or too often. The filters themselves are there to deal with the ammonia. Bacteria in the filter break the ammonia down into nitrites and nitrates. Overcleaning and overfeeding are therefore bad. Whenever I started up a new tank, the first thing I did was vacuum out a bunch of gunk from the bottom of one of my established tanks and used that to seed the new tank. A week later I dumped a bunch of goldfish in. A week after that I started swapping fish...goldfish out, new fish in, one or two per day. In the meantime everything is stabilizing. So long as nothing went wrong, I changed out 20% of the water once per week. Once per month I vacuumed the undergravel filter. Other than that I left it alone. -Rod-

My brother has two cats like that. They were feral kittens living behind the barn at his father-in-law's house, and he rescued the two that he could catch. They grew out of the shower thing eventually, but for the first two years, you couldn't keep them out of the bathroom while showering. When my kids were small she would go up and tuck each one of them in at bedtime. She would lay in the bed with each of them for about 5 minutes then come back down stairs until me and the wife went to bed and then she would go get back in bed with my daughter.

Scott there was a huge problem when the movie 101 Dalmations came out... everyone had to have one so they got them but most didn't know how to handle hyper pups I suppose so a lot of them were dumped... stupid people...

Heres something that might be even stranger than seeing a cat in a party hat - - a cat on a leash. I think I said before, when we ask Xingu if she wants to go outside, she goes to the kitchen closet door where we keep the leash, and rubs against it, then waits while we put the halter on her and take her outside to play with her playmates, the shrews that live in a planter bed.

Whoops, the photo didn't attach the first try! If at first you don't suceed, and all that - -

This is actually the second cat that accepted leash. The first one was a male Heinz 57 back around 1972. That one, we could even take for walks around the block. He was the one I locked in the basement one day when the wife was visiting her mother in another country, and when I got home from work, the cat was laying on the living room sofa. The basement door was still locked. He just looked up at me, stood up, took a long slow stretch and yawn, then looked at me again like he was laughing at me. When I went into the basement, his food bowl was almost empty, and the litter box had been used.

Cats are strange!

Also, strangely enough, Xingu is a very long hair cat who also lets us shave her for the summer. Since we started doing that, she has been a lot more active.

A Happy Ending for Someone's Pooch!

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. Cats usually get credit for having nine lives, but a golden retriever mix that survived three days in the James River may change that notion.

The pooch, who was believed to have drowned on Friday, was found alive Sunday and now the Newport News Animal Services Division is looking for his owner.

Police received a 911 call Friday night about a dog that had fallen in the water. Officials said the owners of the dog were fishing when the dog jumped off the pier and was pulled under water. Another caller said to cancel the emergency because the dog could not be found and probably had drowned.

Officers received yet another call around 3 a.m. Sunday that someone spotted a dog stuck in a culvert along the shore.

"They were trying to get to the dog," said Newport News Animal Services Superintendent Bill Wise. "But they just couldn't."

When the tide finally came in, the severely weakened dog was washed out of the culvert.

The dog had suffered a dislocated hip, but on Monday, the hip popped back into place. The dog is now doing well, is eating and waits at a shelter for its owner.

"It's pretty amazing that the dog is still alive and survived for three days," Wise said. "He had to tread water or find a place to stand. I guess survival instinct was kicking in."

As of this morning the dogs owner has still not claimed him...:{ You'd think he would be all over the SPCA to get him back since it is a huge story here in the news!

The SPCA said they have had about 100 calls from folks who said they would adopt him if the owner does not come forward.:ws:

Me neither, but you have to sometimes. People that will dump their own pet out in the country will boot him off a pier too. -Rod-

Hi Rod...So did the river dog ever get re-united with his family?
Boy I really hate when dogs get lost!
I was running my dogs at the beach today, and there was a "mastiff" mix who was lost. My dogs were playing with him the day before, so I knew his name was "Tank",and he lived nearby!
I waited for his owner to come looking, but didn't show up.
So I loaded all my dogs, and Tank, into the car.
(He is so big he barely fit!!)
Then went in search of his owner.
Talked to a friend who works near there, and he said bring the dog by because he might know him.
Turns out he did!!!
We drove the dog home, but no-one at the house.
However a very relieved young man soon pulled into the driveway.
Gotta love a happy ending!!

Murph,

Sorry, I don't know. If anyone else happens to know the answer, I'd like to hear about it too. -Rod-

The owner's still haven't claimed the dog. Sounds like they don't deserve him anyway!

I don't have any pets, but someday I would like to have a little dog and name him Tailwheel.
