You are going to get one aren't you?????? I would jump on that but I've already ordered the 52" Richmodels P-38. http://www.avia-richmodel.com/english/Products_View.asp?ID=454

I ordered their Spitfire that just came in Tuesday. I don't need a bigger garage, I need a smaller addiction.

Sweet!!! I love P-38's..........Oh crap now there is going to be another plane on my list of must haves. My wife told me tonight that I need more origanization in the garage for my planes. Shes right, I have to look into making a rack system. She said that just as I walked in the door with 2 new kits, LOL!! I picked up a Formosa and a Ultra Fly Bae Hawk, fun, fun, fun!!

Cool, It looks like a early vaiant like possibly an "F" model, by the chin intakes. Mike, It's been around for a couple of years. If you can find some of the older ads for GWS it was in the backround shots. Then It disappeared. I called GWS about it and they told me that they were having liscensing problems or something like that, when they pulled it off the market.

Like the 4 blade spinner on one side and no spinner on the other. LOL

It's big too. Into the mid 40" someplace. This may be my first twin!! We'll have to see how my Corsair build goes though. I was shocked to see just how many parts come in a slope kit!!

Hey Grasshopper, Where'd you order that p-38 from. I did not see any dealers at that web link you provided.

The company I work for has several manufacturing plants in China. I had one of our Branch Managers buy one over there and shipped it on a container we have coming to one of our US facilities.

I think you can get them here through Nitro Models and there's usually another one I see on E-Bay. They're the same model.

Here's the link to Nitro Models P-38 http://www.nitroplanes.com/plinigasrare.html

Here's an older link to Richmodels USA. Don't know if it's still there or not. http://www.wattflyer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=975

Hi Andy, don't worry about the parts count in the GWS kits; Those black plastic "trees" with 50 pieces? Only 2 of them fit your plane! The rest are for every other kit GWS makes. Same with the clear plastic parts.
Good Luck!

Sweet! I actually started it tonight. I had visions of putting some kind of shell on it (glass or tissue paper), or at least a lot of polycylic. But I just gave it a quick sand and spackled the bad spots. I think I'm just going to put one coat of poly over the foam, or over the foam after I paint it. It seems like a shame to add any weight to it (paint will be bad enough I'm sure).

I got a bunch of 50 cent bottles of cool acrylic colors over at the crafts store today. Got a bunch of different grays and blues and one or two olive type greens. Should be very satisfying if I can get it together! Looking forward to owning a blue plane!

Yes, what he said. I had ordered a 'soon to be released' P-40 about 2 years ago from Tower. The date kept getting pushed back, so I finally cancelled the order and ordered another small electric P-40. To my knowledge, they STILL haven't released it.

LOL. They are listing on their website now as coming soon as well.

I got an Email from Joyce at GWS about ordering one on the early bird program saying they are available now in the unpowered version but shipping from them matches the price of the plane so I will probably wait til they hit our shores

Well I payed for mine last night and received confirmation from Joyce at GWS that it will be shipped to me around Sept.22. This is gonna be a great plane to have!
I'm going with a pair of Himaxx 2015-4100 in mine, on anywhere from a 1500 to 2100 3 cell lipo. I'll see what I can get away with as far as the battery goes. Seriously thinking I'm gonna attempt to go with a set of Micro air retracts on this puppy as well. I've ordered a pair of 18 amp esc's, and just need to track down another Himaxx.

Anyone got a part number on the GWS P-38. My LHS can get any GWS plane as long as I give them a number, and asking them to locate it is near impossible, they may have to do some work and that ain't happening....

i've got a p38 kit by great planes, the profile one. i always buy artfs because my handywork is crap, so it will probably never get built and it's glow. i've been looking for another p38 for a while and wow, gws are supposed to be doing this one. also, my car trunk/boot limits the size of planes to about 1.2m wingspan, especially with twin boom fuselage. i've got a gws c47 i've flown twice and that can be a rocket with the hyperion p1913 outrunners (300 sized) but i've been keeping it scale and mostly lumbering around. with a hyperion 2200 3s 20c battery you get a good flight time and the escs are cc thunderbird 18 amps. this is the setup i will put in the p38. highly recommended !!

The GWS 38 has not been released to the public yet. I'm in their "Early Bird" program, and that's why I'm getting the one I'm getting. It will be available in 4 versions...white sloper, silver sloper, silver brushed motors and silver brushless motors. The early bird club members are getting the white foam slopers.
I just ordered the Micro air retract system for mine. I've never done retracts before, but I'm gonna give it a shot on this plane. I feel this one deserves all the "bells and whistles"

At this point GWS USA lists them on back order and does not provide any information as to when they will be available to dealers.

Just got my earlybird GWS-38. hopefully start the build this weekend. Very nice looking kit. Very different from the older GWS kits design wise. Foam quality looks to be the same as all their other planes. I'll be going with dual GWS 2208 motors with dual CC ThunderBird 18 speed controllers powered by a MegaPower 2200mAh 11.1v lipo. I don't know where the 22-25 ounce they list came from but I'm looking at 29 ounces for all parts without having put the plane together. That's what other people are also seeing. More like a 30-35 ounce RTF flying weight.

firemanbill
10-05-2006, 10:45 PM
Can't wait to see it together and get the report Lost!

How does it compare quality wise to the earlier gws stuff, does everything seem to fit together well? I like the pic with the corsair on top of it to guage the size, nice touch.

L0stS0ul
10-06-2006, 02:57 AM
Quality wise most of the kit is comparable to the rest of GWS's offerings. There are a few exceptions. The first exception is the horizontal tail fin. It is molded in a different type of foam that is much more dense than what they normally use. I'm not entirely sure why this piece is different from the rest of the kit. Another part is the landing gear. The included gear is much much stronger than any other GWS kit I have seen. And finally the molded peices for the canopy and and the clear cowls are very different from older kits. These seem to be some type of flexible plastic that will take damage better than the older more ridgid plastic. It is heavy though. Definitally heavier than I was expecting. The fit of the components seems to be very good. I do not anticipate much fidiling to get rid of seams

Here's a few pics of mine. Please pardon the two different spinners, the one on the starboard side is a temporary one placed on for the pics, while I wait for my mail ordered three blade gws spinners to arrive. Did the maiden yesterday. Two 6 minutes sorties. Plane flew great, and GWS has a winner with this one!

hey Jagzilla, that's a really nice model you've made. what's your setup ? also is the rear end fairly strong?

Jagzilla
10-19-2006, 12:15 AM
Thanks for the compliment, AIJ.
The rear of the booms where they meet up with the rudders is a weak area, no doubt. GWS does include a fibreglass rod to put in there, but further strengthening mods are probably a good idea. A lot of this has been discussed over at RC Groups in the GWS forum. I have put carbon fibre "tow" down at the end of the boom and into the rudders to hopefully help strenghten it up. This could be a problematic area for me as I've built this bird as a belly lander. I'll see how it goes, and deal with it if there's issues.

The plane consists of a pair of Himaxxx 2015-4100's, in GWS gearboxs, using the "B" gear ratio. I think that's somewhere around 4.4-1 ratio.Props are the GWS 9070 3 blader's. It uses two Hexatronic 15 amp esc's, and a 2100 3 cell lipo. Pulls around 20 amps at WoT. AUW is 30 oz's.

The plane is not terribly fast, but decent. I know I gave up some performance with my prop choice, but I really liked the look of the 3 bladed props on this one.
J

firemanbill
10-19-2006, 12:46 AM
Looks good Jag! the only thing I see that I don't care for is the center pul elevator control rods.:( I know it would be more difficult to put it in the booms but it would look so much better!

Nice look though! Did you make the nose art decal yourself or does it come with the kit?

Jagzilla
10-19-2006, 01:46 AM
I made the decal Bill.
Some of the guys in the other group have put the servo in the boom for the elevator. They are putting them inside the scoop, so they are hidden. Its a nice mod. To be honest though, I really wasn't that concerned about it.
