When I was learning to fly Gyrocopters I tried a similar tactic but the wind was not steady enough to life me and the gyroglider. I finally found an instructor with a two seater and got my instructions.

Screen name has a partial relation to real gyrocopters. Way back when I was trying to think of a screen name, I recalled seeing a fellow flying his gyrocopter in a 20 knot wind with the nose tethered to a tree .
