hobbico flyzone cessna 182 skylane
I have one of the original Flyzone Cessna 182 models, the one with marooon trim color and a brushed 380 motor.
Based on my experience with two other brushed motor park flyers I know that the power will be marginal and the plane will not perform very well and will basically be no fun to fly.
I want to convert it to a brushless motor system from the get go. I need advice. I still do not know this lekky stuff well. I recently converted my Fun World 400 from brushed to brushless and I chose the wrong type of motor which caused an inflight meltdown and total destruction of the plane and all onboard equipment from the ensuing crash.
Can you guys please advise me as to what motor would be appropriate, ESC, and prop? Thank you! :)
Post up as many specs on the plane as possible.
Weight, wingspan, etc, and type of flying you plan on doing.
Also, how large a prop will physically fit?

I do prototypical scale flying. 8" prop is the largest.
Looks like that 15 amp ESC does brushed only.
Roughly call 15A x 8.4v = 126 watts.
Would you want to keep the same batteries or 'upgrade' to lipos?
Does it have a gearbox?
A 380 sized motor on 7.2v I see runs near 20,000 rpm? Anyone have a guess if that's right for this plane?
I'm a bit out of my element, but a quick kva calc, 8 volts, 20,000rpm, 2500kv?
So a 125 watt motor (or a bit less) 2500kv is 'in the ballpark' at a guess.
Thanks Dave! I have LiPo's and that is what I will use with the brushless motor. The stock setup is direct drive.
What motors would I look at, at the major online retailers, for examples?
Cruise the 'sport flyer' thread, and the for-sale threads for a quick look at who makes what.
If you google brushless outrunner or brushless inrunner you'll turn up a lot.
Something like this?
Mind you I'm guessing a bit on everything, but that looks pretty close.
If you are using a 2S battery, you could go a bit lower in KV, you want I think 20,000 rpm, call it 20,000/11.7 = 1700kv.
Watch the weight, too, if you can measure the weight of the current setup that will help keep you from going too heavy.

I purchased the same model about 1 1/2 months ago.
My conclusion is this plane needs LiPo power. The stock 'nim' batt. sucks. I fried the ESC on the test stand, fer cryin' out loud..!:concern:
Called Hobbico, they sent out a replacement, AND a new motor. Same as in the '07-ish release...
The motor is fine, just the power supply is lacking...
I'm gonna try a 2S 7.4v 1500mAh to start.
Electrifly makes a nice 12(15?)A LiPo ESC which should work out. Anything is better than this bird's stock setup. This model has potential, it's just it came out in a pivotal time in power systems.
- I called Hobbico a couple weeks ago, asked them if they have any plans on upgrading the P/Sys...
- No joy.

Let me start with a disclaimer: I'm certainly no expert in these matters. I did, with lots of help from here, and with a mistake or 2 along the way, upgrade the power system of one of my planes. (Well, 2. But the second one I just got a package motor/edf. Doesn't really count.)
I'd start with getting the weight of your plane. The weight of the new power system, motor/esc/battery, will be different, but this is a good starting point.

And then ask alot of questions! I highly recommend shopping at places that give specs of what power a given motor will give based on battery and propeller size. HeadsupRC is one that was recommended to me, and I like it.
Here's a similar parkflyer Cessna 182 and gives a spec for BL that I can honestly say is more than enough ... I have this model and it flies on rails. Go for similar in the Hobbico and I reckon you'd be more than happy.

Far too high Kv.
They now put a 1700Kv brushless motor in that model. It comes paired to a 7x3 prop if I'm not mistaken. I know because I regularly buy my LHS out of 'em! They're great motors for the money but the wire is a bit brittle. I use some hot glue at the base to keep 'em from moving around.
