GUYS, i need your help.
im getting a t-28 trojan, very soon. i like the fms and dynam planes but then there is the parkzone model also. i really like the first 2 because they come with lights, retracts, flaps etc. but the only thing im worried about is finding parts. the parkzone model, looks like parts are aplenty, but not so much on the fms and dynam(at least not for me to find).
now im pretty much a noob, only been flying for a month. but i have several solid takeoffs and landings, so i think im ready for the t-28. so my questions are:

ParkZone - 100% better for you. Wait on the others until you have more airplanes under your belt. It flies better anyway. :)
There is no such thing as crash-proof. Flaps don't help much for small lightly loaded models. In fact the weight and complexity they add sometimes makes the plane fly worse! On large heavy fast models they are sometimes almost essential. But the benefit to park fliers is very limited - other than cool factor. The only "Mod" I did on the ParkZone was to increase throws - but you will be fine for now. Mike |
1) Can't help you too much here. I don't have a T-28, and looks like you have most of the +/- figured out. The other consideration is reliability. I've seen all these at the field. The FMS plane's rx was having brownouts probably due to overloading the bec with all those servos. It was also having plenty of nlg (nose landing gear) issues and mlg door sequencing problems. Dynam one seemed OK, I think he might have had nlg issues as well. The legendary PZ T-28, being the simplest, had the least trouble. The only thing I see wrong with those is the canopies falling off. If I ever got one, I'd add magnets to it.
2) Haven't seen it done, but seen their stuff. I'm sceptical about it, but that's just my opinion. 3) The cowl flaps are only eye candy. You understand on a full scale plane those are used for controlling airflow, and therefore, cooling of the engine. The guy having brownouts? I recommended he just unplug those and I think his brownouts stopped. 4) Search the threads out there. Plenty of T-28 stuff mostly involving speeding them up. Haven't seen much about the others, but then i haven't followed the threads on them. Hopefully others who actually own them will chime in and help out. |
i have a spektrum ar6110e on the way(thanks to cheese pudin). do you think that would be better to use?

+1 on Rcers comment. I have the PZ T-28 version and while the FMS and Durafly are sexier with more bells and whistles, the PZ T-28 is a brute. I've souped mine up with a bigger motor/esc combo and modded out the LG for bumpy grass fields. The weak point of the PZ is in fact the stock nose gear. If you like retracts, forget about grass fields altogether. And there's no free lunch on paved runways either. A hard landing on a paved runway will break the retracts.
Your LHS will carry parts for the PZ version. You'll have to wait on the boat from China to get parts for the others in most cases. Good luck on whichever you decide. I love this plane ! -Hawk |
Parkzone....
Hands down more value than the others. Reliable, out of the box solid, good support and nearly bulletproof. Heres some reasons why: (I'm the Jim in the "Jim's all over my tail" comment) And some info about our racing series: http://www.sefsd.org/index.php?optio...100&Itemid=110 I have seen many of the other brands come and go... what I see most of all however, is pilots having trouble with those other planes with all the fancy 'stuff'. Everything from gear failures, to sequencer failures, bad esc's, loud growly motors and more. Usually a couple of crashes, and you dont see them again. The Parkzone is solid reliable. If it crashes, its going to be because of your own thumbs, not some low budget electronic failure. |
Retracts are problematic if flying off of grass. I went for the durafly and wish I'd gone for the Parkzone.

The rx itself isn't the cause of brownouts, if that's what you're concerned about. It's too weak of a power supply to the rx. In this case, all these planes supply that from a BEC built into the ESC, which in the case of the FMS bird seems to be overwhelmed with too many servos from the reports I've heard, and the one I saw. The 4 regular control surface servos, 2 more for flaps, 3 gear, at least 2 for gear doors, then I think 4 for the cowl flaps. 16 servos! I can't speak for the range of that rx, never used one.

I'll jump on the bandwagon, here - Parkzone! Pay the extra cash for a plane that will fly out of the box. RCERS nailed it with his recommendation of waiting to purchase the other brands you mentioned.

Nitroblast, did you have the racing clip where someone zoomed up out of them frame then came screaming back down, and the plane looked like confetti when it hit? I LMFAO at that one! I'm NOT saying the PZ planes are weak. They're TOUGH! (Ask my PZ Corsair...) Just loved that clip! I'm moving further north soon. May have to find a PZ T-28 and join you guys. Looks like fun!

hey guys , thanks for all the responses. you guys sold me, i had my "not so local hobby shop" (closest shop is 1hr drive one way-i live in the sticks)order a PK t28, should be here monday *fist pumps. i have a concrete pad i take off and land on, actually its prolly a scale aircraft carrier size pad. but i live on a 300 acre farm and was thinking about upgrade tires, to land in grassy fields also. what size is good? also would really like to get nav lights. are you guys using them if so where is a good place/link to get them.

Get some Dubro 2-1/4" low-bounce wheels for that PZ T-28. Makes it FAR easier to take off and land off grass. The provided wheels are too small and squishy. And some 2200 mAh 3S batteries. The model can handle the extra weight easily. But have fun. It's a great plane for learning with.
I have been flying mine for a few weeks now. Tore off the landing gear trying to land in 15 mph winds. Glued back on, took right off again. |
I replaced my gear completely with heavy duty gear taken off a hobbico trainer. You won't regret the Park Zone T-28. I'm running 4S now and she screams !

Nitro,
You guys are having way too much fun out there ! I guess my souped up 4S T-28 would be disqualified, especially when I slap my big 4S Nano down on the table.:D |
pattern: that vid is awesome. wish we had stuff like that around here. i race 1/5 scale 2 stroke bajas. had to build a race-track in the back yard, just so i could race. had to do some serious negotiations with the ol lady to get it done, but it is fun. but i live in the middle of nowhere so we dont have stuff like that, unless we make it.
would like to put the checker pattern on my wing, like the one in the video. is that paint? or a sticker |
Those videos are just a teaser to how much fun we really have, and yeah, those are just stickers.

do you have a link for that hobbico gear? |

Understood! I've had issues with their micro bricks failing. I'm new to this hobby but when I moved away from HH umx components I felt the same way as when I was a kid and upgraded from an all in one stereo to a component based system. |
THANKS FOR THE HELP... the t28 and umt28 are awesome!!!!
just maiden both of my t-28's in the past few days and all i can say is wow!!!!! flew on 100 percent rates (think the sim has helped alot) with no problems and no buddy box'n. did almost stall on landing today, gotta remember to use rudder instead of aelirons. think i learned my lesson on that tho. but i love my new planes , thanks for all the advice and help.
