Aerobatic pattern model - small to mid parkfly size
 

I've looked at various plans with a view to a precision aerobatic pattern model .... but nothing has really stood out and made me think - YES I MUST HAVE ! ...

Anyone with a recc'd plan link for such ?

Thoughts are :

Mid-wing
Long fuselage moment
Straight parellel chord wing ... or limited taper / sweep
Long / large fin
~1000mm span
Suitable 8x6 prop range motors
Capable of carrying 1800 - 2200 3S LiPo

The humble GWS Formosa is close to what you describe. Inexpensive, easy to build and can accept quite a range of power options. With a few simple modifications like dual ailerons in the wings, it is quite a commendable little sport/pattern flyer. My first one was mostly stock, with a PowerUp 400 Sport from HeadsUp RC spinning a 9x6 on 3S 1500MaH. The second one uses the PowerUp 400 Speed, a 6x4, and 3s 2200Mah. This one has dual ailerons, rudder and elev servos moved back to the tail, and larger than stock ailerons, plus a few other minor things. Flies fast and crisp, rolls can be nearly eye blink fast, with sharp start/stop control. The airframe kit cost $35 US.

I don't own any GWS stock, I just like simple inexpensive things that work. If you are interested I have more about the modifications and flying performance of the Formosa on my website, including recorded flight data.

Mid wing is tough. This is the only one I can think of in that size...

I was one click away from ordering the GWS Formosa II from Heads up and they ran out of stock. They were asking $50.00 for the kit with uber low shipping charges as usual. I too think cheap.

Would like to know how difficult it was to make room for a 2200. Also, still not 100% sure if my 2820/07 Emax would be overkill. Had it in a PZ-T-28 (RIP) and would like to re-use.

Fitting a 2200 batt into the Formosa is just a matter of enlarging the battery compartment as needed before gluing the fuselage halves together. I use a #11 and a chisel blade X-Acto to carve it out for a snuggish slide in fit. Piece of cake.

One just came to mind that I say years ago called the Pacifique.

Why the specs I posted ?

I flew Curare ... Magic many years ago and found the combo to be smooth and neutral whichever way up ... But they were IC 60 + pipe powered ... and much larger than what I propose here.

The Formosa was one I looked at ......... Badius as well ....

Awe no love for the Leader? The other planes are not really suited for precision pattern flying (more IMAC).

I too don't really love the looks of the Leader but if you can go bigger the new Splendor looks AWESOME!

If you go just a bit larger there are several great choices though. Oriris from 3DHS, Sequence from GP and several others. Is your size requirement strict?

One plan I've got - an internet download that's all over the shop - is the CADKaos. It was drawn by Jerry Yarrish, who is connected heavily with Model Airplane News magazine, from Joe Bridi's design. It's actually a 58" span, but I could downscale it to whatever you want and change it to jpg format, unless you do CAD and could work with the original.

It would meet most of your requirements bar the mid-wing and has a precision aerobatics pedigree. I'm building a large scale model based on the plan, to 50" span for an OS 25 motor and 4S/3300 battery right now.

The size req't is not strict but dictated by circumstance ... flight sites / transport etc.

I realise that Ultimates / Edge etc. are not precision aerobatic jobs like Curares etc. but they do look good !!

If it was not for difficulty in obtaining Glow Fuel and also costs - I'd love a Pattern 61 model from 1980's .... but Latvia is poorly served for Glow ... and a gasoline equivalent is too heavy.

These are smaller than you wanted but close.... Likely a 1300-1800 3s or maybe a small 2100/2200.

The Osiris and Vanquish are both great, but neither is available currently.

Go to the American A M A plans site. They used to have LOADS of Pattern / stunt planes. Some were contest winners.

Have not been to the plans section in years.

The A M A plans service has some Patterns from 1975 foward.

Give the site a try.

I went back to Outerzone ... and downloaded Prettners Curare and the mini Curare20 ............ will have a look at what can be done with them in foam ... with wood doublers / stiffeners etc.

The Pacifique I posted a few posts back has been gaining my interest as I look at it more. I think it's a good looking model.

I assume you are registered with Outerzone / Hip-Pocket ? The plans are in the Aerobatic section .. about 7th page I think. I just browsed through looking for a candidate and found them.

edit: I just tried it, and it took me about 3 seconds to scroll down and find the photo on the right. It is one of the few photos listed, so it makes it really easy to find.

I found them, no problem: http://plans.am.free.fr/, but I believe you'll need a-cad or an a-cad viewer. Viewers are easily downloadable. The other thing is French. I cut and paste into google translate.
