Power train setup needed...
K gang...I have recently obtained a Hobby Lobby Mini Telemaster ARF that needs a power train installed in it. I see what Hobby Lobby suggests but I would appreciate your input before I go ordering 'stuff'.
Particulars for those that do not know this kit:
45 inch wingspan
38 oz weight (I will increase this slightly when I add an extra servo for ailerons.
Not wanting to make a racer or anything special out of it. Just want it to fly low & slow like the trainer it is but with enough power to get me out of trouble when need be.
So...what outrunner, esc and battery (lipoThanks in advance.
Look at the kV and watt ratings of the recommended system.
Compare with the Tacon motors at nitroplanes.com. Find one within about 10% on both and it should work great and be much cheaper than the Hobby Lobby recommended motor.
The Detrum (Dynam) ESCs, also at nitroplanes.com are proving to be very good.
Earlier Dynam (said Dynam on the labels) ESCs couldn't withstand 50% of rated current at max rated voltage. The newer series ESCs I have are handling up to 120% of rated current at max rated voltage with no issues. (as good as what Castle Creations' ESCs are known for)
Sky Lipo brand batteries are very good and economical. I push 20C rated 4000 mah (80 amp rating) packs to over 100 amp burst (up to 45 seconds), 60 amp average demand with no issues.
The big problem here is the Sky Lipo batteries are sold out within a couple of days each time a shipment arrives.
Nothing wrong with the Hobby Lobby recommendations other than price.
Thanks gang for all this good info. Decision coming soon. Good weather has arrive in N. TX....:)
Good luck with the new plane. Telemaster has a great reputation.
If you have not read this book, take a look at the chapter on selecting power systems.
