Flyzone Hadron Maiden - review & video

3 Attachment(s)
Well I picked up a Flyzone Hadron a few weeks ago when I went to hobbytown for some CA glue :) I've been looking at this plane since July and just thought it was to expensive compared to the Stryker Q and Stryker C that I already own. However, with my new club discount I purchased it for $165.
I decided to immediately run it on 4S. I have plenty of 3S planes. I used some old batteries from my Sbach that I hadn't flown in 2 years (Skylipo 2200mah 40C-80C). I used a HobbyKing 6 channel receiver w/ satellite with my Dx8.
Plane went together in about 30 min. Screwing on the vertical stab, attaching 5x5 prop, putting in velcro / strap for battery, and soldering on a XT60 battery connector. I put some gorrilla tape clear on the leading edges and a strip of 3m packing tape down the middle of the underside.
I muddled my way through mixing a channel for the vector thrust so I could turn it off and on. I put the same rates and expo as for my Stryker f27Q. 1. 100% 30%, 2. 75% 30%, 3. 75% 40% Three position switch.
My friend Fish launched the plane for me and it took right off in the 20 - 28mph wind. I had to put in 3 clicks of up and that was all.
This plane is a rocket on 4S. I would say a little faster than the Stryker Q. Fish loaned me a new Nanotech 2200mah 4s 45C-90C battery and it was significantly faster my 3rd & 4th flights. We couldn't get the reading on the iphone Doppler to read consistently but got one reading at 120.7mph and quite a few over 110mph. The wind doesn't really effect this plane at all, good thing because I live in Wyoming :)
I made a video with my gopro Hero 2. It's recorded in HD so click on 1080 resolution for best quality. I'll have some speed run videos coming shortly. I do recommend this plane if you get it for a good price. I see Towerhobies has it for $175 with buyers club discount.

Wyoming that things screams and nice launch by your buddy. Get some good doppler readings and post the info in the link, and get a speed demon for your showcase should be easy to get a 120 mph award.

You HAVE to do the flat spins!

Also make sure you re-glue (just do it) the CF spar in the fuselage. Make sure you are seat-belting your battery for the flat spins too!

I LOVE mine....

Sorry for some reason WF is blocking my pic download....

Here is my review....

just got one ...bad elevon servo right out of the box !!! can't get a reply from Hobbico. may just throw in some HS 65hb's and get to flyin'

can't wait

Now the question is this. Since it is apparent that the Stryker has been discontinued could it be that this is the closest plane we shall see to the Stryker?

dahawk 05-12-2014 01:37 AM

Fish,
Another would be contender might be the Radjet but souped-up.

You might be right and at 65 dollars with shipping I pulled the trigger

Cool. It's been a few years since I had mine. Lots of fun. Huge thread over on RCG Some guys have run 6S . Yikes. It will do a death spiral on occasion. Don't ask me how I know. Darn good price.

Brick 05-12-2014 10:26 PM

always wanted a Stryker. then when i couldn't find one. it was between the Hadron & the Multiplex Funjet Ultra. like the look of the Hadron..no bad reviews

dahawk 05-12-2014 10:34 PM

Brick,

I'll be interested to learn how you like it. I need to fly my converted Katana 50mm Jpowers jet. Didn't do so well as an edf. Underpowered. She now has a Super Mega GH V2 on the back powered by a 4S lipo and 6 x 4 mas. Should scream.

stock hadron on a 2200 4s at 166mph
put a key chain camera in the nose
had a GPS logger in it also
sync the audio from a gopro i was wearing to video from the key chain camera on the Hadron

Yea no way "stock". Mine on 4s stock is just at about 100. Very capable battery too.

I call BS. :)

Need doppler up and downwind runs. GPS is NOT reliable for speed.

Nice flight! Neat Video as well. I agree with RCers with GPS Logger they are not accurate. They are a cool tool if you are looking for a reference.
On another note I was hoping to see your logged of 166.

I don't own this plane but it is pretty cool and it does move at a really good speed but I am sure stock setup your looking at 75-100mph realistically.

sorry did not know GPS was NOT reliable for speed
is there some software out there
that will take a sound file and give the speed
i can save a clip from the audio of the video
and use that to find the speed

here is the gpx file from logger

No worries I made the same mistake. The problem with GPS loggers are they are not reliable over 100 Mph due to the satellite logging in recalculating etc etc but the Altimeter is accurate. I finally realized it after I had a plane do 180mph  As far as software goes I understand that people can Doppler your sound from the video. Just don't know how. From you video you can hear some really good passes. Hopefully some one will chime in

100 for me also...I was thinking what the hey ?

I would like to solid mount the motor and try 5S. don't trust a servo holding that motor straight

Try here. http://hkdoppler.com

You need both upwind and downwind. The go fast guys want a level(ish) run too.

Speed takes power, lots and lots of power. :)

166 mph is hard to achieve with a prop. I have seen a 150mph Sokol and it is freaky scary fast. Saw a 180mph EDF that was just cooking.

One of these days I want to see the fastest RC models, dynamic slope gliders. Now those are fast.

I just picked one up. Putting it together was a cinch. Using the TTX650 so programming it as they recommend in the instructions was a breeze. Went to the park and tossed it and WOW! I have a new love in my life. It will even flat spin ( which is more of a pirouette) on a 3 cell. I let go of the elev/aileron stick and it almost hovers in place. And that's with a 3 cell! I LOVE THIS PLANE!!

bhcnomo 07-20-2014 01:15 PM

figure out what the rpm on the flat spins was on a 4s battery

pulled the video of the hadron flat spins in a video editor
found the flat spin part and cut all the rest out
the spin part was 4 sec long and it did 10 complaint spins
thats 2.5 spins per sec 2.5X60= 150 Revolutions per minute
