Top-Flite Gold Edition P-51 (65" WS) electric conversion
 
I'm currently building a TF Gold Edition Mustang and am wondering if anyone has either done a conversion on this airframe or has any good insights on a suitable power system for it.

Basic specs of this bird are:
Stock Number: TOPA0110
Wingspan:
65 in (1651 mm)
Wing Area: 734 inē (47.4 dmē)
Weight: 8-10 lb (3629-4540 g)
Fuselage Length: 56.6 in (1438 mm)
Engine Required: 2-stroke .61-.90 cu in or 4-stroke .91-1.20 cu in

As with most of my planes, "If it can't go straight up, it ain't got enough power" is my basic rule of thumb.

Also, I'd like to consider using a 4-blade prop if one will fit into the parameters already listed.

I have the H9 P-47 with a 66" wing that I used a Power 110 on 9S with a CC 110 amp esc and it balanced out with no additional weight to balance. If your Mustang has a forward hatch to give access to the forward tank area behind the firewall then you are in good shape to do the conversion-----your power paks must be up in the forward tank area to get a good CG without adding weight. A power 60 or equivalent on a 6S pak would be minimal power.

I had a P-51 model of similar size several years ago. Sold it to a club member. This model flew very well with a Hacker A50-12S motor, 15X10 APC-E two blade prop, and a 6S2P A123 battery pack. These electric motors can swing larger diameter props than the similar Horsepower glow engines. Make certain your model won't have issues with the prop hitting the ground on take off.

Power was around 1200 Watts, pulling 77 Amps out of the A123 pack. This is pretty close to what a 90- 4S engine can do. You might go for the Hacker A50-12L motor or similar mfg type motor for a bit more power. FYI, the Hacker A50-12L motor has more watts or horsepower than an OS glow 90 or 120 two stroker.

IMHO, you will need some 150 Watts per pound of airplane for good vertical climb out.
