What is the biggest prop I can get to fit a 1.2mm drive shaft?
 
I have a 5.25x2.75 prop on my Guillow conversion 109, powered by a cheap Flyzone SE5 powerplant and gearbox. I am seeking to boost performance. Is there anyone who makes a bigger prop?

I can fit a 3 blade but my experience is they don't make much difference.

You can make any prop fit the shaft.... Just wrap the shaft with teflon plumber's tape to fill the drilled hole in the prop hub.

A more important question is : How much prop can your power system handle?
The answer to that is... not significanlty more than what came on the Flyzone SE5.

If you need more power you probably need to look into a bigger motor and ESC.

3 blades, used correctly, will allow more prop blade area when you have limited ground clearance and thus let you use a bigger motor. The 2 main reasons for 3+ blades are ground clearance and prop tip speed. More tips = more parasitic drag and if you don't have a good reason for going to 3+ blades you need to avoid doing it.

The plane is set up as a belly lander. So three blades seem less than ideal. I do have a three blade I can try.

With respect, I doubt that plumbers' tape will give a vibration-free mounting on what amounts to a 1 mm wire.

I might try a rubber power prop, just for the heck of it, drilled out with a rotary file, aka 700 or 699 straight hand piece dental bur, twirled in my fingertips.

I have no way to measure it, but I believe the 5.25x2.75 prop increases thrust by 25-35 pct., when added to a Flyzone 3.7v Powerplant.

Just for the heck of it I tried the rubber power prop (never throw anything away!) that Guillow supplied in the kit. Wind was way high so I just got in a few short test flights done but my impression is that the prop works just fine and aside from being a ridiculous red color, it fit the Flyzone drive shaft perfectly, press fit, then a drop of ACC. The thrust nut at the rear of the drive shaft wants to come off... I think a drop of ACC should be helpful, carefully placed after degreasing

Thrust seems increased by as much as 30 pct. judging by the prop blast and feel of the model.

These motors are only $6.99. As long as the escapement doesn't burn up I can lie with the expense!

A little flat black took care of the UUUGHLY red prop.

I take it you are correcting my terminology. I guess it is a bit like being on a gun forum and hearing someone call an 1998 Krag-Jorgenson a "Craig rifle." I swear I have heard people refer to combination receiver/speed control/control surface servo unitized combinations as "escapements" as well as "bricks."

Useful historic information. Before my time and I played with single channel in the mid 60's, mostly with ship models. That third up-down dimension was and still is a model killer.

No one with any kind of a clue has ever called an ESC an escapement.

I am a beginner having flown RTF micro biplanes for a year... just built my first two stick and tissue conversions.

No problem with the terminology error. I make bigger boo boos than that all the time. ;)

lol...I even owned one back in 1957....cool deal back then. In my first RC, a Mambo, I installed it along with an Ace Commander single channel with ~doorbell button for control. You could interrupt the very stable attitude of the Mambo at any time....lol If memory serves me correctly, I do believe we referred to those as ESC's back then....:)

No big deal. I admit, I am learning. Right now I am still learning to fly. i was a very serious nut case obsessive plastic scale IPMS contest modeler for about 30 years. BUT I enjoy resurrecting childhood skills and moving from flying foam to flying stick and tissue (something my childhood ones never did!)... And I'm on a budget.

I don't mind being corrected.
