Computer Programs for Electric Power
 
There are a number of very good computer programs for calculating electric motor or electric model performance, based on the motor mfg, motor model, prop size, number of battery cells and so on.

There are a lot of other similar programs out there, both free, and not free.

So, could the wattflyer readers post the program(s) they use, and its corresponding web site? Perhaps, also include a list of the good things and bad things about the program you use. This would be very useful for all of us.

Kyleservice tech uses www.motocalc.com.

Good things:
It provides an overall suggestion on how well the model will fly based on wingspan, wing area, weight, and power system selected.

Bad things:
It's only as accurate as the motor specs provided by the mfg. Some of the motocalc motor specs listed are off by quite a bit.

This is not a computer program, but APC props has performance data for each of their propellers, listed by diameter/pitch, and power input, thrust, torque and so on for their props at different RPMs. Their charts even show how forward motion of their propellers on the model in flight affects the propeller loading. I've compared their tests, its pretty close.

  • But ... when just adding an extra cell(s):
    Motor/battery current wants to go up with voltage squared, not linearly, i.e. not in a straight line but in a steep curve, getting steeper and steeper. E.g. an n% increase in voltage will give a 2n% increase in current. Double voltage and current wants to quadruple (22).
  • And ... when changing your motor:
    Motor/battery current wants to go up with Kv cubed. E.g. an n% increase in Kv will give a 3n% increase in current. Double Kv and current wants to increase by factor 222 = 8!
  • The increase will not be exactly as above because voltage will sag a bit due to the higher current.
