WW I Markings

I have noticed that an SE-5, for example may have a large letter on the fuselage and upper wing. The letter may be "Z" or "B" or some other letter. Does anyone know what the letter means?????

I did as you suggested, xmech. I got a bind and then moved the Tx about 6 feet from the plane and unplugged the battery. Plugged the battery back in and still had a bind. I'm now back in business....
