I guess I didn't get the memo about Spektrum being bad, because I have at least 20 planes, ranging from tiny foamies to 120cc giant scale gassers flying on Spektrum. :)

You're out of luck, I think. The first version of DSM is very obsolete and not very good. You'll have a very hard time finding receivers for it. Even if you do, the first generation of DSM is said to...

I don't know if I would call it luck. :) Once I noticed that I still had some control, I carefully flew a couple of test approaches to get an idea of how she flew. I quickly discovered that she yawed...

Why wouldn't they still be made? It's just the US distributor that's going belly up.

Chief aircraft carries hacker and is really good to deal with.

My rule of thumb on LiPos is that the voltage per cell on WOT with a fresh battery shouldn't really drop below the nominal voltage (3.7V). If it does, you may want to investigate the battery a bit...

So that works out to about 9 mOhm per cell. Not as good as the 3 mOhm you saw on the charger, but since Ri is going to be higher at full throttle, it's still an OK rating.

(Geeky note: Internal...

I used the wrong starting voltage (3.6V instead of 3.3V), that's why I got a higher resistance.

Internal resistance, BTW, is a bit problematic since it's probably not constant across the current...

<flamebait>BTW... If you're putting out 2.8V @ 44A, your Ri is about 18mOhm. So not only are your A123s overweight and under-volted, they're over-ohmed too</flamebait> :)

Yup. People think a flu is just like a bad cold. Nothing could be more wrong. It can be really, really nasty.

Luckily I haven't caught the flu since I started getting the shot about 20 years ago.

I would personally recommend no or very little expo on a trainer. A trainer, when set up correctly, should have a very docile control response without expo.

OK. So here's a recommendation I think will work for most people as a starting point:

Sport/warbird: 30-40%
High speed: 40-50%
3D: 30-40% on low rates, 60-70% on high rates.

As for rates, on...

Also, when you experiment, these are the signs to look for: Too twitchy on straight and level and wide turns, you probably don't have enough expo. Mushy and sluggish feel and you have too much.

That's not entirely true. Some don't but I think most of them do. I know Joe Smith, for example, uses about 35% on the low rates and as much as 60% on some of the surfaces at high rates.

Again,...

Not enough cowbell for my taste. I'd like at least 1100-1200W on that plane. The thrust is enough to hover, but there's more to 3D than that and that motor wouldn't be powerful enough for the violent...

What batteries do you have? You have any 4s 4000mAh? In that case: Motrolfly 4315 714kv. I can play forwarder if you need. I have it in my 3DHS 58" Edge. Budget? Hmmm... Well, cheap it ain't. But the...

I think that Hacker is too heavy. You want a 280-290g motor with that size airframe. As a comparison, the Torque 4016T is 282g and the Motrolfly is 280g. Even though the 58" Extra is discontinued,...

First of all, the 650kv wind of that motor doesn't seem to be available from HK anymore. I can't find it anywhere on the website. In my opinion, 650kv is too much for 5S. You want at least a 15" prop...

Nigel, I have a 3DHS 58" Edge and I'm running a Motrolfly 4315 in it pulling about 1200-1300W. You don't want less than 1000W in a plane like that if you want to 3D. Maintaining a hover is one thing,...

One word: Motrolfly. They're superior motors, IMHO. Plus, you can get them custom wound to almost any Kv for a very reasonable cost.
