To me the housing takes precedent as that is really all that is visible initially.

DX6i would be a good radio for you at this point. And hard to beat at current prices. If you can swing it the new DX6 is even better but would have a steeper learning curve.

You can just discharge them fully and dispose in regular trash. I like to cut the leads off. Don't know how low your charger can take them. I use auto tail light bulbs to ensure fully discharged.
