You should do just fine with that rx, your gain will be controlled through your Gear channel.
Flew 450's all the time on 6ch rx's.

I think I would suggest foamies as well, like rcers said. They're great for learning 3d. Inexpensive, easy to repair, and you can use cheap electronics and batteries in them to keep the costs down...

Try checking or resoldering your connectors on your motor, may be a bad solder joint on the motor side.

You could also try different timings for your motor.
