I wouldn't worry about very minor dings. When you cover don't iron into the dings. When you shrink the covering, it will cover over the dings. Covering shrinks to the highest area, like a boat cover....

To avoid seeing the lights or wires, keep them away from the surface, and use a thin coating, a little transparent, but not extremely transparent, the light should glow through it.
