It definitely could be the motor. What battery are you using? (3-cell, 4-cell, etc.) Can you try it with a smaller prop - 11x5 or smaller - to see if that helps? Do you have a wattmeter?

I don't have any sort of backup in any of my planes. In five years of flying, that's never been a problem for me. (Knock wood.)

I mostly fly 'park flyers' worth $100 or so. I'd feel differently...
